Granny Square Day: Chaos Crocheting a Granny Square Cardigan with Handspun Yarn (Berroco Ariana)

  • Hello friends! I might have called Granny Squares boring in my last video, so for that, and with the advent of Granny Square Day, I need to repent. So today we shall be making a Granny Square Cardigan. Of course I am making this out of handspun yarns, because handspun garments are just pure and utter magic.
For this I am using Berroco's Ariana cardi pattern, which is a free crochet pattern which you can find here: berroco.com/pa...
If you want to join in on the chaos, you can join the patreon via: / mijnwolden
You can also find me on Ravelry and Instagram as @MijnWolden
If you enjoy spinning, yarn, knitting, fiber arts or any other traditional craft then this channel is right up your alley. Maybe you could hit that subscribe button?

I too think granny squares are boring
I too think this looks absolutelly GORGEOUS!!!!!
My yarn, mostly untwists too, especially when crocheting
But sometimes it overtwists itself, especially when holding 2 yarns together
    It's a nightmare

The cardigan is adorable on you. And the fact that you made it all the way from the fleece is super cool. Also, I really appreciate you mentioning international granny Square day. I work at a library that has a yarn craft club that actually meets tonight, and I’m sure that several of them do not know about that. And we are going to be adding it to our programming calendar. So thank you!

I love that you used the yarn you had and rearranged the colors in your squares. I also love that when you ran out of the white yarn, you spun some more. If more people used what they have, instead of rushing to a store to buy more of something, the world would be a healthier and greener place. The results are much more artistic and "granny chic" than having all the squares look the same. I think the sweater will keep you warm and cozy this winter, and you will love snuggling up in it. harpingJanet

I'm an eastern uncrossed knitter who sometimes crochets, and I spin all my yarn for a Z ply. S plied yarn untwists so much when I knit English style. Using my handspun is so much nicer than any S ply yarn because of this.

Hello!! I found your channel a few months ago (actually probably about the time this video was published, as I was JUST venturing into spinning with a drop spindle I’d purchased 2 years prior in August) and 100% have been binging your content this week as I prep my first fleece on my new-to-me spinning wheel! (Also an Ashford traditional - her name is Edna, as her original owner was Amish so I picked one I hoped was close).
I saw the clip on your IG on the SZ vs ZS twist and had to come here to find the source content. As a new spinner, this really intrigues me! I’ve had so many yarns start to lose twist as I knit (especially when casting on) that I’m considering the experiment myself. Thank you for creating these videos and continuing to put out content. I truly enjoy the shenanigans and your quirky sense of humor!

Hmm, you gave me an idea. Though I did not hand spin any of it, maybe my teacher did? I did dye a lot of skeins with foraged plant matter, and then over-dyed them with indigo. They are gorgeous and though different colors they do all match together, and I think I have at least a sweater quantity of these yarns. I hope I'm not too confident and over estimating the amount of yarn I have, but It would actually make a really cool granny square cardigan! And you already supplied a pattern, so thank you for that! (Just I am already working on enough projects and when I finish all my 21 tour de fleece mini skeins (I just plyed day 15 today, and have skipped day 1, do 6 more to go?) I want to make a polka dot jersey sweater with those... I think the actually granny square cardigan making will take quite a while before that gets started, probably some more granny square days. But at least it's a really nice idea!

Now jokes aside, I too need to confess, and I hang my head in crocheter shame - I did not know about Granny Square day 😔. I need to take this up with my Happy Hooker friends, they too did not know - and we will make amends by doing something next year.
