    The Engineering of this aside, you managed to edit one of the most compelling videos I've watched in a long time. I never expected to be gripped for the full 54 minutes even though I always thought the iMac G4 was the most beautiful system Apple ever built.
    Well done!

    Could this be done with an M1 board? Shoving an M1 Mac mini into one of these imac g4 bodies would be a dream...

    • @miguelmcnamara8405
      @miguelmcnamara8405 3 ปีที่แล้ว +185

      Yes, you should be able to, just get yourself an M1 Mac mini and pretty much just follow this video. It certainly shouldn’t be as cramped as the nuc on the video because the logic board is about half the size of the actual Mac mini. If you do choose to do this, then I wish you good luck

    • @mxmobile5619
      @mxmobile5619 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Other than the fact you’d need to chop two posts to get a secure spot to keep the board in, you can actually do it all without a new screen if you wanted to. Just need a driver board for the og lcd or buy a new screen for it.

    • @Lucas_van_Hout
      @Lucas_van_Hout 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@miguelmcnamara8405 someone put an M1 Mac mini in an g4 cube and was left with half of the space being empty. The body of the iMac G4 is probably big enough that you could straight up put an M1 Mac mini in there without even removing the shell? I don’t know the exact dimensions, but removing the shell or not, it would be an piece of cake.
      Hardest part would probably be to get a good usb hub so all the connectivity on the back will still work. Change the disk drive for an fast read and write blu ray drive (And give the Ethernet port 10Gbit capability while you are at it) and you are all set. Maybe source an compatible 4K screen as cherry on top although 1080 is already pretty good for an retrofit.

    • @LumaControl
      @LumaControl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      All m1 boards are relatively small, you just have to find the one with th right features. it'd probably pose less of a thermal issue as well because of the low TDP the m1 has.

    If you are interested in improving your design, I think some devices don't allow the use of extensions (hdmi, usb, etc.), I think you could unsolder the plugs from the motherboard, solder wires onto it instead and route them to the plugs in the back. Also when the glue retaining you plugs breaks, I suggest you try jb weld. There's also some free space to gain with this power supply situation. I feel kind of sorry for giving you suggestions, especially as I wouldn't have put myself into such a project, like all those other people complaining. I think what you already did is fantastic. I'm really hoping to see new videos from you in the future. Improvements on this project or a totally new version would be great.

    you have the "exhaust" fan on backwards (it's blowing INTO the case) and I would think the whole things gets REALLY HOT because you have all the vent holes in the very bottom blocked with you 'logic board' (the clear sheet of plastic the motherboard is mounted to) you NEED TO make sure air can flow in from all those hole, and the top fan's sticker (in the center of the fan... what you would think of as the 'back' of the fan) NEEDS TO be pointing UP and OUT of the top..... PLUS you need to get as much air on to the processor heatsink and fan as you can....
    otherwise.... THIS THING IS AMAZING!!! I AM SO IMPRESSED!!!!! WOW!!! EXCELLENT WORK!!!!

      @davidgreen4406 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@yosukerechain2000 This is true, but I'm asking why they chose to use the adapter, not how they actually did it. Theoretically, DC power could easily be extracted from the pico PSU rather than placing a bulky AC power adapter inside the iMac housing. In the video, I noticed that the adapter took up quite a lot of space inside the already cramped computer, so I was just curious why they chose to build it this way. Maybe there was not enough wattage overhead in the pico PSU to handle the additional load, but if this were the case, I think the computer would be experiencing some other serious problems anyway...

    You should build a heatsink that can connect the white fan to the CPU directly. Also the problem of using a USB hub is that connecting external hard drives will be a problem since they need more power. It would be nice how the temperatures work inside that build but looks hard to get nice temperatures. But amazing work tho. A lot of patience 🥰

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jorysbeard3657 my initial comment was meant to be educational, or if there was a reason behind his decision, I was hoping for the channel owner to share it. I liked the build, and wish him continuous growth and success with his channel and future projects.
      It was because I liked the project so much was that I made my comment, in case he didn't knew how USB bandwidth and PCIe lanes work on a motherboard to take advantage of its full potential, precisely because the build is awesome and he went through a lot of work to achieve it.

    I think you should use a 20p to usb3 connector instead of F to M wires, as well as the audio connector. Use the IO on the motherboard for front panel may save lots of space and can avoid wire break due to too much curves. This is my own view, but you did it, really a nice one! so amazing and so completable!

    Are you serious with what sound card you put in this? This thing is supposed to be a Mac, and Macs have insane sound cards!
    That project is great but I think you could do some future upgrades, like:
    -replacing the USB cables by longer ones so that you don't need a USB hub as it slows the ports down.
    -get the whole system powered by only the original power connector (easier than you think, you could open the PSUs so they take less space).
    -then that last jack connector could become another audio output because why not, or it could get connected to the original microphone through the arm, and then you can choose to use it by connecting a jack cable from its plug to the mic input.
    -replace that horrible sound card, it is easy to use the onboard audio, you could even solder wires under the board and use no connectors.

    amazing job with this video! I loved every bit of it! There are a few of things that I might have done differently though.. I think a better cooler (Noctus makes a low profile called the NH-L9x65 which is designed for Mini ITX buids. I would have moved that wifi antenna to the back of the LCD panel (behind the metal chassis and the plastic shell). I would have put in a better case fan and connected it to the motherboard PWM header, this way you can monitor VRM temps and have the BIOS adjust the fan RPM accordingly. Keep up the amazing work! Cheers 🍻🍻 from New Orleans Louisiana.

    If you remember the screen not stopping until entropy... you'd never lay the whole thing down as you did @ 3:10 putting stress on the top of the screen. The proper way is to place a towel or soft cloth on the surface and swivel the screen so that it lies flat on the surface when you want to open the computer from below. That part is correct.
