  • IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT WAY TO KEEP YOUR UTILITY BILLS DOWN AND AT THE SAME TIME KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE BOTH IN THE WINTER OR SUMMER? THERE IS A RADIANT BARRIER PRODUCT OUT ON THE MARKET THAT IS TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. IT’S CALLED “RADIANCE” MADE BY A COMPANY CALLED CHEMREX.
RADIANCE LOW-E ATTIC AND DECKING RADIANT BARRIER IS APPLIED LIKE PAINT ONTO PLYWOOD DECKS, OR PROPERLY PREPARED METAL OR MASONRY SURFACES. IT’S A COATING WHICH SLOWS THE HEAT LOSS OF A BUILDING IN THE WINTER AND SLOWS HEAT GAINS IN THE SUMMER. RADIANCE HAS A MICRO-SCOPIC REFLECTIVE PARTICLES SUSPENDED IN AN INFRARED TRANSPARENT BINDER MATRIX. IN THE WINTER MORE THAN 50-PERCENT OF THE RADIANT HEAT, WHICH WOULD NORMALLY ESCAPE, IS REFLECTED BACK, SLOWING THE LOSS OF HEAT FROM THE BUILDING. IN THE SUMMER, IT KEEPS MORE THAN 50-PERCENT OF THE SUNS INFRARED ENERGY FROM EMITTING INTO THE BUILDING, KEEPING THE BUILDING AND IT’S OCCUPANTS COOLER AND MORE COMFORTABLE.
ONE GALLON WILL COVER ABOUT 500 SQUARE FEET. YOU CAN FIND IT IN SOME HOME CENTERS. YOU CAN CONTACT THE COMPANY TO FIND OUT WHERE IT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA.

Measuring the heat drop with a 250 degree heat source seems a bit dishonest. What is the heat drop when the heat source is 100F or something more realistic?

How hot do you think shingles get with the sun baking on them? Bet it's a lot hotter than that 250 watt light bulb.

@@alethafrance5741 absolutely not. Anyone who has worked as a roofer knows that the temperature of shingles on a roof are around 140 to 160 degrees in the sun in summer - at least in Florida where I live.

The heat drop they showed is actually really underwhelming compared to foil. Foil has some really crazy thermal properties. My stove on low reads in the 400s on my IR gun, and low 100s when I put a sheet of plain old kitchen foil over it. There's just no comparison.
Now radiant barrier can't take that kind of heat because it's got a non-aluminum scrim that melts, but I've seen similar performance to plain foil when pitted against my coffee pot (180F, foil reads like 88 in a 76 degree room).

This is interesting. This radiant paint is not that much more expensive than regular paint, and applying it is good and interesting. Aluminum foil actually has better qualities. Today, many roofs are made with plywood that effectively has aluminum foil glued to the bottom of it. This has better qualities. This Radiant paint emits about 44% (about half) of the heat, aluminum foil is suppose to emit 5% of heat. There are other considerations. (moisture, humidity, mold, looks). In practice, it may be more complicated.
