Link Knight you are correct in stating the northstar (deathstar as my mechanic refers to them) problems are well known. They became known to me when I bought this rolling dumpster fire yrs ago. Gm knew these turds grenaded at around 100 k for over 12 yrs and just shrugged it off. I’m 76 yrs old and MY father owned Gm back to the 1940’s and I also . Never again . Just hope I live long enough to see them go bankrupt for good. Now Lexus only......

Not to mention when it's your wife's car, the repairs will be good for brownie points. 😉 In saying this as someone who's wife has had two North Stars. Thankfully I finally got her to see the light in Mercedes after driving my AMG. I'm so glad not to own a front wheel drive anymore.
My grandparents bought two of these on their 50th wedding anniversary. Drove them daily for twenty years and one had 216k and the other 173k. They were meticulously maintained by a well respected independent shop. Still ran and drove perfectly when they were sold after they gave up driving. Both were quite reliable.
I liked the red one better, too!!! Better exhaust note, better interior color, instruments work........what's not to like??? Wizard, cherish that fine lady; her voice is soothing, great hands, and very cute, to boot!!! My days of owning a Northstar are done, leave it to a professional like car wizard to get my joys out of a engine like that.. fantastic when it ran, a nightmare when it didn’t (1994 Cadillac STS) now I’ve moved onto 1999 4.6 Crown Victoria which has been a great car, noticed the intake manifold was original (which is amazing considering it was never replaced leaving me with the original all plastic design, in which I swapped out for the aluminum bolt in) never give up on these American mades, when watched over properly and understanding the cost limits and realities they can make a car man or woman very happy with years of service. The Northstar V8 can also be just as good as the 4.6L in your Crown Victoria. The sister engine would be the InTech 32 Valve 4.6L V8 from the Lincoln Continental which are much more advanced and powerful over the 4.6L SOHC engines. Once you understand these engines, both the Intech and the Northstar, they are not that bad and run excellent.
Long time viewer from Australia here, also ex automotive dealership parts department worker. I still like cars, and it's interesting watching them get repaired, bought, and sold. I especially admire your honesty, which can be rare in the automotive industry.
Hi Mrs Wizard!! Nice to meet you! Love the Cadillac Allante also. I know the Northstar was not the best engine, but they sure sounded good. I had a 99 Deville and nothing ever sounds so good as a Northstar under throttle! Good luck and look forward to seeing more on the Allante!

I’m not going to lie I work at a Chevy dealer and we had a 89 come in with some running issues (came to a bad temp sensor) but I loved the look of this car. Seeing it in person that dash board light up. Very cool car.
Nice to finally be able to put a face with the voice behind the camera, Mrs. Car Wizard! The Allante looks WAY better with the factory wheels, nicely done. It sounds really good too. Hope she's able to enjoy the convertible when spring/summer rolls around. You may have recommended people not by pre-2005 Northstars (actually 2004 SRX came with the new Northstar for it's RWD/AWD setup I think) because most people can't do the head bolt repair themselves like you can. Paying someone to do it isn't economically feasible given the value of the car(s) but if one can do their own work, it opens up many more options for older cars. This would not include me mind you LOL. Also I think it's important to remind folks that the Northstars produced for 2005 & later models of the Cadillac SRX, STS, STS-V, XLR & XLR-V do NOT have the same problems with head gaskets/head bolts. I've owned an '05 STS and still own an '08 STS-V and the Northstars in them are terrific.
Now I'm oddly interested in the Mr and Mrs carwizard love story.. how did they meet, who made the first move, how long have Mr and Mrs carwizard been in love. I wish you were in my town. I’ve struggled to find an honest guy to have repair any of my vehicles. The only positive is that it’s helped me figure out how to do a lot of my own work. But man you are a wizard and a genius.
Brings back memories.. I had one that I bought second hand from the son of a dealership owner... It was (is) a great car... of course back in the day it had a 10 year bumper to bumper warranty and it needed it. I had mine for a couple of years... that 3 year old car needed a new fuel pump, fuel sender, weather stripping, power door lock motors, new power brake system.. and they fixed the power antenna.. twice... I remember JR buying his Allante on Dallas. He had always driven Mercedes S-Classes prior to buying it but he wanted to buy American! I remember the Cadillac dealership had chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, I wonder if the upscale dealerships in large cities like Dallas were really like that or if it was just "TV magic".

