    We receive many calls and emails asking about what is a good semi-truck to buy. Avoiding a bad truck purchase can save you time and money. In this video, I will share tips to help you when purchasing a semi-truck. I have seen a lot of new owners buying trucks with issues. Some of you guys may not be mechanics, so I hope this video helps.
    The first tip I would like to cover when purchasing is buying a used or new semi-truck. Some used trucks seem like a good deal, but it could cost you later down the road in repairs. Whether buying from a dealership, an individual owner, a trucking company, or a fleet, maintenance records are vital. Most truck PMs are due around 15-30k, 150k, 300k, and 500k miles. It is ideal for gathering as many maintenance records as possible. If an extended pm service is being used, for example, oil changes at 30-50k, be sure to check for records of oil samples. Running an oil sample right before a purchase is not helpful. Oil samples are most accurate when sampled right before an oil change. Purchasing a truck without proper maintenance records is risky, especially on units with over 500k miles and after-treatment systems.
    Deleted trucks or recently deleted trucks is something I would avoid. Unless maintenance records prove the truck has been in service with no issues, even if the tune is less than a year to a year, this type of purchase is even riskier. I've had guys show up to the shop with low power issues, later finding out a new cylinder head needed replacement due to an improper tune.
    If you are buying used, understand a high volume of trucks will hit the market when the fleet turns them in. Usually, fleets will do the bare minimum when it comes to preventive maintenance. We have seen used fleet trucks with issues due to lack of maintenance. Fleet owners turn in units at around 400-500k miles to exchange for newer models. The units usually are cleaned up for resale. In some cases, a fleet truck can be the worst truck to buy due to lack of maintenance. When purchasing a new or used semi-truck, be sure to read and understand the warranty. Most third-party warranties can be tough to deal with when a repair happens.

    Be great to do a video on how to hook up a laptop and cost of software and interface and training involved so we take some of the guess work out of buying a used truck. Defiantly going to try an independent shop to have the truck looked at before buying. But as you mention sometimes it is difficult to find a good shop. Anything to help would be amazing I am finding it quiet stressful shopping for used Trucks

    Good info...do you have any trucks for sale?

  • @gamblesc1
    @gamblesc1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned in one of your videos that you can hook up engine via laptop computer. When hooked up you can see a lot of information that a seller can not delete. I was interested in for instance the percentage of time engine was idling versus running at highway speed. Due to the ash buildup and potential problems with trucks idling. How practical would it be to have an average truck buyer bring his or her laptop and plug in to see that information? Perhaps there are rental systems one can get when going to look at trucks. Be great to use this technology to weed out lemon trucks before finding a good candidate to take to the mechanic for pre - purchase inspection?

      He is 100% correct, but trying to get maintenance records good luck. I have 2015 Mx-13 from a fleet and dumped a lot of money just getting everything right until def problems. Couldn’t find anyone to fix it correctly. I even called TAT express I was desperate and 6,000 in the hole. Two week wait they told me. So against my better judgement I got a tune done. Now no engine problems. Number one parts are double freightliner parts. Fuel mileage is good not great. All said and done I am going to get a pre emissions truck. I hope it helps a little....

    • @TATEXPRESSINC
      @TATEXPRESSINC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diesel, as long as the engine has been well maintained you will have a better chance of having a good engine. Sometimes the maintenance is pushed off to the next owner of the truck. A Paccar is more expensive and most shops will not have software to troubleshoot.

    • @TATEXPRESSINC
      @TATEXPRESSINC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, my apologies we could not get to you. We understand the frustration of costly repairs. If the sellers do not have maintenance records then more than likely maintenance was not done. In addition, DOT requires all carriers to keep maintenance records

    • @woodpen879

      @@TATEXPRESSINC everything is good now. I only wish there were other places that know what they are doing. After three trips to the Kenworth dealership they couldn’t properly diagnose my problem. It ended up that my def filter was cracked which I believed crystallized my scr. It’s a snowball effect. I plan to sell the truck after the note is paid. $30,000 for an in frame is out of site. I have recommended 2 people anyway. Your shop is well needed.

    • @anthony1636
      @anthony1636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Diesel. Like all engines the key is Maintenance. I run Paccar and I have never had a major problem. But I change the oil & filters on a regular basis. I would recommend Paccar but do ask for maintenance records. I have put 350,000 miles on this power plant and it has been a reliable work horse. As for Fuel consumption that is more down to the driver than the vehicle, I get an average 8.5mpg but then again I keep my speed to a max of 65mph.

    My 2016 vnl was the biggest mistake I ever made in the trucking industry. I bought it brand new and after a year or was just different issues one after the other. After it basically bankrupted me I took the last $14000 I had and bought another cascadia. I'll never buy anything else again.

    Why would large fleets not know what the most cost efficient service interval is?
    Maybe it is the small owners who live in and love their trucks, that overestimate how often it needs care?

      Absolutly nothing wrong with Paccar. I run one in a ( Pete ) I have put 350,000 miles on this one and have had great reliability. I have also never had any problem with finding a shop to work on it. The Truth is you will never convince a Cummings / Detroit / Cat.. man that there choice is not the best. Paccar is relatively new to the Market and so still has alot of convincing to do. But you cannot deny that Paccar sell more power plants in Europe than any other Engine maker.

      Florida Dreamer, Thanks for your input. I noticed a lot of fleets offering lease purchase. If the truck was not well maintained, than making the truck easy to buy does not fix the existing problems. It just changes who is responsible for the repairs.

    • @carlthor91
      @carlthor91 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TATEXPRESSINC No, they do the lease purchase deals, to tie the driver to the company. Slowly building up the pressure to take the short delivery time loads. You don't jump high enough to keep them happy. You just lost all the money you put in and the truck as well. STAY AWAY.
      Also a green motor (volvo) means you damned well better have lots of money to fix them ~25% higher cost of parts, you need to be able to cross the numbers to PACCAR part numbers, where possible. My good friend found out the hard way. He thought Peterbilt was expensive to maintain, he had his nose rubbed in that one real hard.
      Trucks all need work. If you stay on top of it, it shouldn't take you out of the game. People try to cut corners to get by. Don't work, it's all back there building a head of steam to come and roll over you. Fix it right the first time, small issues there after.
      Best wishes all, stay safe and warm.
