The Only Thing You Need To Learn How To Script

- You only need that one thing I mentioned to learn how to script. You'll just have to take my word for it. Best of luck on learning Roblox Studio and in your journey as a Roblox Developer.
As always, keep leveling up, stay safe, and I'll see you when I see you, peace.
Hey as a 9 year veteran on Roblox and a scripter on the platform, I would say learn the basics to programming like functions, variables, arrays, dictionaries, and basic math. These components will allow you to read any documentation on Roblox developer forum explaining all of the APIs like data saving and you will be able to understand the code as well as build onto it.
This is definitely true, being able to get info from the Dev Forum is really a life saver.
Also thanks for taking the time to comment :]
Thanks for letting me know dude
I though bro was 9 years old 😂

animation: become a film buff / cinephile
scripting: practicing and morphine / studying
building: get a degree in architecture
modelling: be good at blender
VFX artists: watch studio ufotable animes
SFX artists: be a parrot
GFX: photoshop
That what it really feels like tryna learn these skills right? jaja
Thanks for the comment :]
Ufotable is real, EA sfx are just🤤
vfx for me was just ore-creation for this game called "REx:R". Every ore in the game is basically made of particles & it really helped me get off the ground with vfx because there's curators and a community that can help
animation is so real ngl
i agree with building
A few years back when I wanted to learn Roblox scripting I ended up buying a copy of this book and it was fantastic. Thanks for recommending this book to a larger audience, it deserves more recognition!
It definitely deserves more recognition right? Also thanks for the comment :]
But how much dose it cost?
@@RubinNexhipi Depends where youre buying it, i found it for around 16 bucks on amazon.
Me too but I didn't get it buying it, I got it for christmas.
@@RubinNexhipi its like $4-$5 at walmart and im sure if you find a used one you can probably almost get it for free
This is a such a well edited video for such a small channel, keep up the passion king, you'll make it one day, i believe in you bro, and im proud of you
I'm really impressed with the quality of your videos! Thanks for the tips. Hope you grow your channel and keep it up! :)
Thanks for the positive words I really appreciate it. Also thanks for the comment :]
I taught myself using the roblox docs website, I didn’t need video tutorials or a book. I learned how to code pretty well in about 3 months with this too.
Well, that’s one way to do it :]
can you tell me more about what the doc website is and where i can find it?
@@hachi-mon8717 you got google you dont gotta wait weeks for youtube commenters to tell you ts 😭🙏
Thanks for telling about this book! I tried scripting a little bit, but I felt like I couldn't understand it good enough.
I wish your content to get more recognition!
Aye best of luck on your scripting journey and thanks for the positive words. Also thanks for the comment :]
Yoo, should I get the updated version of the book?@@iamLudius
Have you been trying to learn still? If so how’s it going now
@@oscaar9003 It's going pretty good, I've done some progress. I'd say I can make a little project, but I still need to learn about more complicated stuff.
I bought the book, and even though I'm already an "advanced" scripter, I wanted to see it as it could inspire my friends. It's brilliant, even after 5 years of scripting, this book can still solidify my expertise and reinforce some other things. Appreciate it
Yup, it’s pretty useful. Also thanks for the comment :]
@@iamLudius No problem. Also keep up the content, it's amazing!
can I please have your discord I need your help with scripting
Yet another legendary video from the one and only Ludius! I'm waiting for the day the algorithm decides to recommend your videos to people.
Damn bro, I'm waiting for that day too. As always thanks for you comment, I really do appreciate it and it really does help me :]

Hey currently on Chapter 4 Functions of the book. Even tho am not a book guy the guide teached me more than any other video i've ever watched on scripting. Thanks for recommanding that book !

