How amazing! I remember these pencils from my childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. One of my classmates had a box, and she would let me borrow them. I ALWAYS wanted a set, and I have never forgotten them. I have looked for the striped pencils all my life, for some reason I always remembered them as Caran D'Ache pencils, maybe she had another set of pencisl as well.
I am 71 now, and I have FINALLY found these beautiful striped Staedtler Luna pencils. So so grateful to you. I am an artist and a colourist, and my vast collection of colour pencils was always missing the striped pencil set. I will purchase a set right away. Thank you!

These are one of the best watercolours since my childhood(1990) and surprisingly no one has talked about the real good reviews.so finally thank you.

This pencils is very common in Malaysia and can be found in all bookstores. I usually use this together with the Staedtler Luna 136 pencils which is a permanent colour pencils. To me the number is something like a model number. There are Luna 136 and Luna 143C50P as well. I love these colour as it is not too pricey like Prismacolor or Derwent.

I agree with you totally Zoh Yee they are much cheaper than Prismacolor and Derwent and for the money you pay, the pencils are really nice. I’ve not tested or reviewed the ordinary Staedtler Luna pencils but I will check them out eventually

When I was young, I got my first set of Luna watercolour as my birthday gift from my aunt. That time I did not use the watercolour function because I simply didn’t know. 😅 now I am in search of a video showing the effect of adding water and hope to get these for my children. From HONG KONG , living in MALAYSIA. Easy to get this brand colour pencils in both city/country.

In South Africa it is very common to find these in childrens school bags. I still have some from my school days, they are still just as good 20 years later.

This and the Faber Castell Classic are the go-to pencils for kids in Indonesia (and probably in other SEA countries as well).
Had a set back in elementary school and loved them a lot. Back in the 90s they were only sold in sets but recently I see them being sold open stock too.
    Nice pencils. Very affordable too.

Excellent video!!!! I watched two or three other videos on TH-cam in Spanish and they did amazing artworks. Yours is overwhelming!!! I hope I can get this very same set. Thank you Harry for this review.

These were my first watercolor pencils, I follow that same artist. I made a few paintings with these. I like them a lot. Just wish they had color names on them 😊

I'm surprised that you don't have more views on your videos, Harry. You really give amazing insights on pencils and you definitely make reviews that are worth watching.

For cheap watercolor pencils, I'm surprised how well they blend out. I have some known brands that still leave a tiny bit of unblended pencil underneath.

Great review Harry. Indeed these are best pencils to practice watercoloreffect using color pencils. I have used them for detailing in some watercolor artworks in sketchbook. In India you can easily buy it from student stationary stores and amazon.

    Hello Harry,
Thank you for this new review, what a wonderful drawing!
I just ordered them on alliexpress for 20 euros, I hope they will be originals, we'll see.
On Amazon France, they cost 50 euros (59 dollars), they are clearly overpriced.
I wish you and your family a good weekend.
    Greetings from Belgium

Hi Séverine when I was looking for prices and links Amazon was really expensive, if you look at the written review I have the prices over there and because I know some prefer to buy from places they know better I added Amazon US prices and the difference in their prices and AliExpress is huge.
Actually I forgot to mention in the review now that we are having chat, that if the pencils were the price that they are being sold on Amazon, I would say they are worth that price point, there are other pencils for that price point. But the prices I have listed on AliExpress make these pencils such an attractive buy.
I am sure you are going to really love them and also I have every faith you will get the originals. I got my set from AliExpress and the links I’ve provided are from the exact same seller I got mine from.

      @@TheArtGearGuide HI Harry,
Thank you for your answer, I understand that it is better to leave the choice of purchasing platform to people, Amazon's speed of delivery also makes it a great choice.
Aliexpress is more for people who can wait a month or two to receive their packages.
I have full confidence in your judgment about these pencils, I have never been disappointed with my purchases.
Thank you again for all the work you do to guide us towards the right choice.
Have a good week to you and your family.
      Séverine

Hi! You can get these colour pencils open stock, but only at certain shops - at least, here, in Malaysia. I get mine at Popular Book (the store, not available online). When I started primary school, these pencils were on our books & stationery list we need to get each year when school started. I still use them.

