The last hug is exactly why I love Sam and Dean. They were hurt by Mary's deal with Azazel. When she came back, they just wanted to be close to her, but she abandoned them. Of course, leaving them would bring up feelings about her deal. Sam is quicker to forgive and he was like, "I don't care about the past. I just want to have my mom back." It took Dean longer to get to where Sam is in the forgiveness process, but it's great that he eventually did and this moment shows it.

Ya know I was so excited when they brought on Mary and they showed that this was a complicated character and not just the idealistic mother that Dean thought she was and I was like "Yasss, this is so cool", but then they ruined her completely by making her betray her sons, abandon them repeatedly, risk their and Cas's lives, and then they expected us to root for her like lmao no. They could've handled her character so much better imo but her relationship with her sons is very precious and tear inducing ngl. The only reason I still tolerate Mary and don't straight up hate her despite the bad writing is because of Samantha's beautiful portrayal of her. There's something about the way she plays Mary thats so endearing, that even when she's doing fucked up shit and you feel like screaming at her, you still feel connected to her and feel sorry for her.

I think people who were actually abandoned by their mothers might have a compelling reason. Yes, it’s fiction, but we all know the storylines and relationships bring out a ton of feels- it’s the main reason most people watch the show. I myself was SO HAPPY when they brought Mary back to life but I was ticked off when she left the boys so soon after.
