Historic wicker pram for a baby
I welcome you to today's video, where you saw the renovation of a historical pram, the so-called "kukań", or also "košatina or košinka",
The use of strollers as a means of transporting children is a relatively young thing.
The Duke of Devonshirt had the first carriage built for his child in 1733.
A pony or a goat, but also a dog, was harnessed behind the cart on wheels. Another improvement was the addition of a handle, by which the cart could be pushed or pulled.
The buggies looked like miniature carriages.
Prams were only made to order, as they were a matter for wealthy families.
Around 1900, around 20 companies began to deal with production in the territory of Austria-Hungary.
Three large companies were established in Bohemia, in 1904 the company Hirsh & co in Trnovy near Teplice, another in Vansdorf near Cheb, and in 1923 the company of Antonín Svoboda, which produced strollers of the brand Liberta.
This pram "Kukaň" very quickly got into the subconscious of customers and even today's generation likes to remember it with nostalgia.

Is there no end to your talents, Radek? Outstanding job! In America, in the 1950’s (when I was born), we had “strollers”. They were mostly used for toddlers (1yr+). They were made so the child could sit up and look forward while being pushed by parent. Infants were carried in a basket-like carrier with handles or pushed along in one of these (prams).

Another brilliant restoration! This one brought back memories of my childhood when nannies in Central Park would "air" babies in similar prams - including my little brother! That was a (very) long time ago - but your wonderful restoration brought it all back as though it was yesterday. Thank You!

Absolutely fantastic work, look at that suspension too! Whatever baby gets carried in that pram will be fortunate, and they'll have a beautiful pram to gift to their children's children. I am not suprised you had to strip it down to bare wicker! You did an outstanding job on the wicker repair. The fluff and fabric looked super! Well done and thanks for the history!

Impressive, I'm guessing that carriage is at least 80-100 years old, yet the wicker is relatively undamaged except in a few spots. My experience with wicker is that it becomes brittle and falls apart over time. Either someone took good care of it, or it was stored in such a manner as to slow the dry rotting process. Fabulous job of restoring it as always.
Mostly these strollers end up on the ground where a layer of dust settles on them for years. But you are right, wicker is very fragile... Thank you Denise :)

I had a wicker pram with a burgundy top for my kids back in 1978-1983, I LOVED IT!!!
This stroller was manufactured in 1937.

I love old prams. They are so much nicer looking than what we have today even if today’s prams are more convenient for transporting in vehicles etc.

Prams like this were common in Australia in the 40s I remember them from childhood unlike the baby carriages from England they were cooler for our climate beautiful restoration.

Incredible work. Looks amazing! I restored a horse size Meadowbrook carriage. It took my husband and I 9 months to complete. It was very rewarding and fun. Many memories.

That pram is beautiful! It was in surprisingly good shape for wicker. If I ever have kids, I think I'd prefer a pram as opposed to today's strollers. I've seen the pediatrician's waiting room, those things are massive and take a lot of space.
My grandmother used to have wicker furniture. They're hard to find now because people don't make them anymore.

This lovely restoration brings to mind a chant we used to sing in school (when we were skipping or playing 'chapping' in the playground), and we used it to gently tease our class mates who liked each other by using their names in this chant; it went as follows:
" Suzie and Johnny sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G; first comes the love, then comes the marriage, then comes a little baby sitting in a carriage!"
