If you find a Commodore 64 I am buying, my mom was scammed by my real psychopath cousin in 1982 and was fooled to buy from his at retail price his shitty abused Commodore VIC20, it ruined my childhood since we went in every shop trying to buy games for it but obviously was too old. I have tons of traumas so I finished studying psychology at my 40´s my friend. This is for real!

I 'm so pleased that you were contacted to go through this treasure trove first - it's not so much that the items are "worth" £'s it's that some of these items will shortly just be pictures in a book or on the internet. Commodore Pet in the skip? Crazy.

Look Mum NoW Computer - RESPECT! Every town needs a warehouse for intercepting such treasure and making sure a bunch of otherwise-unemployable people can forge a livelihood by helping to sort, repair and re-use / re-house / re-sell landfill rescues. Should be govt backed and cover more stuff too. Sam, lead the way!

Beautiful things! Very envious of the Apple IIIs. A local thrift store has a Lisa I wish I had the space and money for.
As morbid as this sounds, it's probably a good reminder to everybody with their own tech collections to have some kind of arrangement to get their stuff taken care of if something should happen to them. I know my wife isn't as knowledgeable - or enthusiastic - as I am about some of the kit I have; I should make sure she at least knows how to contact some of my makerspace friends to help her sort through it all if something bad happens.

    A truly amazing find!.
Used to use the Exidy Sorcerer at school.
Friend and I spent months coding in Z80 machine code a basic sprites based version of Frogger lol.
The side slot held the cart containing Basic.
No synth chips in it, unlike the C64.
Used the MicroProfessor in college, cool unit.
The eddystone radio looked in mint condition & I believe that is a tube radio.
Glad it's gone to worthy people, able to appreciate the tech

Awesome video! Great to see the Exidy Sorcerer. I grew up with this machine and every fortnight, spending the weekend at my father's place, was Exidy Sorcerer time for me. Learned the basics of basic, Z80 assembly and CP/M.

That house is a goldmine! Those IBM’s will do pretty well as your office computer to do your accounting, wordprocessing and museum inventory database management on. They’re not particularly musical but they where the office worker’s trusty workhorse. They do need an MS-Dos boot disk though. Word Perfect and Lotus 1-2-3 where the killer apps for it. And odd thing about them is that they actually have a version of basic built in the bios rom, which starts if it can’t find a dos boot disk. Clone PC’s don’t have this. However IBM’s didn’t have a setup utility in the rom, they needed a disk for that whereas most clone pc’s have a built-in setup screen.

Wow Sam, What a treasure trove! Laserdisc is a fun media to collect; Some things (films mostly) you can only see on that format. watch out for disc rot though; older discs weren't as durable as CD/DVD/Etc. Also, the Exidy Sorcerer is a rare and sought-after computer in some circles. It was released in 1978 and was made by Exidy, who were best known for making arcade machines. It stuck around until 1983. That right there is a class A find!

That loft reminds me of one of the "Commodore enthusiasts" that occasionally posts a video through the Amiga groups on FB...Piles of unsorted PETs and CBM machines all over the place with little care or regard. Unhealthy obsession and really no way to care for the old equipment if preserving and enjoying it really is your passion.

Oh! My! Word! You made me feel ancient! 😄 I had the SEIKOSHA printer. Excruciating slow and loud. It used a "uni-hammer" printing mechanism. Basically a long, stretched gear spinning behind the paper. In front of the paper was the ink ribbon and then a moving head with a single C-shaped hammer. To print a column of dots, the hammer was fired 7 times as the "gear behind the paper spun.

I bought one of those laserdisc players recently. They're kind of mad inside. Mine sort of works but the belt is gone so still working on it. That particular model uses a hene laser tube rather than a diode type. Also, be wary that it can only play LD's with analogue sound.. it'll play the video but lacks the decoder for digital audio!

There's a few videos out on TH-cam about the Exidy Sorcerer computers. My dad used to work for them and managed to get one when I was about 5 or so. I used to write basic programs into it. It has cartridges that fit into the right side of the computer that appear to be re-purposed 8-track tape cartridges with PCBs in them. If I remember correctly, the computer didn't do much of anything without these. Interested to see what you can do with it!

The TORCH is a recased BBC Micro with addition of the integrated monitor and modem. BBC's processor is a 6502, but the Torch has a Z80 second processor as standard so should be multi-OS (Acorn DFS & CPM).

    • @ednasdiscomachine6049

  • @paultreneary

A Tatung Einstein!! Still got some bits somewhere - never used it for music but it had ports galore including a Midi IIRC.
And a BT Tonto (OPD?) - another from my earlier (though not earliest) programming days! My work one had a colour screen and an external 3.5" drive. As you say, it wasn't anything more than a Sinclair with two MDs, a phone and a modem - I only ever hooked it up to BBs in the day. Had loads of those plug-in modules but I can't recall what we used them for.
Footnote: Fry and Laurie had one of the B&W OPD/Tonto screens sat on the desk in one or two of their sketches (but no keyboard) IIRC.

I'm really pleased that the old computers were saved from the landfill. But I'm also envious, of course. 🙂
My computers and video games aren't all jumbled up, but I also often wonder what will happen to the junk if I get run over by a truck tomorrow.
A few years ago, however, I experienced something comparable with a very large arcade (IIRC 3,000 m²?) with hundreds of arcade machines. Scrap collectors broke open the cabinets, smashed all the picture tubes just to get at the copper coil. What a shame.

