New Holland 489 Haybine Repair

  • While getting ready to cut hay, the 489 haybine that had just been working suddenly was plugging every few feet. What Alan thought was just a simple fix ended up being much worse. The wobble box/gearbox had locked up. Alan made a call to the nearest dealership only to find out that a remanufactured box was $4,500! That was way above our budget and more than it would cost to buy a different machine. Luckily, Alan found a parts haybine on Craigslist for only $500 with a working gearbox. After making the swap from the parts machine to ours and a few other parts, the haybine was ready to test out. Did our repair work? Watch to find out!

This is why farmers have parts equipment stashed around. So many people now can't understand that and see it as just junk. The old stuff can be worked on with a few simple tools. I miss those days. Please stay safe, and God bless.

Had a new 489 in 1976,ran that machine till 1990 and sold it to friend and he ran it for many more years. They were great machines, made versions of it for many years!! Had year’s were we cut well over a 1000 acres. Thanks for the videos so much.

We've had this one since new, in 1988, and this is the biggest issue we've had, so that's not bad at all. Thanks for watching!

Nice going Alan you just showed the world with a little common sense and elbow grease you can save $4000. Plus now you have something you can pull parts from to save even more in the future.

Hi Trinity Dairy, thank you for continuing to share your day to day events with all of us!
I had a content idea for you; we all know what free advice is worth…
If you’re looking for an idea, maybe one of the kids (with help from the family) could restore the old Farmall for a 4-H project. Great learning experience! That should be an economical tractor to rebuild/restore, and I bet many viewers would support it financially. It could also be parts of many episodes. If you do go forward with this, as a 4-H judge I suggest documenting time, dollars, and taking lots of pictures to share the process with people at the county and possibly state fair. Just an idea and love the channel! God Bless!

We use a John Deere 1209 on its second Pitman gear. Dad quick bought 2 more just for the very purpose you describe. I can't count all the times we done something like that. The advantage of living in the sticks is one can hide the parts yard in it someplace.

Glad you were able to find the parts machine. Sometimes salvage parts will keep a machine going at a fraction of the price. Popular models with a good reputation are easier to find parts for. Sounded like you've got it running like a champ!!!

I'm glad you were able to find that parts machine to keep your hay bine going without spending a fortune. I admire your resourcefulness in doing so. I couldn't help being amused by the excessive amount of grunting that went on when you were struggling to get that replacement wobble box in place under the machine. You didn't look too comfortable. Be glad you didn't have to do that down here in Southern Mississippi right now. The heat and humidity would make you more than grunt, you'd fall out. At least we don't have drought. Praying for you midwesterners to get the rain you need and your cows to get the hay they'll need this winter.

We cut hay with two 489 haybines for many years,,,,, they are awesome.. but the price of the new wobble box convinced us to get a diskbine.. my opinion is that if you have a 489 that works..use it up…but once yo use any diskbine you won’t want to use a sickle mower ever again

Keep that wobble box, rebuild it,and put on a shelf somewhere. It's a simple design and parts are cheap. New Holland generally uses pretty standard bearings and seals so pay attention to the numbers. Two wobble boxes and that mower will last the the rest of your life, probably a good portion of Justin's too.
    Best regards from Indiana.