I went there on the advice of my dad and he was surprised that they they treated me like I was a deadbeat. I took the Sewell emblem off the car as soon as the check cleared.

Tyler did not seem to love the Allante, but i had a brand new 1 for a demo in 88' or 89' and it was an eye turner and i enjoyed driving it. I still think it's a great looking car. I'm from Europe and I don't have a clue about Northstars, but how can you not recommend the Allante? Did you see how freakin awesome that car looks? No head gasket is gonna scare me, no sir. Good looking cars often require sweat and curses.
Soulburn89 You have no idea what a Northstar will do to you! Head gaskets are the least of it. In addition, Allantes were plagued with electrical problems! The dealership mechanics just HATED them!
6:20 - There is at least one company that rebuilds the GM-Magnaride suspension. Look it up. Its possible to continue using that setup. You have to send them off though.

The Northstars might be a swing-and-a-miss compared to the Intecs, but I do recall cruising in my cousins new '93 with the top down. He's put his foot in it, there'd be a quiet "click" as the trans downshifted and that thing would take off like a mad bastard. Enjoy!

pretty disappointed I got rid of my '95 Park ave (with the 3800 II) - the transmission went bad, but the engine itself was great. Had 161k when I got rid of it. Probably would have kept going had I fixed it.

Nice! I just bought another 1993 Allante, same color Pearl red with a black leather interior. This wasn't something that I had planned as my father found it. I just brought it home a few days ago and is parked next to my other euro red 93 Allante. I'm glad to see that you have one yourself and your wife is going to enjoy it. I remember when growing up that I always wanted one of these cars and didn't care what year or what color. I bought my first Allante about 4 years ago and I've been driving it as a daily driver with hardly any issues. I look forward to seeing more Cadillac vids in the future. i just don't get how 21,000 shells came here by air? even if you could fit 20 in each 747 that's an insane waste of money. those jets had 4 engines and were in no way good on gas. and they took 3 crew to fly them minimum. and did the 747's fly back to Italy empty? guess that was all seen in the price if the car.

I know for a fact having done stuff for ford Australia that you can fit HUGE numbers of doors in a small space but I'm not so sure about entire body frames. 20 would've been the limit. Why they didn't come by sea is beyond me. Even engines will aluminum head and block could be realisticly air freighted but bodys are damn heavy.
Glad to see U enjoying the Allante ,,,,I have one too a 90 WHITE PEARL/BLK its one of my fav cars to drive,, since i have about 30 from 1912 to current ,,,,I FIXED these new for Cad since i have collision/vintage shop that iv'e worked in with my dad most of my life,,And always wanted one ,,which i got banged up on left front from a tire blowout ,,not hard to fix ,,a bumper ,,some lites,,fender repairs,,But recently getting water/steam coming off back of motor,,am thinking its from metal crossover coolant tube that has rusted at back of motor next to firewall ,,,,its a little cramped back there with a bunch of lines n hoses i am reluctant to touch or mes with unless i have to ,,,,due to leaks in vac or? and electrical problems moving older wiring etc,, Have U ever encountered this on Allante or Eld/Seville that have same eng platform,,,, If so ,,Please LetMe Know,AS i Want to continue to enjoy and drive this unique Cady Have driven mine numerous times down PA TPK @ 100 or more,,Looking forward to hear what U think ? ,,Thanx for U R informative Videos,,,,,,, Frank Heiss/Franklin Auto / Westville NJ

I wish you were in my town. I’ve struggled to find an honest guy to have repair any of my vehicles. The only positive is that it’s helped me figure out how to do a lot of my own work. But man you are a wizard and a genius.

Brings back memories.. I had one that I bought second hand from the son of a dealership owner... It was (is) a great car... of course back in the day it had a 10 year bumper to bumper warranty and it needed it. I had mine for a couple of years... that 3 year old car needed a new fuel pump, fuel sender, weather stripping, power door lock motors, new power brake system.. and they fixed the power antenna.. twice... Good luck Mr Wizard...
I remember JR buying his Allante on Dallas. He had always driven Mercedes S-Classes prior to buying it but he wanted to buy American! I remember the Cadillac dealership had chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, I wonder if the upscale dealerships in large cities like Dallas were really like that or if it was just "TV magic".
If they went to Sewell that dealer is still there, but chandlers are gone.
@@Justkevin377 ~ Sewell was a great dealership back in the day. Too bad they started to suck when I bought my car from them 8 years ago. I went there on the advice of my dad and he was surprised that they they treated me like I was a deadbeat. I took the Sewell emblem off the car as soon as the check cleared.