AGREED THE DEV KINGS PLAYLISTS ARE THE BEST! Sadly his new videos are trash..
Bro didn’t pull his punches jajajajaja
what I did after watching the first couple tutorials is just figuring out which methods/things I need, to make what I intend to do and if you just experiment from there u WILL learn fast. To learn you just gotta do it. (And instead of copying word for word from other scripts just go through the script and really make sure you understand what it does and what methods they use.. from on there you can make the script without copying word for word)
I agree, after learning the basics just start seeking experience and start observing how others do their things. Thanks for the comment :]
I also did the watch and replicate for months on end and it gave me a very solid basis for further scripting
Yeah it's a very good way to learn I'm not gonna deny it.
Also thanks for the comment :]
Hey Ludius, I noticed theres a new version of the book by the same person that's more up to date. Would you recommend that one over the one showed in the video?
Yeah, the updated newer one should be better
Nice pfp, tuxe

great and smooth explanation keep up the good work!
I'm glad you liked the video. I'll will definitely keep up the good work :}
Also thanks for taking the time to comment, it really helps the channel!

this book taught me how to script in lua, I was a builder (a pretty sucky one at that) until i got this book. 0 real tutorials before the book, and now I can actually script. Still don't really udnerstand the x in pairs thing, but it's a great book
Thanks a lot for your great guidelines it helped a lot
you already know it's going to be a fire video when Ludius says "Lemme tell you a quick story"
(In all seriousness I am so glad to have a found someone on hear who explains everything as quickly and efficiently as you do, I really hope the Algorithm starts pushing out more of your vids soon)
Jajajajaja, "lemme tell you a quick story" gonna be iconic at some point. Also we're growing more and more every single week. We gonna make it, and your comment really helps with that so thanks a lot for the comment!
I actually got the book but i ripped the pages of it in a fit of rage. Never thought 2 year old actions could get back to you.
i learned luau entirely from making edits of server-sided scripts such as Blind Reaper and figuring out what things do, how things work, and how to make it do what i want it to do, and eventually it got me to where i am now
Dang, that’s a very unique way to learn :]
I loved this video because it was useful and helpful for me, So....I subscribed.
And thanks for everything..
I love the dev king I followed dev king he is who I personally would recommend no matter the date unless it frost work its a good base
bought the book and watched plenty tutorials. learned how to do a lot in less than a week!
i remember seeing this book and i was considering to buy it but skimmed through it and decided not to. i really recommend this book, but if you want to take the longer easier path, learn off from free models and the devforum like i have done for 5 years
Nice comment, yeah I guess depending on the person watching a videos could be better initially. Thanks for the comment :]
Making small and small systems is the best way to go you wont get anywhere without reading and searching and trying nothing starts easy
I actually read this book like 2 years ago and it did help me a lot lol
It is very useful
a great playlist that helped me start to code was by CovertCode. For some reason he was the only one that had me understanding. A big part in learning is also experience. Try to do things in roblox studio without copying a playlist, make a challenge for yourself.
Oh, I'll take a look at the playlist later. Thanks for the comment :]
Something I noticed was that the pace of the video kept changing. The information is great. Stay strong 💪
Yeah, unfortunately I didn't pace the speech correctly this time...
Also thanks for the comment :]
of course! keep going and improving, It's great so far, but we can always improve! :D I appreciated the "professional" tip of buying that book, that's pretty relevant information!@@iamLudius
I purchased an updated edition of the Heath Haskins book hoping that i would gain some insight on how I could understand scripting more (because I've been struggling to understand the FUNDAMENTALS of scripting for over 2 years as of now) but the book doesn't even do that for me unfortunately.
also, a very good way to assist you in learning how to script is by looking at other people's code and trying to understand and figure out what it is doing
Yup, I 100% agree, but you gotta know how to do the basics first. Anyways, thanks for the comment :]
I bought this book years ago and never touched it but I found it again and I’m gonna use it 😭😭
That book solidified my base and taugh5 me more
I recommend everyone to check out if their local library has the Heath Haskins book, was able to grab a copy of it today :)
As a small roblox dev making a game called "Untitled Crossroads Games" after I made the game I found out that I had a scripting type of power, for all those roblox noobs out there, practice always makes perfect, so please practice, most small devs get lazy at practicing.
Spoken like true developer :]
the problem about making games is not only scripting is enough sadly I only mastered scripting thus I cant make a good game wish I could learn animating so I can actually make a game
I'm litteraly becoming a roblox game maker machine. Learning scripting, building in roblox and modeling in blender, VFX and sounds. I swear-
seems pretty solid, ima see if i can get a copy if its not too $$
I remember when I went to a B&N I saw this book and I got it. I hadn't touched in a while, but this video reminded me that it was literally on my desk. Maybe I should try scripting?
I mean if you’re already advanced in another developer skill then focus on the one you’re already experienced in. Otherwise, if you feel like scripting is more appealing to you then go with scripting. In either case it really won’t hurt trying it out and experimenting. Also, thanks for the comment I really appreciate it :]
imagine taking months to learn scripting. i simply learnt basics and now when i have problem (mostly advanced problems) i got in forums or docs and get my answer and then i learn or ask in the roblox studio community
scripting is as easy as reading an baby tale, the hard part is to remember and understand
Hey so I was looking into getting back into game development seriously with Roblox and I was taking a look at this book on Amazon, and I was wondering if there are any outdated scripts or significant errors in the book?
