Ive never really paid much mind to how I attach sinkers Ive always had good luck just clamping or tying them on but lately it seems like Im getting hits but they just pick the bait up and drop it and I think it's because of the tension on the line from the weights so here I am. Thinking the thermocline is hitting my area so the fish are getting finicky. And I pretty much already knew how to carolina rig but I figured Id watch a video just to cement it. Good info and presentation I appreciate it. This is a good channel to refer people to if they dont know a lot.

I have learned and used many rigs over the years, but the Carolina rig has always served me well in many applications. After leaving slide baiting and surf fishing in Hawaii, where I was stationed, it has always been the number one rig I use and teach others to use.

for catfish I use a 65 lb braided line and a 30 lb fluorocarbon leader line and I keep my leader lines around 3 feet when using braided line I know a lot of people will say if your using braided line the leader line should be double the length of your rod but I have been fishing for 25 years and I have never used a leader line longer than 3 feet and I have caught plenty of fish.

Need a video on setting baitcaster adjustment on different types of reels

If your starting out just button up the hatches on the brakes and use a sinker at least 1/2 or 3/4oz...practice and lighten up on them lil by little as you get used to it.What you need is to train the muscle memory in your thumb to act as your brake.Whether it be lightly dragging on the line on the spool or the small exposed metal portion of the spool to just bumping either one.Gotta have that muscle memory..
It's not really a reel to reel thing,it's weight that makes all the difference.Different weights will require less or more braking.Amount of line also contributes to this in both the total amount inertia that has to be overcome when starting a cast and getting that spool to start turning to how much is left on a spool after cutting BL's out or just normal care over time.
I been using and prefer casters/conventional for about 40 yrs,I don't even use a brake (my reels are all non-magnetic brake and have lil plastic nipples to slow it,I've taken them all off to lighten the inertia) other than the spool tensioner just so if I happen to let my thumb off the spool for whatever reason it doesn't go crashing,to the ground, boat deck, etc. and backlash.
When I use my 151 and 201 Shimanos Crappie/Gill fishing and I swap from say a 1/32 to a 1/16 or vs. I'll sometimes forget and will get a slight backlash because I didn't bump it with my thumb soon enough. That's about the only time I get a BL anymore.....well unless I catch a limb, brush, etc. when I draw back to cast...then those can be a lil bigger BL's..lol but they're not hard to get out once you learn the trick.
Ohh and don't go buying the top price line if just starting out....you will just be wasting $$$ because you will be cutting BL's out...lol. Get the cheapest you can...
Another tip to help to keep a BL at bay is when casting, twist your wrist in the cast right before you take your thumb off the spool so the axle of the spool is on it's side....ground to sky.Or if you practice you can start and finish your cast that way.Doesn't eliminate it but it helps.

I have quit using egg sinkers altogether, they abrade the line, especially braid.
I use sinker slides, without the metal clasp, and use lighter #test line than my main line to tie a no roll bank sinker, coin sinkers, reg bank sinker, etc. on to it with a cow hitch knot.If it gets snagged whether there's a fish on or not I can break that sinker off and still get my rig or rig and fish in.
Hooks, all I use is 5/0.They will catch bullheads to Flatties and Blues but I cut my baits a lil bigger to keep the bullheads from being able to swallow them,I catch 99& less of them that way.Now and a gain one of those dang lil things will sit there and chomp on it till it can and when I go to reel in or they may try to take off there those dang things are.
All I use anymore is the Santee rig,I don't have any baits laying on the bottom anymore.I get snagged at least 99% less with the hook.Saves the point from dinging rocks etc and becoming dull prematurely.
What I always find funny is these people wanting to use 9-10-12+ foot rods, mostly bank fishing.....LOL
Their excuse is I need to get out there....LOL and they may only still get out there 100 yds...and you don't need to get out there all the time.Holes and eddys were the fish are holding aren't always out there.
If they just learn to properly cast a rod they can get out there.A 7'6" with 2oz and around 2-3oz of cut bait is able to cast 100-120yds,I know I do it....by using the Brighton cast. There is other casting techniques to get further but most times I don't have the room to use them so I never really practiced them, sometimes I'll use a hybrid of the pendulum cast that's like the Brighton cast but it doesn't rest on the ground.
All a longer rod does is allows the fish to put more leverage on the person running the rod,not the other way around..
And unless you're using a heaver rod you just may end up snapping it in a cast if you're using like 4-6-8oz weights and bait..pier and surf fishers know them as heaver or 8-n- bait rods.

Very useful information thank you for taking the time to explain this. I do have one important question though, what type of line, brand name, color, etc...do you commonly use or would recommend using?

30lb main line with 18 to 24 inch 40lb leader 18 to 20inchs long with cigar float and 6 to 8/0 hook, works for me. Just enough to keep bait out of the mud

What size of catfish would you say is good eating size and how big would be too big.I don't want to take something that took years to get that big

    • @williammason9789

My opinion: eater size is 2 to 6 lb. Too big would be anything bigger than 8 to 10 lb.

I use100 lb braid for my leader line. I find it’s easier to tie on the circle hook with braid compared to mono.