Tyler did not seem to love the Allante, but i had a brand new 1 for a demo in 88' or 89' and it was an eye turner and i enjoyed driving it. I still think it's a great looking car. Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Wizard!! I am glad you put stock wheels back on, i did not care for the rims that were on it.

I'm from Europe and I don't have a clue about Northstars, but how can you not recommend the Allante? Did you see how freakin awesome that car looks? No head gasket is gonna scare me, no sir. Good looking cars often require sweat and curses.

Soulburn89 You have no idea what a Northstar will do to you! Head gaskets are the least of it. In addition,
Allantes were plagued with electrical problems! The dealership mechanics just HATED them!
He can't recommend it because it's about as reliable as a BMW..... not that a European would understand.

The only year that the Allante came with the Northstar is 1993 the rest are good they had the 4.1s and 4.5 v8’s in them and they are great engines

6:20 - There is at least one company that rebuilds the GM-Magnaride suspension. Look it up. Its possible to continue using that setup. You have to send them off though.

The Northstars might be a swing-and-a-miss compared to the Intecs, but I do recall cruising in my cousins new '93 with the top down. He's put his foot in it, there'd be a quiet "click" as the trans downshifted and that thing would take off like a mad bastard. Enjoy!

The 3800s are truly great engines
pretty disappointed I got rid of my '95 Park ave (with the 3800 II) - the transmission went bad, but the engine itself was great. Had 161k when I got rid of it. Probably would have kept going had I fixed it.

Nice! I just bought another 1993 Allante, same color Pearl red with a black leather interior. This wasn't something that I had planned as my father found it. I just brought it home a few days ago and is parked next to my other euro red 93 Allante. I'm glad to see that you have one yourself and your wife is going to enjoy it. I remember when growing up that I always wanted one of these cars and didn't care what year or what color. I bought my first Allante about 4 years ago and I've been driving it as a daily driver with hardly any issues. I look forward to seeing more Cadillac vids in the future. i just don't get how 21,000 shells came here by air? even if you could fit 20 in each 747 that's an insane waste of money. those jets had 4 engines and were in no way good on gas. and they took 3 crew to fly them minimum. and did the 747's fly back to Italy empty? guess that was all seen in the price if the car.

@@smwsmwsmw I highly doubt that. I know for a fact having done stuff for ford Australia that you can fit HUGE numbers of doors in a small space but I'm not so sure about entire body frames. 20 would've been the limit. Why they didn't come by sea is beyond me. Even engines will aluminum head and block could be realisticly air freighted but bodys are damn heavy.
It certainly sounds like an absolute stupid and ineffective way to produce cars.
Because...Allante! GM wanted to stick it to the Europeans, especially the Germans. If they took a loss on each car, they didnt seem to mind.

Glad to see U enjoying the Allante ,,,,I have one too a 90 WHITE PEARL/BLK its one of my fav cars to drive,, since i have about 30 from 1912 to current ,,,,I FIXED these new for Cad since i have collision/vintage shop that iv'e worked in with my dad most of my life,,And always wanted one ,,which i got banged up on left front from a tire blowout ,,not hard to fix ,,a bumper ,,some lites,,fender repairs,,But recently getting water/steam coming off back of motor,,am thinking its from metal crossover coolant tube that has rusted at back of motor next to firewall ,,,,its a little cramped back there with a bunch of lines n hoses i am reluctant to touch or mes with unless i have to ,,,,due to leaks in vac or? and electrical problems moving older wiring etc,, Have U ever encountered this on Allante or Eld/Seville that have same eng platform,,,, If so ,,Please LetMe Know,AS i Want to continue to enjoy and drive this unique Cady Have driven mine numerous times down PA TPK @ 100 or more,,Looking forward to hear what U think ? ,,Thanx for U R informative Videos,,,,,,, Frank Heiss/Franklin Auto / Westville NJ