You may or may not have just saved my life.
Woah, hope you’re doing well man and best of luck in life :]
wow this acually helped me so much! (and supprisingly i already have this book for some reason lol)
Awesome, you gonna level up for real when you read that book.
Also thanks for the comment :]
My general problem with scripting is the fact that shortened commands or whatever you call it are hard to understand. I can only make a NPC walk to a part, dialogchoice, or actual dialog (using label text guis) and the rest confuse me as they just don't fit together to make a sentence. But i am slowly learning.
I'm glad you say that, I literally had the book sitting on my desk
Awesome, now time to read it! Also thanks for the comment :]
I use the dev form, Roblox docs, and other people scripts and just reading them. I also create small projects to learn and practice my scripting skills, it seems to help a lot. Somehow all of this led to me getting 5 million visits. Small developer still.
This is also a very good way to learn. Btw, thanks for the comment :]
I learned a lot from dev forum and roblox docs as well.
I learned scripting from just making different games over and over again and its more fun but it takes more time than learning from tutorials or books.
Interesting way of learning, if you did that without having a scripting base I'd be actually surprised. Anyways, keep leveling up and best of luck in your journey!
Also thanks for the comment :]
Same, i made like 300 games
When I already had the scripting foundation every new game made me learn more for the next
Honestly, that is kind of what I did. I would make games and then if I ran into an issue I would look out how other people tackled the problem and use their scripting methods into a blend of mine.
I’m guessing the version you showed in the video is better but just in case there is an updated version is that one worth getting over the older one ?
I think so BC everyone is using it and I don't think Roblox code as updated just the functions and a couple stuff being implemented to be easier and smoother
Ludius: wanna know how to script?
also ludios: Buy a book instead of me teaching you
he did his job
Heath Haskins book is actually really good as I own it, after I lost interest in developing I gave it to a friend who is now a great scripter!
Yeah, it's actually a great book! Are you trying to come back to game development tho? Just curious since you are watching a development tutorial jaja
Anyways, thanks for the comment :]
probably, and i find this really cool! Thanks bro for a such a graet vid@@iamLudius
thanks for the video, i'll be sure to check out the book
Thank YOU for the comment :]
Hey @ludius! I want to buy the book, but there is a new version, which one should i buy? Thanks.
hello, i found the same exact book but it says updated edition, do you happen to know if it includes everything the old one does but like additional stuff or if its completely different than the original version?
there actually is an updated version of that book
Hey, i decided that i will buy the book but now in 2024, there are 2 copies a new updated version and another old one (the old one is the one you said in the video) So which book i get and also do i buy the book before TheDevKing tutorial or after it?
Lol I used Roblox studio for 6 years now and never felt like scripting but always wanted to so I guess I'm gonna give it a try
What i actually recommend is getting any long piece of code thats at least 1 thousand lines, and try and see what the code does. Try and copy some lines and put them into a diffrent script and see the outcome, and if it needs and variables added and stuff. Thats how i learned. I also (i dont recommend this) learned from hacking and cheating scripts.
yoo i actually have that book, the second i saw it on this video i ran to go get it
ive been coding for a few years and i felt like i didnt make much progress, but when i got that book it felt really simple and i started to understand how to do a lot
thedevking is also a very good scripting channel
Hmm, it seems quite a few people also had the book already, that's awesome! Make sure you read it entirely :]
Learned Lua in 3 months + scripting, 3d Modeling. Made around 148k Robux by doing Freelance and got heavily into Programming and learning other languages. Definitely worth the try.
hey, did you buy the book? beacause i want to but there are 2 editions and i dont know which one to get, and also how ddi you learn LUA?
@@batata.animation ight buy the newest one? The updated one its cheaper ngl.
i read the lua docs and then i could code tho i do not reccommended. I personally feel like lua is one of the easiest languages i've ever learned. if ur silly, learning luau/roblox sandbox stuff can be learned by copying code from the devforum and then evolving on it repeativley
Well, if you have previous experience in coding then any route is much faster since technically the hardest thing will be learning the sintaxis of the new language. Anyways, thanks for your interesting comment :]
I NEED TO CLARIFY
IS THAT UNDERTALE OSTS IN BACKGROUND
THIS BOOK IS THE REPRESENTATION OF MY HOPES AND DREAMS!!
How good is the book if they’re constantly changing removing adding new Variables to Roblox API?
i have that book. im gonna read it so thoroughly
Awesome, I bet you will level up a lot just by reading it. Best of luck on your journey and thanks for the comment :]
The same Author made a updated version in 2022.
Is the older one better or should i stick with the new one?
Hello i tried reading the book as a first timer and stopped because once it came to tables i stopped because the book was severely outdated and i watched a playlist didnt work because after watching it i still didnt knwo how to script so if you have any answers please help me on how to script
that "GET THE BOOK" really motivated my depresssed soul to do something productive haha
That was the goal jajajaja. Thanks for the comment :]
I'll buy it when I can, cause I have been TRYING to learn how to code cause I really wanna make fun projects and stupid games also just for fun. but most videos, sites, and anything else I came across seems lack luster in fully understanding the language
im doing that thing again where i spend 2 weeks trying to learn how to script (but then give up)
lets hope i dont give up this time
how are you doing with scripting rn? You got this, just practice your scripting, make simple stuff at first (changing properties, assigning variables, if-thens and loops, etc) and you’ll be able to script well before you know it :D