The exidy Sorcerer is a computer to keep. It has expansion units (including a BASIC one of course), a pretty good operating system, and it could run CP/M if you had a hard drive. Can be expanded to a decent amout of RAM (for the time: 48K if I remember correctly). I wrote so much software for that thing!

Reel to reel tape recorders were my first electromechanical disection, from jumble sales, in big wooden boxes. Its so important to have experience of dismantelling something, its a pity more stuff thats thrown away couldn't be given to schools to dismantle. lessons can explain how the device works, electronicaly, where the materials come from. A lesson just for taking things apart, they can go for recycling afterwards , doesnt have to be perfect the alternative was to scrap it whole. more fun than a rat .

The North American variant of the Sirius-1, the Victor 9000, was my very first PC. I got it second-hand. Really brings memories flooding back of writing short stories in WordStar.
It's quite a notable machine for its era, offering better speed and more memory as a PC clone at a very competitive price. It came with DOS and CP/M 86. And that Keytronic foam-and-foil keyboard was tops!

That Apricot was the first computer I ever used. It boots in MS-DOS and has a proprietary GUI called "Activity" -- if you don't have a mouse you move the arrow around with the numpad. It can run GW-BASIC, and ours had the usual word processor and spreadsheet etc that every 'serious' early 80s computer had. Music-wise, I don't recall it doing anything more exciting than a simple beep, so probably not much use to you!

  • @StevesVariousStuff

Random note for the Apricot - it runs a proprietary version of MSDOS (v3.1, I think?) as it has non-standard interrupts and won't run the regular version.
There should be a small orange-ish CRT that goes with it.
The Tatung Einstein used to use the 3 inch disks, and ran a version of CP/M although you could also get Spectrum emulator and I think it could read Spectrum +3 disks in the emulator. I don't remember much about the sound quality or music ability, although I think you could use one of the DIN sockets as a MIDI port.
The Echosoft looks like it's for a 48k Spectrum. Probably pre-dates the +2 and +3 so may not work on those as the bus connector power was slightly different.
The Turtle plotter will be probably for the BBC micro (we had one at school) or the Apple II
Hope that helps with the epic treasure trove

My dad bought a Sirius for work, it has it's own room and a kick arse A3 sheet feed daisy wheel printer in a sound proof box. It was used to generate rent letters and account rolls. he told me it was the equivelent to 15 ladies with type writers and wages and never made a mistake, when he ran the printer it sounded like a machine gun going off, it would go through big boxes of green/white lined paper. Must have been early to mid eighties some real history there. We also Has a PET at home it never did any real work but I remember playing space invaders on it!

Good to see interest in the Torch machines. Yours look to be early versions as the boot ROM reports v72. The earliest known version that's been dumped is v71 from 1982, and was continually developed upto 1986. Your v72 hasn't been dumped so would be nice to have it archived.

Maybe you can use the "one per desk" as a terminal. It should have an RS232 interface, so you can connect modern equipment.
Or modems, so you can let two terminals chat with each other via your telephone exchange.

16:32 my first computer was a Amiga 500+, I had a music video of Pink Floyd on 10 floppy disk 1.44" and to watch it all at once I had a tower of 10 floppy disk drives connected 🙈😂
It also had some programs for creating music on it...

That loft was indeed an amazing place for the nerds like us.
Laserdisc player together with a nice collection of movies? Not just one, but two IBM PC XT's, the machine of my early childhood? Apple IIe and III? Commodore 64C and P500? Dot matrix printers? NIB NOS One Per Desk? Other computers, monitors, keyboards? I'm totally geeking out. Joy forever.
And the RIFA capacitors are such a plague that it's ridiculous. Kill it with fire before it does it itself!

A point to watch on the Sirius: some of them had 'constant linear velocity' floppy drives - they won't read standard discs. You'll need someone with a working one to make you a boot disc if there isn't one amongst the stuff.

Cub dark screen is an RGB monitor = had one with my Beeb. The Apricot is more than likely a CP/M machine. Yep Virglen is defintely a Beeb re-cased. The Act Sirius I think is CP/M, I use to play space wars on that machine it was the only game we had, my father had it for business, way before we got the Model B BBC. The Tandy TRS 80 I think is complete, my friend had one of those, it's just a home computer. BTW great channel!

Would be great to see that laser disc player running, but unfortunately very few of those early machines still work. It's not a modern semiconductor laser in there like in a CD or DVD player, it's a big old helium-neon gas tube, and it seems they don't stand the test of time.

I just caught a glimpse on my lab's (hopefully not too near) future.
Hope my 40 years of Apples, Sinclairs, Commodores, Ataris, peripherals, docs, manuals, magazines and odd electronics will find their Sam and get a new life. I probably won't reach the end of my own to-do list - it's not that I'm planning to die soon or anything, it's just that the to-do list is MANY arms long.
In the end, the most valuable and irreplaceable thing is the knowledge of the previous owner. Imagine if he were there, helping you identify and connect everything.

Wow, a retro computer guys dream loft. I just recently saved a big plastic tote of vinyl records from a house that was getting demolished on the property where we keep our cows on pasture. Looks like a bunch of old country and Jazz neither of which I'm much into. I just couldn't let good vinyl get demo'd like that though. I don't think any of them are in pristine condition. They were all standing on into stacked up in the plastic tote and there was a few mouse droppings on the edges :(
