    So many people here don't understand the purpose of his MRE. The MRE is meant for international use, for humanitarian disasters. They made it vegetarian so anybody from anywhere can eat it. Beans and potatoes are almost universal food.

    • @dubc3615
      @dubc3615  2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Just as you mentioned it was designed to support the dietary needs of many different people. I think they did well for what they were aiming to do.

    • @OmegaReaver
      @OmegaReaver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      That and there's a minimum of allergens: no peanuts, wheat, milk. Toss in cultural/ religion neutral foods and you've got something that 99.9% of humanity can and will eat.

    • @bluegizmo1983
      @bluegizmo1983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If they are making these vegetarian for a longer shelf life or something, or because it's the cheapest and easiest way to make a larger amount of meals, that's fine. But making all humanitarian MRE's vegetarian because a few people choose not to eat meat/dairy is just ridiculous. If your starving and need humanitarian food relief to begin with, you eat whatever you get! Your personal choice to be vegetarian should be the LAST thing on your mind when your starving and someone's helping you by giving you food.

    • @OmegaReaver
      @OmegaReaver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@bluegizmo1983 It's less about vegetarian/vegans and more about making meals that are okay for religious requirements, to wit, halal, kosher and the like. This way these can be used anywhere without having to modify them or produce others, simplifying the logistical chain.

    Quoting the actual specifications, the HDR is designed to "provide the widest possible acceptance from the variety of potential consumers with diverse religious and dietary restrictions from around the world". It contains no animal products, except a limited amount of dairy products, below the limit that would cause a problem for a person with lactose intolerance. Any alcohol or alcohol-based ingredients are also banned.
    All rations also contain a fruit paste, or pudding, suitable for feeding to infants. In this particular case, it is the :"Smoothie".
    These rations have been INCREDIBLY successful at achieving their objective, especially considering that one MRE feeds a person for one day, AND they only cost 20 PERCENT of that of a regular MRE to produce.

      @@TekGriffon wow who was that? Never mind I think I saw it. It was 9 months ago when published. Apparently a LOT of people hated it. I did leave an educational comment. What his explanation was that they felt we should do better and could. We could- we could add tea or coffee, and an electrolyte drink, or a water packet, or juice. But otherwise they really didn't get the point of why they are that way. But he doesn't really seem to research much into the mre's anyway. They thought one was slimy- lol they should try Natto- A favorite common addition to a Japanese breakfast. Most Americans not only (I would be one no doubt) can't eat it, they throw up trying. Then maybe he'd understand.

    Wish we could get back to a place where everyone was proud to be an American. I just thought the "Food gift from the people of the United States of America" was a really cool addition and it's the kind of thing as an American that makes me feel proud to be an American citizen.

      It’s the very definition of propaganda. Humanitarian aid is objectively good, but in the context of conflict zones where these are deployed it’s also the “ win hearts and minds” objective of helping people think you’re on their side (even when you are occupying their country). It’s not accidental. Good ration though.

  • @VanquishMediaDE

    These meals are intended for global distribution, due to religious, cultural, and dietary restrictions, the universal vegetarian meal can be deployed to all corners of the globe without issue.

    I'm so glad you did the smoothie with some cookie. In my head I was screamin' "Crumble the cookie into the smoothie!" LOL. I bet the shortbread cookies that sometimes come with these would be good in the smoothie, as well. I don't think I would mix the cookies, butter and jam together, in any combination, unless I intended to crumble all the crackers up into the mains. They are needed for the crackers.
    The peanut butter is out now because of allergy fears and the several various smoothies are for folks that may not have teeth to chew regular food. A group of refugees, for instance, could trade around firmer food in order to feed the elderly some nutrition. I think the thought that went into these HREs is pretty cool. Vegetarian, Kosher and other religious and dietary concerns. Ain't America a great, thoughtful and generous country!

    One of my buddies was a Loadmaster during several Humanitarian Operations. (before he retired from the USAF). His job was to load and verify food stuffs, medical supplies, water, housing materials (usually tents or portable buildings), etc. One of the things they had to be wary of was making sure that religious or cultural restrictions were not violated. Before we got involved in the Middle East we really didn't have a lot of Halal (Islamic) or vegan based foods. So we started making specific Halal based and Vegan products with the proper markings on the outside. Made life much easier for the Loadmaster. You don't want to accidently drop the wrong thing to someone. He was telling me one day that he got couple of pallets to drop off (landing, not parachuting) to refugee camps. Turns out the people there weren't Islamic, but an offshoot of a Coptic Religion (primarily vegans). They did not appreciate the Halal food and refused to eat it. They had to find something to make them happy and ended up stealing two pallets of Vegan food from a Marine base (didn't realize the Marines had a lot of vegans). Either way the Coptics loved the food and didn't complain after the resupply. I believe he is showing one of the new types of Vegan foods for refugees. I don't know if it had sunflower butter, I just know they enjoyed the food, even if it was MRE's. We're always discovering new types of religious/cultural restrictions we don't want to offend while trying to help them out.

    A metric ton of these things are on the market. I'm guessing these were contract overruns or the cases have at least 1 or 2 MREs that are defective in some way, like an overbaked cookie. The nice thing about these is that they are extremely easy on the stomach and you won't be shitting your brains out after eating it. They're cheap bottom dollar meals that are not intended for American taste buds, they are meant to be dropped into places like Afghanistan and poor African countries. They're pretty easy to supplement with a meat product if you take these on a camping trip or do milsim events.

      @@dubc3615 Yes. I checked the "regs" and it only requires that ONE of the components be suitable for infants, and I am sure that these would be suitable for the elderly or infirm as well.. That is why the "Smoothie" is present.

    I got to ask you would you rather have a humanitarian MRE for double the portions? or would you rather have the standard MRE because you like meat and potatoes?
    On a side note, was the oatmeal cookie just a regular cookie or was it considered a protein cookie with whey protein?

    • @dubc3615
