The real reason why SRAM moved to a 29mm spindle is the same reason why Shimano is on a 24mm spindle instead of a 25mm spindle. Standard 680x bearing IDs come in 5mm increments. Using 29mm and 24mm spindles means you can place a Delrin tophat in between…that prevents galling between the metal spindles and hardened steel bearing races.

Thanks! With the newer T47 x 86.5 I have found that the older PF30 spindles are too short. You have to have one of the newer DUB spindles for that build.
This one - that one, the road crank, the mountain bike crank. Mixing them up and moving them around! I feel like I've been watching one of those street scammers with 3 cups and guess which one has the ball under.
Since the ends of the spindles are the same between dub and pf30, am I right in understanding that you could change a pf30 spindle to a dub one and it would fit both crank arms? In the video you show that the spindle ends are the same and use a dub non drive side crank arm with a pf30 drive side crank. I have an old pf30 crank set and hoped to put it on my DH bike. For that I need the right spindle length (researching that now) and the dub width.
The issue with DUB is that the Nondriveside Arm is bonded permanently to the DUB spindle. The only company I know that offered it was stages but their splines are clocked differently so you have to use their crank arm with the spindle and now they are out of business. GXP was bad, for engineering reasons (floating driveside bearing, no way to preload the bearings). BB30 was even worse and has rightfully died a long time ago. PF30 wasn't quite as bad but had tiny bearings so ate those for fun. DUB tried to solve that problem by shaving 1mm off the diameter, so basically the same and almost as bad. In summary bad, badder, not as bad, not as bad. Ultimately, avoid. Sram is doing some excellent things, in mtb and road, but cranks aren't one of them. Also when you say 'bottom bracket', in reference to the frame, then you should say 'bottom bracket shell'.
Hi BC, thanks for this awesome tutoriell! A additional question about running a modern Quarq Dzero Dub Powermeter with a Sram red 11speed etap BB30/386 crank (8bolt): I heard Sram says officially that "its not compatible. it would fit but the chainring(s) would be ca.1.5mm offset". My questions: 1. is this correct? 2. If it's correct, what is the reason for this? (is the dub spindle 3mm shorter or longer? - I have no other explanation)? 3. What is yout thought on this combination? Thank you very much!!
I am sorry for the delay, just getting back into TH-cam after taking a break. The DUB spindle is every so slightly wider than the older 30mm Sram spindles. I had a wider than normal T47 86.5mm BB (85.5mm is normal) on my titanium bike and I could run the dub cranks but not the 30mm cranks because they were too narrow. So putting the older Quarq on there will work. Just need to adjust your front derailleur properly. 1.5mm is nothing when it comes to front derailleur adjustment. If you are running 1x then it will not be an issue. Did you try it?
Hi thanks for the video!! Do you know if the 8-bolt pattern used with powermeter is the same between GXP cranks and Dub cranks? I mean, a modern powermeter spider named for Dub cranks, with the 8-bolt pattern would fit in a GXP crank? Thanks!! Best,
Old video so u might not see this but does anyone know if I can fit the raceface aeffect r crank arms only onto my bike which is using all sram eagle nx crankset or would I have to change the bottom bracket from the dub 1
Do you mean the Shimano spiders? Or do you mean with the Shimano Bottom Brackets? If it is 8 speed, you just need chainrings that will work with 8 speed chains.
I'm trying to downsize the cranks on my snow bike. It's Dub with 76.5 CL and 100mm BB. Having a hard time finding what I need to drop the 175's to 165s..... How do you find the sizing without scrolling thru countless adverts?
It is always hard finding something like this due to not many people reselling them. Did you ever find one? I could possibly order you one if you need it since I have started a bike brand now, I have access to SRAM components.
GXP spindle is 22mm on the non drive side so it will not work with the Shimano BB. The drive side is 24mm and will work with the drive side Shimano BB but the non drive side, you need a GXP BB or an adapter sleeve that goes on the GXP 22mm spindle to make it 24mm.
@@BlackWaterCyclist I have seen that video but that crank and arm has an bolt. I mean the newer press fit. I have an XX1 and a GX crankset but want to take the arms out and swap them. Is that possible ?
