      It's not so natural when homeless and illegals are setting fires.
      I know my comment might sound insincere, but I am filled with so much sadness, frustration and anger. All of this could've been prevented and should've never happened! The California Government doesn't care about its OWN people!

      Same. I only started watching Arvin a few weeks ago, but was very taken by his insights and perspectives on homes, not houses. Then I switched to YT and saw a live feed of a fire in LA that had started. The super scoopers were there as the fire grew to around 200 acres, circling to drop water despite the very high winds. I hoped Arvin and friends were ok, and watched in disbelief as the fires grew and grew. The scale of the devastation to people's property and lives is terrible, but Angelinos are resiliant, and can rebuild.

      Very sorry for all the loss.
      82,000 structures were destroyed or damaged in northridge. Fire is worse as it just lays waste to so much, whereas even severely damaged houses aren't counted complete losses in a quake, absent fire.

      @@ArvinHaddadOfficial My condolenses for your and your families loss too. I hope you can recover fast and as good as possible under the given circumstances.
      If you chose to rebuild in fireprone areas, I'd strongly recommend checking out a sprinkler system that is fed by a swimming pool and powered from an independant power source. The normal gardensprinklers can make a huge difference in these kind of situations by preventing embers and grassfires from reaching the house, so they might be a worthwhile investment.

    11:13 I have to pause this video for a moment.
    Arvin,
    I stumbled across your videos about a month or so ago. I've always been entertained by home tours and I have a strong interest in architecture. Your channel combines both of those subjects relatively seamlessly and in a way that is fun, educational, and easy to digest. I came for the real estate, but I stayed because you brought a down to earth, comical, human emotion to your videos that turn an otherwise mundane property into an interesting and enjoyable video. I think you would be a pleasure to hang out and have drinks with, just one of the boys.
    I say that, to say this: This video has already upset me. Not in a bad way, per se, but it made me feel a personal connection to the fires out West. I'm all the way on the East Coast and have been my entire life, so I otherwise don't have any connection to area. This has already been an emotional video to watch. I wanted to say that I'm terribly sorry for the losses you and your family have endured and I'm thankful that you all are safe. Keep your head up and keep making the great content I come back time and time again to see.
    Maybe, one day, I will have the pleasure of purchasing a property from you. Sending Love from Maryland and wishing you and your family a speedy and complete recovery. ✌🏽🥹💙
    Edit: This just might be your best video yet. At some point we need a little bit of Sebby on the guitar to really put a bow on this story. 🫶🏽🎸🎚️🔊🎶

    I grew up in the Palisades near the top of Lachman Ln, 1300 block. At 15:23 you pass our old house in this video (and yes, we had incredible views that I totally took for granted growing up.) Weirdly, the neighbors house that also burned down seems to be untouched in this video, so I wonder if it burned later. It's amazing that Via Floresta was mostly unscathed. I remember when they were building houses on Via Floresta and there was nothing beyond those gated streets off Via Floresta. Memories... By the way, how do you know the broken glass is from looters? I saw that in a photo of damage and assumed it was from the heat of the fire that the windows broke.
    It's unbelievable that my entire hometown is gone. And my father built our house in the 60's for $50k. Lots of my friends who lost their homes (or their parents) were in the same situation. It definitely isn't just rich people there. I'm heartbroken. My friend's mom even died in the fire. She didn't evacuate in time and was found in her car in the driveway, totally burned.
    PS. You labeled it "Hannington" at 21:04 but it's "Huntington." When I was a kid that was the ritziest neighborhood in the Palisades. A lot of celebrities lived there (and along Chatauqua on the outer edge.)
    PPS. I just hope Caruso keeps his grubby hands off the alphabet streets and lets the community retain some of its personality (his mall already destroyed some of that in the village.)

