    I live in the Dallas area. Would it be a wise choice to lay radiant foil on top of the insulation along with mounting it above underneath the roof ? Or this is double work and not effective?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +bigred3282 It really depends. Stapling up WITH ductwork in the attic will have the biggest impact in the Summer. Laying it out over the insulation will have the biggest benefit in the Winter. Usually, here in Texas people go for the big Summer benefit by stapling up. However, we have had many customers do BOTH with spectacular year-round benefit. Once you staple it up, laying it out should be pretty easy if you are looking for a cold weather benefit too.

    EXCELLENT video and explanations!!!
    Previously I thought that the radiant barrier only worked by installing (stapling) on the underside of the roof. So I avoided a whole section of the roof because I was not able to get into that area to install on the roof/top underside.

    I just installed attic foil in my house and I love it. It took me a couple of weekends to install, so after the first weekend I used a temperature gun to see if there was any difference in temperature. Area which was covered with attic foil was much cooler than the areas that were not covered yet. attic foil also a very strong product it is hard to tare. attic foil is a great investment 👍

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sunnier/hotter the area the bigger the savings. Also, one story ranch style homes get better results compared to two story "cake" homes since it only reduces heat through the top/roof area. It basically make is like shade or a cloudy day for the roof. Savings are hard to pin down. I'd read some of the 2000 reviews on www.AtticFoil.com Many customers tell about their savings.

      No worries. The SuperPerf www.AtticFoil.com has tiny holes PUNCHED in the foil. It will not trap moisture because of the high permeability. It's specifically made to lay over attic insulation. We have not had a single instance with a moisture issue under the SuperPerf product.

    What if the radiant 48 inch barrier, I put between the rafter "V", overlaps the barrier lying flat on top of the insulation on both sides by 12 inches spanning a 2 foot gapping between rafters forming the "V" where it would take a lot of trimming to get it to lie flat, but where it overlaps it is above the point it overlaps it is above the barrier below by 12 inches. In other words looking from above you can not see exposed insulation, but from the side the 48 inch piece is about 12 inches above the flat lying pieces allowing much air movement between the overlays.

      It depends. If you have condensation on the ductwork, it e means warm-moist air is coming in contact with a surface below the dew point. Foil may or may not help. I have been telling my son about your attic foil insulation barrier. He lives in Houston, TX. His roof has the foil on the bottom side of the OSB, The attic still seems to be hot and humid (April). Would it benefit the house to staple foil to the trusses? If yes

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Randy Lavine The humidity is more about attic ventilation (Plus he lives in Houston). Will AtticFoil help? Radiant barrier decking (which he has now) reduces overall heat flow by about 30% AtticFoil when applied to the bottom of the rafters will reduce heat flow by 50% alone acorrding to the full scale test done by the Department Of Energy - See testing results here: www.atticfoil.com/index.php/technical-info/dept-of-energy-study-results/ Yes, he can do both. We have had many customers add AtticFoil below their radiant barrier decking resulting in the attic being really close to ambient temperature. It's hard to quantify the energy savings but the attic will definitely be cooler. IF the attic is NOT much cooler (measure the AIR temperature below the AtticFoil), this means that the attic ventilation is really bad. Basically the air is getting "stuck" similar to a clogged drain and can't get out or come in. Take a look at this video for attic ventilation suggestions: th-cam.com/video/NUvgeP7--0Q/w-d-xo.html

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, you do NOT want to "sandwich" the www.AtticFoil.com between your cellulose and the new batts. The correct way would be to add the batts and then put the AtticFoil on TOP of the batts. Foil needs to face an airspace. And you want it to be the first thing the radiant heat from the roofs hits to reflect 97%.

    Can I use the staple method and laying foil on insulation. I live in texas

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure if you are asking if you can do BOTH methods or can staple it down over the insulation. For the Over Insulation method you do NOT want to staple it down. You should have at least several inches of insulation above the wood ceiling joists which would prevent you from stapling down to them. If you are asking if you can do BOTH methods, yes you can do both. The biggest impact in Texas will be the staple up method especially if you have ductwork in the attic. If you add the over-insulation method with the staple up method, then the over-insulation method will primarily help to reduce Winter heat loss. atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/best-install-method/

      Hale White I found using a 3” roofing nail taped to your stick works best. Also, when you poke the nail through the RB foil, wiggle it around making the hole a bit larger than the size of the nail so it slides easily on or off. Then make sure your hole is several inches away from the front edge to fold back the foil toward you to help prevent the nail from coming out of the hole prematurely. Keep a constant forward motion and slight tension on the foil when pushing back to the edge. Usually the weight of the foil dragging over the insulation is enough to keep the foil on the nail until your ready to release. I’m not a professional, but this worked for me.

It is really difficult to tell if it is working properly. The 1st year I would say that it did work right but still hard to tell. I say that because I have 2 window air conditioners and I only put one in last year but this year I had to put both in. My attic is a little less than 1000 sq. ft. and has 2 gable vent fans.

      Yes, if you are heating/cooling then you will also need traditional insulation. More info here: atticfoil.com/index.php/how-radiant-barrier-works-in-attics/ Check with your local building office as far as required r-values. I know in some places the addition of www.AtticFoil.com can be used as a "credit" towards r-value.

    The only problem I see with this method is that it will make it very difficult to work in the attic. It will be very hard to find a place to step and will most likely pull the foil out of place as the insulation compresses. Also finding the wiring isn't going to be any fun either.

      Working in attics is never fun or easy.