The DUB Crank is compatible with your frame but you will need to change your Bottom Bracket to a DUB Bottom Bracket. What frame do you have? I could point you in the right direction of what Bottom Bracket you need.
Hi, I have a question and I'll be so glad to help so my case is I have a Sram truvativ descendent cranks with BB30 PF30 spindle but my new frame is internal threads standard wich means a normal DUB it's not working because it is 28.99mm how can I fit my BB30 spindle on it?
You can actually remove the plastic dust shield from the dub bottom bracket and it will fit a 30mm spindle. Your spindle may not be long enough but you can always pop the dub dust covers back in.
This was a long time ago and I apologize for the delay. Just getting back into TH-cam after taking a year off. That is a great question. I have actually run AXS front derailleurs with an 11 speed chainring and chain and it shifted great. Did you ever try it?
That is correct. You may have to add a few spacers if you have the newer Transmission crank which is the same width as the CL55 dub mtb cranks. Transmission/CL55 cranks have a 6mm wider spindle so you would need 3mm spacer on each side.
So,,, SRAM BB30 has longer spindle than the original cannondale BB30? then can we fit SRAM BB30 road crank to BSA or BB386 frame if we have proper BB? One anoter question is, In case of 8 bolt patterns, can spider interchangable between GXP and SRAM DUB or BB30 crank?
Sorry for the delay on this. I am just getting back to TH-cam. Yes as long as you have the proper BB then it should work. The 8 bolt pattern is the same between all of them but the Dub spindle is about 1.5mm longer so if you put a Quarq or Spider that is 8 bolt off the older 30mm spindles onto the Dub, it will have your chainring sit outboard 1.5mm. Not the end of the world, especially if you are running 1x.
i used a SRAM XX1 with 30mm short spindle with threaded bottom bracket in my old Cannondale Super V900, i only had to find a threaded BB for 30 mm and also file the flat sides of the frame until it fitted. carbon crancks, short 30mm spindle, and less frame metal means i saved lots of weight. Also can run dual crown
That is awesome! I have seen people do this to be able to fit the older specialized S works cranks in regular 73mm BB threaded bikes. Glad you got it to work!
@@BlackWaterCyclist also you can use 83 mm wide spindle in 73 mm narrow old frames using spacers. old Rock Shox Boxxer used dust seals fit perfectly. i put Saint crancks in old frames. also the Saint BB has enought thread to reach the width needed. about 300 mm spindles, the are bottom brackets for threaded frames that has different bearings for that spindle diameter.
What about "DUB Boost", "DUB Wide" and "DUB SuperBoost +" spindle lenghts to address 52, 55 and 56.5mm chainlines. The spindles are etched with "DUB or DUB SL", "DUB Wide" and "DUB SB+" to I dentify them. I believe the "SL" stands for Standard Length" not "Super Light".
Great points here Mike. I guess I need to make an updated video. SL actually stands for Super Light. I have had both a Force Dub crank regular width and a Red Dub Regular width and the Red had SL on it and the Force did not.
There are so many variables here. Did you get it to work? With a shimano 24mm spindle it is easy to use an adapter but with GXP, you have to have the non drive side at just the right location bc it uses a 22mm Internal bearing and has to be placed in just the right location.
Hello, Do know if SRAM BB30 (30mm) spindle like Stages D Spindle would work with Cannondale SL or Cannondale One cranks? In short are SRAM and Cannondale BB30 spindles interchangable if they are correct length?
I am sorry, I am just getting back into TH-cam. You are right that the spindle interface is the same between Cdale and Stages but the problem with stages is that they have clocked the interface differently so you have to use their non driveside crank arm. If you put a regular crank arm on it, you will have one arm at 12 o clock and the other at like 2 o clock.
Hi and thanks for all the explanation. I kindly ask you an opinion regarding 2022 Spark. Do you think is it possible to put the Xx1 Crankset with Quarq (dub standard) on the new Spark with Dub wide, working with spacer and maintaining 55 mm chainline? Thanks in advance! It will save me to buy a new 8 bold crank dub wide very hard to find.
The spindle might be wide enough for the BB but the crank arms may not have enough bend in them to be wide enough to clear the chainstays. That would be my concern.
