Hey as a 9 year veteran on Roblox and a scripter on the platform, I would say learn the basics to programming like functions, variables, arrays, dictionaries, and basic math. These components will allow you to read any documentation on Roblox developer forum explaining all of the APIs like data saving and you will be able to understand the code as well as build onto it.

To learn you just gotta do it. I'm a roblox scripter, builder, GFX artist and more and have been doing this for 6 years. Luckily, I only taught myself by watching youtube tutorials on very simple things like 'how to detect when a UI button has been clicked'. I started to understand the assignment after a while and knew some of the basics in roblox scripting. I kept teaching myself more things (sort of accidentally) and now I'm still progressing through my scripting journey.
Things like the roblox devhub also really helped with my journey.
I would definitely say to non-scripters that they need to learn the basics first like variables, functions etc.

I dont know if its valid but im a 2 week dev and already scripted flashligh, viewmodels(2), a gun , an axe, and really simple Ai, and a door. First of all dont use vids that tell you exactly what to do, use the forums and dont steal the code but look at the concept. Also you gotta make sure you have set goals. Also try to be veeery comfortable with the roblox UI. And lastly try to learn as many services as possible and how to use events. I was a unity dev and maybe some skills like math have transfered but in a little time you can do it too!

Also, there is an updated version of the book you all may prefer to get. This version was published in 18/2019. The updated one was published in 2022.
However, if the date isn't an issue for, you can also get the official "Coding with Roblox Lua" book. It's practical an easy to understand. It also gives examples and exercises to complete. There's also the official "Roblox Game Development" book Which you are meant to read after "Coding with Roblox Lua".
