This helps so much ❤️ I struggled through choir in college, and I never had someone to explain how to release my tension this way.

Really good video. Reducing Jaw tension one of the most overlooked / under taught parts of singing

Hi Dipak. thanks for your comment. Often when a student wants to change the sound of the voice I will start with tongue and jaw tension and they are amazed at the difference it makes to their voice! :) Which exercise did you find the most helpful?

@@VocalCoachDylan Hi Dylan :) I have a silly question. How to relieve stress related to singing in general? How to take singing less seriously? Seriously! It feels like no singing technique ever works for me and I know it's because I just can't relax. 😅 I don't even sing on stage. I sing at home, all alone, and still have this problem. I'd love it if you could offer some insight.
Hope you have a great day too!

      Hi Iva,
That is a great question and well done for being aware of it. This is really common. And is the main reason that I have a job as a vocal coach. My job is to lead students away from over controlling everything to the extreme (getting their head out of the way). In other words controlling their voice so much that nothing works! Learning to sing is not the same as working hard at it like learning anything else. It’s about getting out of the way of your voice and letting it respond to the exercise you are doing (simplified). This all starts with hearing sound not like someone listening to music but as a singer would listen to music. When I hear singing I hear tonel balance, energy in the voice and it is this that I use as a guide to singing.
This subject could easily take up a whole book!
A great place to start is to start to record your voice down and listen to it.Try this... record down your voice speaking the lyrics. Now listen back, did it sound restricted or sound natural and relaxed? Can you remember how it felt, was it comfortable or tense? If it felt and sounded comfortable then we can use this to bridge over into your singing.
      Try this…
Record your voice down, speaking the line you are about to sing, then sing it with the same effort and volume as you're speaking. Now listen back… did you hear and could you feel the same freedom in your singing and speaking or were they very different? Keep doing this until they both sound and feel the same. This will give you a great starting point for your singing.
Let me know how you go! :)
Also taking up meditation can really help.
      Dyl :)

I tried the tongue tension test in the other video since I am havin a lot of tongue root tension. The next thing is that I try these tongue tension exercises and notice that I carry more tension in my jaw than I do in my tongue. So I checked thiso video where there was more about jaw tension release exercises. When I did the goldfish and freezing cold exercises I noticed how my tongue is actually "tryin" to loosen up. My jaw is still quiet rigid and I could notice tension like where you normally have a tension headache. Another funny thing to add is that when I do the jaw release exercises my breathing is actually becoming more diaphragmatic. My jaw is not actually tightening forward but rather a backward movement, which is weird but thats just whats happening here. So letting you know all of this can I still continue the exercises? They kinda help :)

Hi Claudia, that all sounds great. Everything in singing is connected no one thing works without effecting another. great work I would keep doing the exercises and see what else it frees up.
Great job. remember that nothing should ever hurt.
If you want to take your singing to the next level and get some expert help with your voice I would suggest some singing lessons just to get you on the right track.
      Have a great day
      Dyl :)
