Just want to thank you for sharing. My husband built this and it's been great. No squirrels and we have multiple feeders. It's worked out great. Thank you!!
You might not need something permanent like concrete. Just dig a 3 foot deep hole, place your post in it, throw old pieces of broken concrete to stabilize the pole and fill the hole with crushed stone that easily packs down. Never have standing water and the pole can be moved if you so desire. Nice design. I like the flashing idea.
Very nice simple and effective. If you remake or build another here's a few tips. They make galvanized pipe that fits over 4x4 nicely. Instead of cement just use gravel. That's what contractors use, much easier. On the feeder use springs instead of the perch. The birds don't mind but they won't support the squirrel. Have fun.
Simpler and less labor intensive would be a length of 4"/6" galvanized stovepipe! Slip it over before installing the post. Lowes/Home Depot/Ace Hardware..
I've used pvc gutter down tube over a 2x4 post for a bird house . Haven't had any get up the plastic. Can't grip their claws to run up.Never have to paint it either.Don't put bird house any where near a tree or fence.Another way I've used a 24" piece of stove pipe 6" dia. held up on a pipe by a cap made for top. I intend to replicate this for our yard, my wife and I love seeing the birds coming in for a visit. We added a slinky to stop squirrels from climbing the post and made the post two feet higher, total of 6 ft, … we no longer have squirrels messing with our feeders.
I'd say your greatest liability is the overhead branch that they ultimately learn to jump from. Once they get on that cross of 2x4's, all is lost. At least that's what happened for me.... you have an 'interesting' collection of videos, I must say :)
Great feeder. I've been feeding the birds for a few years now. I still haven't come a across a squirrel proof feeder yet. Best to leave some thing out for them too, away from the birds if possible.
Chris, I've tried bribing/distracting the squirrels with nuts (peanuts-in-a-shell, walnuts and chestnuts) - placed well away from my birdfeeders, and the result was attracting squirrels from all over the neighborhood. And there will always be one or two who will help themselves to the birdfeeders.
I've tried a lot of different squirrel detergent...the only thing that works 100% of the time on my pole feeders, is to use a slinky toy on each one. No upkeep needed, no buying expensive baffles, sticky stuff, hot sauce, etc. I make sure to keep the poles 7 to 10 feet away from anything else the squirrels can climb and jump from. The squirrels might jump on the slinky, but they just bob up and down on the slinky and then dismount! Doesn't hurt the little critters, but protects your feeders!
+John M. Slinkys never worked for me. The squirrels would reach through the coil to grip the pole. Wrapping a pole in sheet metal like I've done here is the ONLY thing that works for me (and keeping it several feet away from other objects, of course). Thanks for watching.

I have used several of those spikes. I have never been able to drivr onr in striaght, usually because of unground rocks. Seems like you had better luck with that one.
Let me clue you, squirrels can jump 6 to 7 feet. I thought I had this problem solved until I seen one run and jump right up on the feeder. It is 6 feet off the ground. It will deter MOST squirrels.
The height of the metal is six feet, but its towards the top of the pole so a squirrel would have to jump over 8ft straight up to get to the feeders. This far not a single squirrel has done it! :)
They will try anything including jumping off trees that are higher than your bird feeder. From a high vantage point, 10-12 feet is not out of the question! Good thing they aren’t flying squirrels!

Condensed version, 4 X 4 PT pole painfully wrapped with flashing. A very effective cure to prevent climbers, but by using white 6" X 10' PVC pipe, over the 4 X 4, sunk in the ground a couple feet, provides a much more stable station, and 20 times more decorative, with less work. Live and learn.