Hi, my PM Dfour91 died and I need a new one. I would go for AXS Dfour which looks familiar with mine crank arms I used by now on Dfour91. My questions is do they fit correctly? Axs D4 spider and crank arms with spindle from my d491? Thank you in advance! Regards Uros
@@BlackWaterCyclist thanks, but my question is oposite so older crank arms from DFour91 (2019) and a new DFour AXS DUB spider. It looks suitable but I'm not sure exactly?
@@uroscernigoj5961 Yes, that will work as well. They are both interchangeable as long as they are 8 bolt so you can go from the DUB crank arms to the older Dfour91 30mm Spindle crankarms.
Yes they can, they use the same spline interface. You cannot mix and match crank arms though because the Cannondale is clocked differently than the SRAM so one crank would be at 12 o clock and the other at 5 o clock.
Hi @black water cyclist. The video was great. I have an older sram power meter where the battery cap has cracked and has also stopped working. It's from a 2009 Fuji D-6 bike. Can I buy a new poser meter spider to replace what I have? Let me know if you need more info.
Hi Mike, the issue you may have is that yours is 3 bolt and all the newer Quarq D Zero power meters are 8 bolt. If you could find an older lightly used Quarq Elsa or Riken (both 3 bolt) then you would be good to go. Quarq claims you can't swap between arm lengths with the older Elsa/Riken or it will read higher or lower depending on which way you move on the arm length but honestly it will not be much of a difference. A few second hand companies make 3 bolt power meters like Xcadey or Power2Max that you could swap it with. Another option is to find a right side 8 bolt and a D Zero power meter but that will be hard to come by in your exact length. I hope that helps.
Unfortunately the dub spindles are all pressed and bonded on the non drive side crank arm. I've taken a 30mm spindle from race face and had it faced down to 28.99mm and it worked great with the dub bottom bracket.
@@MarcO-hl5mh I took the 30mm spindle and machined it down to 28.99mm which is what the dub is. You are correct, the 30mm spindle will not fit in a dub bb.
@@BlackWaterCyclist I think there is an option to have a dub spindle with bb30 and pf30 cranks, you can set the STAGE G spindle on them. I'm going to buy the Stage G spindle for my Easton EC90SL crankset to use BSADUB BB instead the BSA30.
@@francescocostantini5926 Correct, you cannot take the spindle from a DUB and put it on an older crank arm and vise versa. I have had SRAM alloy spindles for years with no issues. The original PF30 spindles that were aluminum would have issues since they connect directly to the steel races of the bearings and would wear and cause clicking or creaking. The newer Dub are better because they use a plastic sleeve similar to shimano bearings so they do not have the wear like previous PF30 cranks. Shimano has had more crankarm issues than SRAM over the years. I would say SRAM have been more reliable than Shimano in the crankset arena though that is not the case in most parts with SRAM vs Shimano.
@@BlackWaterCyclist most of the spindles in the video already show some small amounts of wear. For people that ride a lot, it happens way too soon regardless of the amount of maintenance. Thats my experience and the same for many people I know that ride XC.
You can shim 24mm spindles on the axle. GXP is obviously a different animal. Sometimes the shim for the BB is too thick and they do not offer thinner ones and you need to shim on the axle. On a brand new Scott Spark 2022 with XT 24mm spindle cranks, they had 2 shims on the axles, stock from the factory.

Sorry they did not have DUB wide when I made this video or at least it was very new. Dub Wide for road is a total of 5mm wider spindle. Everything else is the same. SO you have a 5mm wider Q factor and it moves the Front Derailleur wider by 2.5mm to give more room for larger tires. Wide for MTB does the same, just makes the spindle wider for more tire/chainstay/chainring clearance.
It is frustrating when we have so many different standards. I am not sure if the blame can all be put on SRAM since they were breaking into a market that Shimano dominated for so long. There may have been patents that SRAM was trying to work around so they wouldn't have to pay royalties to Shimano.
DUB is superfluous and unnecessary as the 30mm already exists, already has bottom brackets that exist and works just fine. I have two bikes with threaded English 30mm bottom brackets and there is nothing wrong with them. SRAM basically created a new size with all the complications that it creates for no apparent reason. The 'bigger bearing' claim isn't real. Just SRAM being SRAM, IMO.
