Dominic Cummings tells MPs Johnson ‘unfit’ to be PM

  • In an epic session to MPs, the prime minister's former chief adviser Dominic Cummings turned on his former boss, accusing him of not being fit to run the country. He compared Boris Johnson to a broken shopping trolley, and claimed chaos in the government's Covid decision making resulted in tens of thousands of people dying "who didn't need to". (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Herd immunity, in which hundreds of thousands more would have died, had been the policy until he made them change it, he said.
Mr Cummings painted a picture of an imploding government, lacking data and following bad scientific advice. He went on to accuse the health secretary of lying repeatedly about PPE, medical treatment and the supposed shield around care homes.

On contracts he seemed to take the view that governments should be able to ignore the rules when there is an emergency. The rules are there to ensure good value and protect against corruption. There is usually a procedure for fast track contracts in emergency, and of the £37bn contracts that the government handed to friends and supporters, without competitive tendering, the only legal requirement on them was to publish the contracts afterwards for the public to see, but the government has not done that. Also there's usually a list kept of approved contractors who are already checked according to various criteria before going on the list. They should have picked contractors from the approved list if they were not going to have competitive tendering, so I disagree with Cummings' attitude there that in an emergency you just throw the rules out of the window. Part of the problem is the huge cuts the government made to civil servants since 2010. There's no spare capacity now. The Department of Health and Social Care is only about 2000 strong in terms of permanent staff (civil servants) and with Covid and Brexit on top of the day job in the same year they would be overloaded. It's a false economy anyway because the government now deals with demands it can't manage by bringing in expensive consultants on separate contracts.

@@Must_not_say_that But there is one thing that they are doing right and it is the roll out of the vaccine. The best thing bringing forward the 2nd vaccine from 12 weeks to now 8 weeks for the top 9 vulnerable groups. Also fast roll out of the vaccine down the age groups especially for India variant hot spots. There could be other variants in future as there was already the Kent variant. Also, they are pushing track and trace in hospitality. Also testing is being given a bigger platform. Should stop all travel to and flights and ships from India including commercial. Having watched the full 7 hours, Dominic accepts responsibility and has apologised. However, we should be thanking him and other brave individuals in the civil service who had the courage to walk into the PM's office and say the plan isn't working. The plan of "herd immunity" was backed by scientific consensus in SAGE and backed by the Prime Minister up until shortly before the first lockdown. To go against scientific consensus is obviously not an easy thing to do, given the climate of "believe the science" and anyone who questions it is relegated to being of no relevance. Ultimately the scientific modelling and the code should have been made public so outside experts could analyse the merits of Herd Immunity.

Cummings ....... A great ally, a very bad enemy. Cummings broke the lockdown rules, and Johnson had to deal with it publically, whilst removing egg from his face, directly as a result of Cummings' actions. Probably heavily disciplined in number10 for leaving the Tories so exposed and open to allegations of one rule for the people, another for Parliament. Perhaps had Cummings stuck to the original plan (which may well have been agreed with Johnson beforehand in his unique circumstances) and not gone out on his family trip to Barnard Castle for what he used the most stupid and pathetic reasons, with even more dangerous consequences to other drivers - to test his eyesight for driving back to London - he might well have got away with it. Inste4ad, he was caught, it was made public, and Johnson HAD to be seen to punish him and rightly so. Cummings has since had a lot of time to construct a story leaving him unblemished, and Johnson is now on the receiving end of what many other Number 10 workers literally feared and hated Cummings for. He is a bad apple and better off out of the whole operation.
One final thing I do have to agree with Cummings over though is Matt Hancock. He comes across as the most gormless of beings and not worthy of holding a position of such responsibility. I have never had any confidence in what he says is true, and agree with Cummings on this occasion that Hancock should have been sacked long ago. We shall see how Johnson reacts to the allegations at his next Cabinet reshuffle.