I decided not to sleep on it and get the book, it seems really good! Thanks for the advice, I will see how this goes for the next few months!
hows the progress?
I was bought this book a while ago and was going to use it. Now I need it and can't find it for the life of me!
2 questions:
1.The dev kings tutorials still good in 2023?
2.There's a newer version of the book should I buy that instead?
(Also great video)

1. Yes, TheDevKing tutorials are still incredibly good in 2023
2. Yes, it's probably better for you to get the newest version of the book

How is the book if you read it
hey. i've been scriping for 4 years already, and i know some basics stuff, like functoins, variables, can change properties of instances, use remoteEvents, etc. I've learned it mostly from free models and youtube tutorials. Should I still buy that book?
If you have the money to buy it I highly recommend you do. But it seems like you already have the basics down and what you need to do now is concentrate on making projects to get practical experience.
Thanks for the comment :]
Never understood how do you mash strings into a working and an actual script
I dunno why I'm getting this video since I don really wanna code, but you konw what? I'll save this video, maybe get this book when I get money
im trying everything currently, tutorials, playlists, the roblox documents but yet after i managed to learn some things i do not know what to do or how to apply these skills. I dont have much money for the book is there like a sorta of free digital version of it?
I don’t think so
should i get the updated edition or the edition you showed me
Searched up the book there is the one you showed and apparently the guy made a updated version imma just get the newer one cuz I know the basic basics but idk how people plug everything together I know variables and math and all that but it was from the game Lua learning but it didn’t teach me anything bout connect: and if do etc
I don't want to make games on Roblox anymore really, I want to learn to code and code in other game engines, like Godot (Roblox is kind of greedy). But when I did want to, I really only learned how to change properties of parts which was not very impressive, though I did buy that book (never read it) and it's sitting at my desk rn so might as well learn how to use roblox studio fully, thanks.
I just went to research the book after watching this video, but I realized that there was an updated version of the book by the same author. So, I wanted to ask, which one should I pick up?
I'd say go for the updated version, should be better since it's more updated
bit late to the video, just ordered the updated version 10 mins ago so hopefully it comes tomorrow!
