  • Aside from gnarly mountain bike trails, all terrain bikes (ATBs) are bikes built to handle everything from pavement to gravel to tame singletrack. They're the kind of bike you can throw a leg over and spend a whole day running errands, exploring backroads and doing whatever the heck you want. While the term ATB was coined decades ago, it's seeing a resurgence in the last couple years as a schism appears in the gravel world with racing on one side and do-it-all bikes on the other.
    In this video, I make some changes to my Salsa Mukluk fat bike to turn it into an all-terrain, mile crunching machine and then take it on a first ride to see how I like it.

    On my fat bike to 29er plus conversion I run a Maxxis Ikon 2.6 in the rear on a 45i Scraper rim. I was concerned it would give a wonky profile but it's fine and rolls pretty fast. It might be what you're looking for.

    Nice one. I got a REEB Donkadonk and it’s so great. Currently it has a 30t chainring and 11-48 cassette. I’m planning on munching some miles with it on various roads this summer, and I’m considering a manual 2x, using the NSB 2x spider for my GX cranks. I was also considering taking out the 11t cog and spacing the cassette outboard a bit to be able to clear even wider tires in the 177mm spacing without chain rub on the tire. We’ll see.

    Fun conversion. I've swapped Surly Extraterrestrials onto numerous bikes 29+/fat bikes. They're 2.6" wide on i45 rims, and they're pretty decent tires, but my favorite fast rolling 29x2.6 is the Schwalbe Johnny Watts. It's supposedly designed for ebikes, but they make great all rounders if set up tubeless (if tubed they're super stiff). Balding knards are a great fast tire too. My dad rides a Jones SWB set up as a 29er with the Johnny Watts, and the bike is a freaking rocket. Off road it's competent but the truss fork is brutally stiff in chunk. The Jones loop bar shines more on that bike than any other I've ridden (Surly ECR, Pugsley, Tumbleweed Prospector) and definitely feels part of the Jones system, but when setup as Jeff Jones suggests with the controls far forward the other bikes have a good approximation.

      Great input, I’ve never even seen that tire but it looks perfect for this use case.

    You might check out Vittoria Mezcal or Maxxis Ikon, they're both a fast rolling XC tire. Both are very similar in looks with low profile and directional knobs.

    I have been riding a Specialized Chisel on road and to putt around and I find myself spinning it out a lot. It is 1x12, my other bikes are still 2x10 and seem more versatile for that sort of riding. I like the 1x on mtb trails though. Maybe a bigger front chainring....

    Kenda booster pro 29x2.6 by far the fastet and best gravel tire i have ever used......wtb ranger 29x3x0 also a wunderfull tire and more heavy duty then the booster. I run booster pro on my cutthroat and rangers/xr2/chronicle on my mulkluk and fargo....by the way dig your riding and building style :-)

    Do you think a 26x5” or 4.75” tire would fit in the rear with the 2x? Thinking of going that direction on my fat bike but the 1x chain seems close to the tire.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know the bike it came off was running 26x4.5” tires so a 4.75-4.8” might clear but I doubt a 5” would.

    May I ask what inner and outer rim width are you using for your 29+ with 3.0 tire width? I'm planning to do the same for a 27.5 diameter wheelset. Thank you in advance!

      The inner rim width is 40 in the rear, 45 in the front. Either size would work great though!

    If you want to buy another fat bike 2x crankset, let me know, I have a FSA comet 36/22 crankset in like new condition. I bought it for a build a while ago, but ended up finding a deal on a 1x setup.

      I’m definitely a fan of 1x on mountain bikes, but once you need something for a lot of road/gravel or loaded riding, a 2x makes way more sense.
