    And now design one. And build the capsule, then you start to understand why they are so expensive. (though designing the body is by no means a trivial task).
    Good video.

    Did you try some of the vintage 1970s U87s?

      Yes i have! but I tend to use the newer U87 at recording studios.

    You need to research the frequency response this is THE cleanest mic for spoken word. Boosts speech and has flat mids. If you don’t like your clone sure but the U87 OG is the industry standard rn and it sounds great on every album I’m hearing it on lol

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      KWT I agree and I don’t hate it. It’s not my first choice though. It just depends on the voice and music.

    Take a look at the AMI Tabfunken works U47 kits. I heard a vocal cut done with that mic, it was very very close to the Neumann. I’m not s big u87 fan, I prefer the 67 or the 47

    The U87 is a very neutral microphone. It works on a lot. That's why it has the reputation it does. It's not my favorite either and I own one.

  • @isaackhaw9418
    @isaackhaw9418 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Does the kit come with tutorial or any detailed instructional guide? I m thinking of buying one.

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It comes with a manual, but you definitely need to know basic soldering/electronics skills.

  • @SoundReserveStudio
    @SoundReserveStudio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just curious, why would you create a u87 clone if you didn't really care for the mic in the first place? Why not create something you actually want to own or is your favorite? Amazing work by the way, the mic sounded pretty damn good. I own a u87ai myself and a AKG C214 which isn't expensive but its still a good mic.

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The site offered this FET mic and a bunch of tube mics. I wanted to build the tube mics for this class, but it looked a lot more difficult. Tube mics require a separate power supply, and the kit involved building that as well. I might do it one of these days, but the price for the clone kits are pretty expensive. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching!

    Hey I actually have a u87 and my xlr wires are broke and I tried soldering then back except I just don't know the paths! You have any suggestions??

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you know how to signal trace on a circuit board? Check out the schematics. I'm sure you can find them online. It really depends on how it broke. Take a look at where it's connected and reverse engineer it. Last resort, send it in to get fixed. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    • @FIRSTxCLASSxMUSIC
      @FIRSTxCLASSxMUSIC 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bradly0505 thanks buddy, so I may have to send it in because my u87A is a older model and they don't not sell parts separate 😒 I hate to see what they will charge me.

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try asking Advancedaudio.ca They make clones, but the guy used to fix u87s back in the day. He can also modify microphones as well.

  • @ajafterparty
    @ajafterparty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    funny you're saying the u87 has too much sibilance... are you sure it wasnt your preamp? u87's arent known to be sibilant, in fact... the have a rolloff around 13khz

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AJ Afterparty Sibilance in the human voice is often centered in the five to eight kHz range. Lower than the roll off you state. Sound on Sound Magazine states that it can be around four to ten kHz as well. I prefer tube microphones on vocals. Everything is subjective though.

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's pretty close to that. Everyone is different though. Cheers, Brad

    • @ajafterparty
      @ajafterparty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bradly0505 typically when people say mics are too sibilant they refer to the cheap China manufactured mics that sound thin and have a boost in the highs 8khz and above. Your clone definitely sounds like it has a sibilance boost but not in the cheap way. Have you compared it to a real u87?

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct when you say China manufactured mics sound thin, but that is because of the cheap diaphragm. I have heard some good Chinese mics before. Yes I put it side by side with a U87ai, and it's pretty damn close. I have the session somewhere, but it's been years. I'm happy with this clone, but I built it mainly because it was for a school project. I'd buy an Advanced Audio clone if I wanted a cheaper U87.

    • @ajafterparty
      @ajafterparty 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bradly0505 yeah, or a microphone-parts clone. I have the real deal, but I kind of want a tube mic, a 47, 251 or c12 style. Haven't decided. Have u built one of those?

      Bradly0505 close but has a bit more mid range

  • @garyshirinian

    Great work however, does it really sounds like U87 ? Or close to it .

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's really close. I AB'd it to a real one, and I couldn't hear a difference. I have the session somewhere. It's probably lost though.

      Thx for replying.
      Which one is more versatile between U47 and U87 where you can use for male and female voice. Also where did you get the kit so someday if I decide I may build my own thx.

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Shirinian to be honest it doesn’t really matter. A good singer is a good singer. I would prefer the u47 because it’s not as bright as the u87. I’m a big fan of tube mics for vocals. But realistically I can’t tell what mic gets used on records. I can tell the difference between dynamic and condenser on vocals. Definitely cannot point out specific mics.

    the mic youre on is picking up your lisp very heavily, and that acoustic guitar had serious annoying string squeak, sounded good otherwise

    • @lessthanthreebrad
      @lessthanthreebrad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      microphones are subjective. Sounds like this wouldn't be the mic for you. Thanks for watching.

      no offence buddy, just an observation, have a listen to advanced audio mics they build mics based on u87 u67 u47 etc, a company out of Vancouver Canada, www.advancedaudio.ca