I am not trying to keep squirrels from my feeders, we don’t have much difficulty with squirrels. But I need to get my feeders higher than my iron shepherd hooks. have you considered 5" diameter galvanized air venting pipe? should fit around your 4by4 post opens and closes with simple crimping already built into the piping
What you could do on the bottom of it I’ve done it is build a box around it not a big one you can go 12 x 12 maybe 8 foot high put around it put a little bit of rocks in it and then throw in some wire and the rest of the concrete that that would work that would hold it pretty good
Laaaaaaaaate reply. But if you (or anyone else) is still wondering: almost impossible to dove/big bird proof flat feeders. However, doves (and many large birds) don't like safflower. So if you use safflower seeds in flat feeders, you attract less troublesome birds.
I think 4x4 is around 3.75x3.75. So that means 3.75 x 4 = 15. So even without taking into account the idea that the flashing isn't exactly flat up next to the post, it means a little bit wider than 15" flashing is needed. However, I think what you have done with a standard side of flashing and not needing to buy another sheet, looks fine and should be ok!
You are right! The words SHORT CUT should be replaced with the FRUSTRATING, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER LONG CUT!!! I got pretty good at discouraging squirrels but the bear, no way! He killed 2 expensive poles, multiple gorgeous feeders and scared the hell out of my walking neighbor. Thank goodness my dog wasn't out there. No more feeders here 😥 Just saw a YT vid on loosely wrapping tulle around the pole. The tulle gets caught in their feet and they hate it. Also works on moles, groundhogs, etc. and will protect fruit in gardens. She said loosely or even pleating it (hold in a few spots with zip ties). You are creative, think about it. Worth a try before you remove your trees. Look for the vid in here.
Sorry about the bears. They are definitely a concern with bird feeders. Honestly, you could make a bear proof version of this by using a thicker, stronger pole! :) Thanks for the other squirrel-proofing suggestions.
You should confided feeding the squirrels as well, doesn’t have to be in your yard. But they need food too. I rescued a baby girl squirrel. I’d say she’s smarter and more loving than most humans as well 😘😉
They also make bird seeds that contain a type of pepper. Birds don’t taste it when they eat it....but squirrels do. It would save time building such a structure.
In my experience squirrels just develop a taste for spicy food, and that bird seed costs much more than the bulk seed I buy now. This structure was simple to build and very effective.
studies have yet to prove that it has any LONG term effects of them. at least on Northern birds. I believe nature has given us it's own natural studies on that in the Southern bird's as they have been eating chili peppers and pooping out the seeds for, well since the beginning of time. that doesn't mean it's the same for all birds. and while I would rather not feed my squirrels bird food I don't want to hurt my birds and possibly future generations of birds feeding them spicy seeds. And the squirrels in my yard actually like spicy food... I didn't want them in my bird feeders in my trees so sprayed my trees with hot sauce didn't faize them. so thought it was just a bad idea, so tossed out some spicy roasted chickpeas that I had over roasted.. ate them up like they were nothing!
@@punkyroo Crap. Wasted my money. I can't find the other video. Did this idea work? Just spray it with Pam. Lots it it. Just buy a can exclusive for the bird pole
I've tried that in the past and it requires constant re-application. The sheet metal is enough to discourage them.
I've used lgenerous doses of cayenne pepper and habanero sauce, and the squirrels considered both to be appetizers. But the birds WERE deterred.
Good idea.Use an old dollhouse. That's what I am doing.
Very cool! :)
Honey, you blither. Get to the point quickly and talk about what's important.
This is a vlog. Talking is kinda the point. ;)
Did it work?
Not a single squirrel has made it up. They dont even try anymore! :D
Look at those!
'
next time try put a big /\ on the top +...
squirrel will never catch the top pole
Why doesn't the slinky work?
Two reasons: 1) It quickly gets stretched out and no longer bouncy... 2) the squirrels quickly learn how to hang onto and climb it.
@@punkyroo Crap. Wasted my money. I can't find the other video. Did this idea work? I'm wanting to attract crows to my yard in hopes that the cats will piss them off and the crows will drive the cats off my yard but the squirrels get the almonds and walnuts before the crows figure out they are there.
1:50 Scary right there !
Nice!
Could you help me and my channel out?
1) Use my Amazon Affiliate link: amzn.to/2wwW1Ao
2) SHARE THIS VIDEO!!! :)
3) Buy my sci-fi novel: amzn.to/2ESvQdc
My pole is up now!
Mine is too!
@@punkyroo :)
Look into using sono tubes instead of burying the post in the ground. Concrete 2ft in the ground and 1-2ft above ground covering the post will help you alot.
hands on
Great ideas, I really love the info you shared, I got quite an education, I had no idea they jumped that high! 😕I'm making this, as soon as I get the materials. I'm going to put a small Bird Bath on the top & I'm definitely cementing the post in the ground, lol😊. Please keep your hand out of the camera👋🏾 😊📸. I can't get a good picture without your hand in it. ❤️
Thanks for the kind words and suggestion! Best of luck to you in your own build. I like the idea of the bird bath. :)
Please don't get rid of those beautiful majestic trees! This comment is a year late so I hope you haven't cut down my trees.
I used round stove pipe, never had
a problem.
Perfect!
Hi Allen, I'm just trying to get more ides..what is a stove pipe?
Great job Punky Rooster!!!
Nice
Squirrels in my yard can jump over the metal
I like this video. I put it on when I need to fall asleep
That looks like a good design for a 10 foot treated wood 4x4. I believe I would get a large and long PVC pipe that can slide loosely down over the 4x4 converted into the ground.
Definitely give it a try!
Are you familiar with with Mark Rober? He is a mechanical engineer who used to work for NASA. Big channel, million plus subscribers. He took on the squirrels and lost.
LOL! Well, I have apparently one-upped a NASA engineer. :D Still not a single squirrel has made it to my feeders.
@@punkyroo Ha,ha, Glad you found a way to win. Squirrels are masters at fouling up any plan a human has.
Ask my garage, and my other half, the battle is still ongoing.
I need to find away to keep them out of my pear tree and my garden
if you are by any chance a Radical Feminist - does your Squirrel Excluding bird feeder qualify you as a SERF ??
I would have thought a video on squirrel proofing bird feeders would be boring. Goes to show you never can tell.
Why does this feel so weird
Are you scared of birds?
Boobalicious !!!!!!!
Squirrels are awesome! Help me also.
So much complicated. Just stick PVC pipe 100 mm in diameter.
Great explanation but no demonstration.😶
Filthy little claws 🤣🤣🙌
Nice *)-* *)-* !!!!!!!! 😋
azeleapark, look at bird bath
almost a year now, Im guessing that it didnt work for raccoons, as they are probably heavy enough to tip over the post? I recently made some squirrel cones for my shepherds hooks, which worked great, a raccoon tried to push past it but failed.
Nope! Raccoons have not been an issue at all! They cant climb the post with the sheet metal in place.
@@punkyroo and the bears you mentioned??
Oh brother!
I would totally feed the raccoons instead