Thank you for the review Harry, very interesting. If these are aimed at children then that brush that is included is enough to put a child of art for life.

Its one of the most popular coloured pencil here in Malaysia along side Faber castell. It will make you feel proud if you have the 48 pcs set when you are a kid in school. It even sold open stock here!

I can't remember ever having seen them, and I've been a sort of Staedtler follower for 20 years or so. Good review though. I mainly stopped by to see how your daughter is doing. atvb to you and yours.

Hi, I am with you, even on the Staedtler website they don’t mention these pencils which makes me think that they are more for the Middle East or Southern European market. But I would really like to see more of them being sold in the UK and US. I know they can occasionally pop up on EBay and Amazon but you have to be constantly watching these platforms to buy them at least the UK versions of the platform. Thank you for your lovely comment

In India every student of art and fashion design use these pencils. These are student grade pencils in India but not less than many professional pencils. They get activated when water is applied. But many times I have used them as color pencils also . I have been using these and many steadler products for past 25 years. They are superb learning pencils. And can even be used as professional ones.

I love them and before doing this review I had seen other artists in India using them and could never find them in the U.K. to review. But now they are quite common here and I love mine. I was really quite pleased with the demonstration art I did with them, they really did a good job.

I purchased these pencils because I had tried a set of 12 watercolour pencils by Staedtler and loved how they performed dry. The colours of this set are the same as the other cheap Staedtler watercolour pencils but with 12 additional colours. The Karat sets have a wider range of colours but they're more expensive, that's why I chose the Lunas. I really like the vibrancy of these pencils and how they blend dry, I've used them on my colouring books =D Have you tried them dry?

That blue swatch beside the light gray is beautiful, so is the purple swatch that is in front of the medium gray.

Hi, I have just bought the Staedtler Karats and it came with a leaflet. From the look of it, these are the same corresponding numbers that I see on there, except the Karat range also includes the colour names. I guess they have a similar colour code system to Faber Castell.
I also have the Staedtlet Design Journey watercolour pencils, and even though those didnt come with a leaflet, my impression is that the two ranges are identical. Now I don't know about Luna, as they are not available where I live, but my assumption is they are probably the equivalents of Staedtlers kids range here in Europe, which is the Staedtler Noris line.

The Lyra Super Ferby is a kids' pencil that absolutely blows me away with the quality. It's not a Polychromos or anything, but it's a nice thick pencil.

My understanding is that the karat premium pencils are actually their professional, and most expensive. Maybe I’m wrong but that is what I have seen.

Was it Paint Academy that you saw the videos? I just started watching that person's videos and he or she uses these pencils. I was curious about them because they look so different. Was able to find the Amazon listing and found the name... Decided to look up some reviews for it

Imagine. If your a child learning colors thru watercoloring...this set could be confusing....for the stickers dots would be hard to match...

  • @mjpete27

This was a hard video to watch. I am not sure about the why of this product? I think the stickers are just so people can keep track of which pencil they’re using because they are so hard to tell apart. I actually think there are better choices than these that are much easier to get. I do appreciate the effort that went into this review and your drawing was awfully nice. I did watch the speed paint and I prefer more voiceover telling me what you are doing or why you are working this way as opposed to the music which honestly is just boring. Thank you for sharing your opinions on the pencils.

I never quite got the point of trying to make watercolor pencils work like paint pans. It feels like you're working against the strength of the medium trying to make it work like another.

NZ have these sets, that's so weird! Usually we don't get anything good here, not for a reasonable price anyway. The prices for art supplies in New Zealand are outrageous!
I'm gonna go get some now! I have been looking for a good set of watercolor pencils (that's how I found your channel, been watching tons of reviews).