Most 30mm bb’s have the cranks straight onto the races of the bb bearing, sram dubs are a 30mm Id bearings but with a plastic sleeve isolating the crank from the bearing. This will prevent galling on the axle. 30mm has its issues depending on the frames bb standard, especially bb86 which is why most have to use double row bearings to try and extend their life.
......Sooo...I have Sram red cranks, PF-30 spindle, long version, 172.5mm. 53/39,Wanted 165mm. Cranks. Got my hands on a set. Had to send them back...came with the short spindle. No one knows what the heck i am talking about because Sram didnt even have enough courtesy for people to put a different model number on the shorter-or-longer spindle, they both say PF-30. So it would seem no one on planet earth has a long spindle, Sram red 165mm 53/39 crankset, PF-30 OR GXP, new or used, for sale, so that i can match the rest of the components on my bike. Oh, and if my A1 derailleur goes bad, they want $800. It would seem Shimano arent the only greedy, inconsiderate ones, after all.(Hammerhead)
Rubbish presentation you just wave bottom brackets around. You need to lay parts out and progress from one to another explaining each in turn. Pity because I want this summary. PS My Sram is 5 hole which you don’t cover at all.
Presentation is good and educational and the topic mainly focuses on SPINDLES and their corresponding BB, how tf does having 5 bolt crank relate to this topic

@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for your quick response, you are awesome I am gonna try this out. Cheers
You are a real expert.
Do you happen to know if you can use SRAM Force AXS ETap front derailleur with compact Campy Ultra-torque crankset?
This was a long time ago and I apologize for the delay. Just getting back into TH-cam after taking a year off. That is a great question. I have actually run AXS front derailleurs with an 11 speed chainring and chain and it shifted great. Did you ever try it?
So this being said, could I swap any dub MTB crankset out with another no issues? No BB swap? I’m assuming the answer is yes
Do you have a video on how to replace spindles?
Sorry for the delay, just getting back into TH-cam. Did you find the video? If not, here it is. th-cam.com/video/zqWmQNywos4/w-d-xo.html
I currently use a sram gxp crank and Shimano bb52 and there's a wobble I think there's no spacers in there
I bought a Gxp crankset I’m taking out my bb30 crankset can I use my gxp crankset with my bb30 bottom bracket if use a bb30 adapter?
There are so many variables here. Did you get it to work? With a shimano 24mm spindle it is easy to use an adapter but with GXP, you have to have the non drive side at just the right location bc it uses a 22mm Internal bearing and has to be placed in just the right location.
Hello,
Do know if SRAM BB30 (30mm) spindle like Stages D Spindle would work with Cannondale SL or Cannondale One cranks? In short are SRAM and Cannondale BB30 spindles interchangable if they are correct length?
I am sorry, I am just getting back into TH-cam. You are right that the spindle interface is the same between Cdale and Stages but the problem with stages is that they have clocked the interface differently so you have to use their non driveside crank arm. If you put a regular crank arm on it, you will have one arm at 12 o clock and the other at like 2 o clock.
clear as mud explanation shew! but thank you.
Haha, your statement is very accurate.
I have bought an X01 Eagle crankset, what bb do I need to buy if I have 2022 lunar Sram dub GX cranks?
It is a DUB spindle so you would need the DUB bottom bracket that fits your frame. What frame is it?
Can we use Sram crank arm with shimano chainring?
I dont think so. They have different mounting systems.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Ciao and thanks for your prompt reply! On Monday I will finally check with my mechanic and I let you know;)
Hi,
my PM Dfour91 died and I need a new one. I would go for AXS Dfour which looks familiar with mine crank arms I used by now on Dfour91.
My questions is do they fit correctly? Axs D4 spider and crank arms with spindle from my d491?
Thank you in advance!
Regards
Uros
Yes as long as it is the 8 bolt spider design it will fit perfectly on the DUB Spindle version.
So if I have a bb30 pf and want to switch to dub 28.99 I would need a new bottom bracket?
Yes you would or some sort of adapters which I am sure are out there but I have not seen them.
Very nice video!helpful for me!and...can cannondale bb30 spindles be used on sram crankset? They look the same.
