Recall the scene where the actors get in their first fight with the enemy along the tree line? Recall when ‘Speedman’ says, “And CUT!!!…. That’s the trailer, right there!” The trailer is footage that will be in the movie but also used in advertisements for the movie to make people want to see it. ‘Speedman’ is saying, “We performed that scene so perfectly it will be used to promote the movie!” The usual order is a writer writes a script. At that point the producer pays to ‘option’ the script into a movie for a set piece of time. If the Producer options ten scripts, he might actually make only one or two. In that time that he has optioned the script, no one else can make it, though. The producer then puts the money together to secure a director and some of the principal actors as well as the production company with all the cameras, lights, and all the physical pieces to actually film the thing. The studio will announce it’s making this or that movie. The announcement that a movie will be made might happen years before a single frame is shot. For a famous series, like the MCU, the studio will announce their planned lineup years in advance. Then footage of the movie will start to be shot. The explosions or gunfire on sets is often so loud that they don’t even use microphones for some shots. The actors will mouth the words with explosions behind him, then go in the booth to properly record him screaming “Watch out!” or whatever.
The whole notion of this movie being a disaster is the inefficiency of the production. Like in so many industries, time is money! An actor the stature of RDJ will have the next several years of his career mapped out. He’ll already have another movie lined up. Therefore, the movie he’s in only has him for so many shooting days. If all of his scenes aren’t done in that time, there will be a huge problem. The dailies are sent to the production company and they can see how the movie is shaping up or if something different needs to be done. Recall in the scene where we, the audience, first realize this is a movie set. RDJ is holding the mangled arms of ‘Speedman’ who can’t cry. RDJ is speaking angrily to the director and says, “…..and now we’re in ‘rewrite!” ‘Rewrite’ means what it says. The Director has determined that the scene cannot be done the way he originally envisioned it for some reason. It is then required for the whole production to shut down, the writers to write new dialogue, many different eyes must then sign off on the changes. Those changes come to set relatively slowly and may require resetting the camera and lights. ‘Being in rewrite,’ though is also symbolic of a troubled production. Word of production shutdowns always leak to the press, make producers EXTREMELY agitated and tends to lower the morale of an entire army of workers. While the changes are made, though, the clock runs. Every person must be paid but no one is actually doing anything to make the movie. Hair and makeup, camera operators, grips, wardrobe, props, special effects, craft services (the people who cook food on set for everyone), production assistants (or PAs) and many, many more are all on set, getting paid and not doing anything until the ‘rewrites’ come in. I saw a documentary on a famous producer and a woman who worked with him relays a story that the producer noticed the studio was charging $7 each for water bottles to the set. The producer dispatched PAs to a grocery store and bought water bottles for $1.25. She said that was the mark of a great producer: he had a HUGE vision of a sweeping epic movie he wanted to make and, at the same time, kept his eye firmly fixed on the tiny details that would save the production money.
It's a pity they hadn't seen Platoon before watching this movie, as a lot of the scenes were based on that movie - especially the one where Ben Stiller is "dancing".

I was literally impressed with Robert Downey Jr. playing a Black Dude and the amount of makeup he had made him so unrecognizable, but his eyes were the biggest takeaways on recognizing him. Heck I say Downey’s role on Tropic Thunder is in the same level as Bill Hader as Colonel Custer in _Night of the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian_ and Eddie Murphy as Mr. Wong in Norbit where they looked so unrecognizable with the amount of makeup and costuming.
The complexity of the speech on screen is lost in the translation, god knows what nonsense they are listening to. They are getting most of the understanding from visual context.
This is one of my favorite comedies, but a lot of the satire went way over their heads because of the pop cultural references. This was a very odd choice of movie whomever recommended it. It's just like when they watched The Hangover. People need to stop recommending these kinds of comedies because the reactors don't even understand half the jokes.
I wonder, if anyone told Babu and Raeen that the movie producer was played by the same actor as in Top Gun: Maverick. They recognized Robert Downey, Jr., but Tom Cruise's makeup made him equally unrecognizable, if not more so.
I’ll assume Raeen is actually interested in the process of movie-making. Recall the scene where the producer has a member of the crew punch the director in the head? ‘Les Grossman’ asks “Who here is the key grip?….. You?….. Go punch that director…..” For my friend, Raeen, any behind the scene worker who is responsible for moving and setting up equipment is called a ‘grip.’ I think the term comes from them using their hands so much. The Key Grip is the boss of all of those people. He is a person who is both experienced on a movie set and accustomed to lifting and moving all sorts of things onto sets. In other words, the Key Grip is a person accustomed to doing much physical labor over a long career. In other words, the Producer selected the person on set who is the physically strongest. In the scene you saw how big the person was and large his hands were? Les Grossman’s order would NOT have been the same had he said, “Who is the lead hairdresser?” or “Who is the makeup person?” While those are important jobs, to be sure, those people would not have been able to punch the director as hard.
I LITERALLY predicted this would happen the minute fanboys suggested what movies villagers should see. I called it by name. I’mm sure they have their own idea of Tom Cruise playing an aging foul-mouthed studio exec doing goofy dances, but…you would have to be as fed up with American Hollywood as Ben Stiller is to be as obsessed with the gag as western Reactor fanboys are. And that goes for the “Full R-tard” speech, which most of the fans don’t even remember was about the corny reactions to Forrest Gump and Rain Man’s Oscars.
I certainly don’t want to turn Raeen off of learning about the craft of movie-making but this movie brilliantly captures the two views of actors we all have. On screen we see them brave and heroic and self-less. Once the camera stops, however, we see the actors being petty, neurotic, on massive amounts of drugs and utterly self-absorbed. Though it’s less common now, you’ll see actors who play very macho, manly roles but who are hiding the fact that they…… shall we say…. prefer the company of other men.
I don't think movies about movies are a good idea. Films like Tropic of Thunder and scary movie are parodying other movies. Movies they haven't seen. If you had shown them Apocalypse now and Platoon then Tropic of Thunder it would have made more sense to them. I'd love you to show them western films that relate to India or Indian characters. 1982's Gandhi, Slumdog millionaire off the top of my head.
I love the movie, but I agree that half the jokes in the movie went over their heads because of the pop cultural references and satire. Dumb movie to get them to react to imo.
Almost the exact opposite of this movie is ‘Argo.’ A true story about a CIA rescue mission into Iran in 1979 when Iranians overran the American embassy. Many of the embassy workers were held hostage for months but a group of embassy workers managed to escape and were sheltered in the Canadian ambassador’s home. A mission was organized to give the Americans Canadian identities and had them pretend to be a film crew scouting locations for a movie. So, this was actors pretending to be soldiers. ‘Argo’ is embassy workers pretending to be a film crew.

Ireland and it's people are trying too value and preserve the culture and traditions/language alive in IRELAND ... please understand that the massive influence of foreign nationals/unrealistic numbers are destroying the IRISH culture from mass imagration...! Irish People are angry with the open border imagration policy's our government allows for monetary profit over the local populations interest in our future!!!
Sir, this is a Wendy's.
Please let my friend Raeen know that the ‘Iron Man/Tony Stark’ actor is named Robert Downey Jr but he is known throughout Hollywood by his initials: RDJ.
The next time Raeen sees him, tell him to just say, “Ah, RDJ!”
We’ll ALL think he’s cooler than we already do…..
Which is a LOT!