    Hey, what I don't understand is how this has been allowed to happen! LA has some of the worlds most expensive real estate with uber high tax brackets, all built in a very dangerous area due to the landscape and extremely hot weather conditions. Many residence of LA are multi millionaires so why have they not protected the land surrounding their properties and cities? If I was silly enough to spend millions on a property in known high risk areas I would hire someone to clean up the trees and dry brush covering an area of atleast 10km. In addition, I would expect the City officials to clean up ALL of dry areas in the surrounding canyons by cutting down trees, cleaning up brush and at the very least install millions of water systems that ensured the surrounding areas didnt become so dry.
    My heart aches for everyone affected by these fires, the scenes I have watched and the reality of losing everything is too much to comprehend, I truly feel that it could all have been avoided.
    Surely if they took the risk of building on ground that shouldn't be built on because of the high risk of fires then it would make more sense to build on all of it, therefore eradicating the risk of fires all together. These fires have occurred due to a perfect storm of circumstance, negligence. Maybe I am being naive thinking the way I am but what is obvious is the fact that the government knew the risks but still cut insurance payouts for fire and wasted gallons and gallons of water to the point that the city ran out!
    IF I was a suspicious minded person, I would think that it was all planned

    Genuine question... What materials were used to construct these homes? Is it wood? I have never visited L.A., but I find it fascinating to see chimneys (made of stone? cement?) still standing strong after the fire, while the walls, floors, and other parts of the homes have been burned down. Does Los Angeles have specific policies requiring homes to be built with certain materials?

It's because we arnt allowed to have brick houses here. The earthquakes will destroy them quickly and crush everyone inside. We also can't have basements. I just moved out one of the not so nice neighborhoods close by to about 30 miles away from there. We are all pretty nervous right now.

    That scene looks like you couldn't salvage anything but some jewelry which would be buried under tonnes of rubble.
    It's interesting from a human psychology point of view however that you said "we though that we might be able to retrieve something". That does show that when you invest heavily in anything, you don't see the loss of it as clearly as someone else. It happens with stalkers also, gamblers, sports team fans, litigants in a case, ex-business partners, ex-lovers - to the outside observer, the investment in that no longer has any payoff, but to the investor with the loss, there's always something you can salvage no matter what.

    Arvin, I thought about you when the fire started coming over the hill threatening Encino and who knows where else in the valley. I’m so sorry for your family losing their home.
    I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Hollywood Hills at the top of the Outpost Estates. When the fire broke out in Runyon Canyon last Wednesday, my heart sank when I learned of the evacuation area. The Outpost Estates hold such valuable memories of growing up, my friends, and the special houses built in the 1930s and later. To me that area, from Franklin to Mulholland and from the Hollywood Bowl to Laurel Canyon, is the heart of Hollywood. In the late sixties, when I was becoming a teenager, rock music came from Laurel Canyon. People in the motion picture and music industries lived in the Outpost Estates and I was friends and went to school with some of their kids. Friends with some to this day.
    The thought of my childhood and teen years burned to the ground was deeply disturbing. How your relatives must feel with the loss of their home, their community, is something that I hoped was unimaginable. But now many of us have actually experienced the devastation or are close to it in some way.
    The thought that a shift in the wind may result in the loss of your house, your neighborhood, your community, your history, is disturbingly real. I don’t have any relatives or friends who were directly affected by the fires, even though some of us were close to them.
    Again, I am so sorry that you and your family have been directly and indirectly impacted by this disaster.
    With love and good thoughts, your LA neighbor.

For older people, they lost the things that were the fabric of their life, and the rebuild is a stress because time is not on their side. They wanted to enjoy their settled lives.

      @@mapesdhs597Yeah that's usually what builders are worried about in CA. But I wonder if they have other regulations there for fires? In Eastern WA you have to have a 4 foot concrete or rock bed buffer surrounding the entire house on order to offer protection from fire.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @thatcreepyxmastreeinyourat8950 I was having a look earlier at the actual building codes and zoning rules for LA and oh my word it's an absolute nightmare of red tape. For example, even if one doesn't need a building permit for a particular type of small structure, one must still obtain separate permission from a planning authority due to zoning rules, and further permissions & permits if the structure is to contain services such as water, power, sewage, etc. It's very complicated and expensive, so many caveats and exeptions, cross references, interconnected rules, etc. I will try posting an example separate link after this showing some relevant Q&A about the rules, you'll see what I mean. For fences, borders and walls, there are rules concerning joint authority between neighbours and other issues. The regulatory burden for construction is pretty heavy where I live in the UK, but CA is on a whole other level, LA inparticular.

