Help us identify the mysterious bird call at night?

I got this recording of a very clear bird calling at 2am. It is in the Appalachian Mountains around our home in Virginia. I don't ever recall hearing this bird before and I can't find it on a search.

It's an Eastern Whip-poor-will. Growing up in the 60s I heard them every evening in rural Connecticut. They are much rarer now and it's been years since I've heard one.
