The Libertarian Utopia That Almost Caused A War

  • Located hundreds of kilometres south of Fiji and Tonga in the Minerva Reefs are almost relevant. However, in 1971, a group of ambitious American libertarians attempted to form their own micronation on the sunken atoll. The Republic of Minerva would have been a libertarian utopia; with no taxes or government intervention of any kind. Fortunately (unless you’re a right-wing libertarian) the plans ran aground as the nations surrounding the Minerva Reefs were less than impressed with their new neighbour. But although everyone agrees that The Republic of Minerva does not have a claim on the reefs, the area remains disputed today with both Tonga and Fiji claiming sovereignty over the reefs.

That's not to say I would never ever work with them, I simply don't know enough about them to judge. But, in any case, the ball is very much in their court and I'd be very surprised if they would be willing to support me. At least while I'm still a small creator, and of course if I were to blow up (won't happen but anyway) their abilityto help me would be diminished. The door there seems very very closed.

    There has to be sizeable natural Islands that poor and or corrupt countries are willing to sell to the Phoenix foundation.
    Or what they can do is send libertarian settlers To the Falkland Islands until they outnumber the British colonist then host an independence referendum

    • @Dave_Sisson
      @Dave_Sisson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Falklands are already self governing and very rich with the 4th highest per capita income in the world according to sources like the CIA factbook. So not surprisingly they have a high population growth rate, although their government is picky about about who they allow to work there. But in the words of one of their government's ministers, they can never be fully independent "because of the obvious military threat". So send the libertarians to somewhere that needs their money and has a very low population like Pitcairn Island which has 43 people.

    • @Soliloquy084
      @Soliloquy084  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Turns out no nation really wants a tax haven next door; and even if you get one nation to sell off a piece of territory to you other countries probably won't recognise you (like Northern Cyprus), furthermore, a subsequent government of the nation you purchased the area from could declare the sale illegal and exert control. And even if by that point you have some level of a defence force, if you're not liked by your other neighbours there will probably be a larger, richer, and more powerful ally of the people you bought the territory off willing to help them correct their mistake.