      @mapesdhs597 Wow, I literally did the same thing this morning, and you are NOT joking. I spent 2 hours researching before I got a headache. It really makes you wonder why this happened.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @thatcreepyxmastreeinyourat8950 Countless factors involved, but oh boy is it going to be one heck of a mess figuring it out. It's bad enough when many people will not want to hear the likely answers, but in CA the dominant mode of governance means one can't even ask the right questions. The mainstream media will jump on the climate pandic bandwagon and use it to finger point against those they don't like, but climate discussions have become too political, it isn't possible to question narratives without inviting ridicule or worse.
      When people ask what I mean by this (because even saying the above is enough to get some people hopping mad), I point out that since pollution derives by definition primarily from resource consumption, and assuming the claims about climate are correct, then the intent should be to *reduce* resource consumption, in which case the global govt/NGO response that involves *increased* resource consumption is insane, spending literally tens of trillions. The UN stated spending would be approx. 100 trillion. Worse, since this is state spending and therefore unfunded, a great deal of it is printed/borrowed (stealing from the unborn), the rest made up from taxation, driving inflation and forcing ordinary people and businesses to work all the harder to cover the cost, consuming yet more resources in the process.
      Naturally, much of the spending is wasted, some vanishing via corruption, much gladly absorbed by megacorps who collude with political elites over allocation (funny how ex-politicians so often end up on boards of directors at big companies). Climate panic has become an industry in its own right, academia thrives upon it, jobs and funding are at stake, influence, reputation and power (travel the world attending conferences, what fun!); the very thing that ought to be reduced has been increased, and now it's become a stick with which to bash the heads of the masses in order to secure via guilt their resources and votes. Social structures emerged to quash dissent, while the masses learned to virtue signal one's adherance to accepted beliefs for social standing, to an almost religious degree. Worse, young people had the utter crap scared out of them, told their futures would be literally in flames, bullied by promoted figures like Thunberg (as she jets the world and lives the highlife, driven by an unelected body that literally believes in, "You will own nothing and be happy."), hence no wonder some have become rabid activists who themselves now consume unnecessary resources and, ironically, promote the very same state power that drives resource consumption. At the same time, systems of free stuff have exploded, becoming an understandable magnet for millions from developing nations, who after moving then increase their resource consumption by an order of magnitude, straining resources & services, driving inflation, diluting the labour force, damaging local culture and stoking social division; a further means to sustain state power, supress wage growth, etc.
      Hence, it doesn't matter anymore whether the original claims about global warming in the 1970s were correct or not, because it's all morphed into just another way in which state power has been able to expand, massively increasing resource consumption & pollution in the process, creating new ways in which politicians can lie to gain power, along the way forcing everyday pollution issues to be sidelined, eg. water and air quality, toxic metals, soil erosion, etc. It's all gone hand in hand with the abandonment of old norms of reuse and repair (which genuinely minimise resource consumption), replaced with new norms of recycling, systems which themselves almost always actually increase resource consumption (because the most common way the success of recycling schemes is measured is via how much money they save, but any such saved money is then spent on additional resource consumption, negating the intent; plus there are idiot schemes such as those where I am in Scotland, 200M spent on a recycling centre that will never recoup the financial or material cost of its own construction). I had to laugh when food recycling began in my neighbourhood, diesel trucks going round to empty buckets, the plastic used for the buckets & bags, the new state jobs, offices and IT equipment required to run it all, etc.
      Products have evolved in tandem to become harder to repair or reuse, big business fighting against right to repair, while the culture has shifted to encourage regular replacement of products even if they're still functional (tech fashion trends such as the iPhone), while many become "outdated" via mechanisms that don't involve actual faults (such as backend coms degradation, software bloat or function creep making older products become non viable, likewise the use of Windows on PCs). In the US alone, some half a billion phones are thrown away each year. In the UK, absurd rules mean very few 2nd-hand shops sell anything electrical anymore. It ends up as ewaste on the shores of India. Manufacturing is outsourced abroad, allowing developed nations to claim green credentials, while in reality it's just been moved to nations where the processes are far more polluting and unregulated, amid a social culture with little proper protection for worker health or environmental concerns, which also means a lot more stuff gets shipped everywhere.