Yes they can, they use the same spline interface. You cannot mix and match crank arms though because the Cannondale is clocked differently than the SRAM so one crank would be at 12 o clock and the other at 5 o clock.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Cool!Thanks!
I have bought an X01 Eagle crankset, what bb do I need to buy if I have 2022 lunar Sram dub GX cranks?
Can you tell me how Long is the treds on bb on non drive side?
You mean the threads on the Bottom Bracket itself? You mean the DUB bottom bracket? I can measure later for you.
Really useful, thank you. I wonder if you can swap the dub spindle of a dub crankset by an PF30 and vice versa.
Unfortunately the dub spindles are all pressed and bonded on the non drive side crank arm. I've taken a 30mm spindle from race face and had it faced down to 28.99mm and it worked great with the dub bottom bracket.
@@BlackWaterCyclist You meant that you took a bb30 race face spindle to be placed on a pf30 and/or bb30 sram crankset and it worked, didn't you?
@@BlackWaterCyclist How can a 30mm spindle works with a dub BB? It is thicker than the dub BB, isn't it?
@@MarcO-hl5mh I took the 30mm spindle and machined it down to 28.99mm which is what the dub is. You are correct, the 30mm spindle will not fit in a dub bb.
@@BlackWaterCyclist I think there is an option to have a dub spindle with bb30 and pf30 cranks, you can set the STAGE G spindle on them. I'm going to buy the Stage G spindle for my Easton EC90SL crankset to use BSADUB BB instead the BSA30.
Do u guys know if i can take apart in 3 Pieces the sram dub ones?
You cannot. The Spindle is bonded to the non drive side arm.
@@BlackWaterCyclistdamn
@@BlackWaterCyclist so if It doesn't fit i cant change the spindle to the old One?
@@francescocostantini5926 Correct, you cannot take the spindle from a DUB and put it on an older crank arm and vise versa. It looks like Leonardi makes a dub spindle for their cranks that has the same 30mm interface as the older Sram 30mm spindle cranks but this appears to be for MTB. northwestbicycle.com/products/leonardi-capo-crank-axle-dub-crank-separate-b-ln6050?currency=USD&variant=40061147545705&stkn=398fa69d1b59&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwv-2pBhB-EiwAtsQZFGuWCDMD0vrl09GfBnhrjQN3x3Mm7qHOWqYOIguX0cVU519366fwxhoC4ygQAvD_BwE
@@BlackWaterCyclist ok thank u very much anyways
Aluminum spindle is sooner or later going to wear and be trash. Switching to shimano because of this
I have had SRAM alloy spindles for years with no issues.
Now, if only I could make sense of boost, super boost, and super boost+.
Ditto. Good luck to both of us.
Haha, yeah I need to make a video on that.
that just means the front chainline is pushed further and further to the right due to boost wheel pushing the cassette to the right
sooo many proprietary "standards" - it's mighty good T47 is here
you dont shim a gxp crankset or any 24mm crankset on the axle! shim is done on the bb.

Hi please help. I purchased a Force 22 BB30 Is it possible to fit to a BSA 68mm shell?
pls
add dub wide
Sorry they did not have DUB wide when I made this video or at least it was very new. Dub Wide for road is a total of 5mm wider spindle. Everything else is the same. SO you have a 5mm wider Q factor and it moves the Front Derailleur wider by 2.5mm to give more room for larger tires. Wide for MTB does the same, just makes the spindle wider for more tire/chainstay/chainring clearance.
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thank you for the explanation....
But it is a big deal when selecting replacement BB because the bearings are 5mm further apart.
I miss when there was just one standard. SRAM came and screwed everything up.
I do not like GXP. I do not like Sram's HRD (Hydraulic Road Brakes)
I do very mike like their eTap/AXS two button shifters.
......Sooo...I have Sram red cranks, PF-30 spindle, long version, 172.5mm.
You mean your BCD is 5 bolt? This was focused on the crank arms and their spindles. Maybe I should make a video explaining the BCD spiders of Sram?
Presentation is good and educational and the topic mainly focuses on SPINDLES and their corresponding BB, how tf does having 5 bolt crank relate to this topic
Worst crankset ever!
