    It took me two weeks of dyslexia to work out this wasn't an ancient spaceman.

      How do you know the ancient specimen is not also an ancient spaceman?

    Fun fact. If you look closely to the artwork of the ancient specimen and read the story trait logs of it, it is probably a fossil of a Bammoth. The curved back and the tusks are very similar and Ceres, the name of the frosty asteroid, is even mentioned on the logs, so it was a tease of the future dlc all along. But hey, that's just a theory.

    There is a big practical use for the ancient specimen that no one was looking out for thus far: since diamond has a lower shc than fossil and there is a net gain of 99kg mass, heat is actually multiplied by x176, so you could put in 1330 °C Diamond and out comes the same temperature fossil. Use this thermal energy to heat steam for a steam turbine and use a bit of that power to inject heat to diamond to 1330 again. Boom, infinite energy loop. You can even go crazier up to diamonds melting temp at ~3900°C but that will give you magma and then igneous rock so no lime for steel but a higher shc buffing the factor to x194. However, to achieve such temperatures one must use a high boiling liquid metal such as liquid steel, niobium, tungsten or uranium. What are your thoughts? Has anyone ever abused this? This is a significant practical use, right?

      hey, that;s a really nice find there. maybe i'll try it sometime. here's a joke to your seariousness. you could even grow wild blossoms for free at the light the specimen provides. that's 8w you get for free:))

    • @John_Smith476
      @John_Smith476 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Useful sure, but definitely not practical. Energy is quite easy to get in this game and especially something that requires dupe labor and isn’t expandable isn’t really a great way to go about things. Very cool idea though, could be a fun build.

      I don't think you are insane for trying out thousand degree chisel vs the specimen.

    It's also good to know that in the spaced out DLC, you can find vast amounts of fossil on the aquatic astroid too, more then enough for any steel you would ever want to make

  • @ulasuncu5721
    @ulasuncu5721 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The coal from hatches will also power a radbolt generator to run the diamond press, so long as a source of 1100 rads or more is available (easily achieved by wheezeworts). So in addition to being material positive the loop is also power positive and produces meat.
    The really useful part of this story is all the extra fossil you dig up along the way. This is incredibly useful if you dont have access to oil biome in your spaced out asteroid.

    the thing with early game fossil is it tends to get used up in lime production for steel, so by the time the end game comes around and you're building for aesthetics you dont have the fossil to spare and its natural tile looks so cool, but i do use a mod to place natural tiles with the corresponding mineral so this might not apply for purists lol

    • @_connorsseur
      @_connorsseur 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To add to that it's nifty for the True Tiles mod as an extra visual option without really being "cheaty" in any way-- just allows extra decoration options and to see what material a tile is without clicking on it and checking.

    I actually quite like the fossil query. It's quite useful, yet not overpowered by any means. Assuming the space out DLC, I always have everything I need to use it. Personally, I always farm arbor trees, so on the long run I'd rather use sage hatch and polluted dirts as precursors to diamond. By crushing the sedimentary rocks, the fossil query becomes a simple way to very efficiently turn my polluted dirt into filtration medium, essentially turning 1 kg of polluted dirt into 76 kg of filtration medium. I like that it uses labor from my artist, which means I don't need to branch my artist out into other skills for them to remain useful. Combined with polluted dirt from my arbor trees, filtration medium allows me to sustainably produce lots of oxygen and clay. When considering the lime I also get out of this, the fossil query essentially does the same thing as pokeshells, less scalable but much more efficient. TBH, I find pokeshells to be a pain in the butt to ranch, so I welcome the alternative.

    It's a sustainable way to get lime and therefore steel. That's the only use; there's so much on the water planet that it makes it irrelevant.

    • @GCFungus
      @GCFungus  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's what I was trying to get at - the quarry is nice but made a bit irrelevant by the things you can dig up.

    I'm not sure if I ran into a bug or it's a feature but I noticed that my masterwork dupe wouldn't perform the excavation commands. I believe this was because he was science incapable. Would appreciate if someone would test this as an independent party

    • @twicethebaka5640
      @twicethebaka5640 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes! ive fallen into the trap of making a yokel my decorator, and then him being unable to do the ancient specimen tasks! while the dupe only needs the masterwork skill, they still need to be able to/allowed to do the digging and research