      Meanwhile, online ordering systems have emerged that allow trivial products to be shipped right round the world at no apparent cost (Temu, Aliexpress, etc.), instead of buying locally (or preferably just not buying such junk at all, eg. a packet of three cotton buds), in the process damaging local businesses that can't compete (outdated trade agreements mean local shipping services must bare the end delivery costs), sustaining wage stagnation and reduced spending power. The list goes on and on. But govts *want* people to spend, not save, because the resulting liquidity helps prop up economies that are so overburdened with debt; if people actually stopped buying unnecessary stuff, a number of national economies would rapidly collapse (and the turnover helps secure votes; GDP good! Please ignore the -ve balance). As Michael Moore put it, "Fear and consume." Personal debt has likewise exploded into the trillions.
      With such an utter mess of factors surrounding just one issue, it isn't possible or indeed allowed to ask the right questions, as merely trying to do so will invite scorn or worse, especially when employers impose adherance to state directives, while exploiting eco fashion trends to sell more product. I tell people, if they really want to "save the planet", then just stop buying stuff they don't need, repair/reuse instead of recycle, cook proper meals instead of relying on ready meals and processed foods, grow their own food where sensible & viable, don't waste leftovers, and stop voting for parties that by definition seek to expand state power. Long ago I was for a time involved in solo climate research, I went to a conference or two, focusing on oceans and clouds; I gave up when I realised just what a huge academic grift it had all become, such enormous waste with little or no incentive to ensure any productive output from the work done. But it meant plenty of jobs and funding. Suddenly there were massive supercomputers used to run climate models (the hardware used being my own speciality of knowledge, ie. SGIs), thousands of CPUs in hundreds of racks filling huge warehouses, requiring dedicated power systems and cooling to run them (I own a small version of one such old system, with 36 CPUs); look up pictures of the SGI Blue Mountain system, you'll see what I mean. But wait, what? Consuming massive resources just to do the math? Makes no sense. And 20 years later, weather models still get it wrong all the time. :D It's much worse now though, with enormous data centres, hyped AI, Cloud systems, crypto, etc. The world has gone compute mad, the power usage is staggering. But hey, messing about with ChatGPT is fun, yes? :}
      All of which is to say, in every regard possible, it's one hell of a mess, and people just will not be willing to allow the right questions to be asked, never mind listen to what the answers might be, or be willing to adjust their behaviour accordingly. In every facet of life, individual choice collides with distorted social norms, media/state propaganda and political ideology. It hasn't been possible to hold an honest conversation about virtually anything for at least 30 years. People have been brainwashed into believing that climate should be static, which is absurd, that's not how this planet works, it's inherantly dynamic, constantly changing (I highly recommend the TV series "Earth Story", by Aubrey Manning). Indeed, we owe our very existence to variable climate, it's what forced us via adaptive evolution to become what we are. And yet, while believing weather patterns shouldn't vary, at the same time people demand that their products become ever faster, better, smaller, they want to buy the new cool thing, the next car, TV or phone, etc. It's a bizarre cultural contradiction.
      Sorry for the rant. Alas, natural disasters have a tendency to highlight hypocritical norms in all levels of society, but nobody wants to hear the truth of things, it means admitting one was wrong, especially wrt to how so many have been conned into supporting something for so long which has ultimately achieved the exact opposite of what they thought was the intent, all because it was such an easy way for elites to secure their votes and resources.
      People will choose to believe a lie either because they want it to be true, or they're afraid it's true.

    Just found your channel and watched this very compassionate video. It’s incomprehensible what has happened and the devastating losses for so many. I can’t even imagine the nightmare insurance stories that have yet to come.

    There nothing naturalabout this disaster. All planned, all deliberate. And just like that a lot of the evidence is gone. I am sad for the innocent caught up in this attack.

      LA is on a very active fault line. It would be a very stupid thing to build homes in a place where earthquakes happen regularly. There’s no earthquakes in the UK. What works in one country is not guaranteed to work in a different one.

    How strange would it be to own one of the only homes saved from fires on a massive subdivision complex! Coming home to your home, to nothing but piles or charred rubble.. You'd feel some sort of survivors guilt for your home, for sure!!

    Fire turns everything to dust. - not really when you build fireproof and have firefighters who are not DEI hires and have working hydrants at their disposal.
