People talk about John Stones and the 4 CBs at City this season like it’s some crazy mad evolutionary unicorn tactic…it’s not. It’s not that out of the box and it’s not exactly new. And it’s not just Pep inexplicipably doing what he wants.
If you care to read a demystified version of Pep’s adaptatios to his system, here you go:
City have been using a double pivot since 2020 - when Pep realised that Rodri is not as dynamic as Fernandinho and needs support. That’s when he started playing 3-2-5 with Zinchenko inverting deep, into the double pivot next to Rodri.
When in the 20/21 season KDB got injured, City was lacking a bit of creativity and that’s where Cancelo broke through.
Cancelo is not as good in tight spaces as Zinchenko - that’s why he wasn’t starting before bc he’s not that good at playing in the double pivot.
But he’s a great creator. So he inverted further forward - practially playing as the left sided 10 next to KDB, with Bernardo dropping deeper to go into the double pivot. And Cancelo performed so well, he became a starter going into 21/22.
That’s why (to answer Matisse’s simple question that clueless whaffle Hugh couldn’t answer), last season, Gundogan wasn’t a starter. Bc Cancelo was starting and since Bernardo is much better at dropping into the double pivot and the defensive side in general, he was preferred over Gundogan in the left 8 position.
And that’s why we either saw Cancelo+Bernardo (Cancelo left 10, Bernardo double pivot) or Gundogan+Zinchenko (Gundogan left 10, Zinchenko double pivot).
Even last day of the season against Villa when Gundogan was brought on, he was brought on _together_ with Zinchenko for _both_ Bernardo and Cancelo.
This is where City had a problem in the first half of the season. Zinchenko had left and for seemingly the first time ever Bernardo was out of form.
Again: City was either playing Cancelo+Bernardo or Gundogan+Zinchenko.
With Zinchenko gone and Bernardo off it….Pep was left with Gundogan+Cancelo. Which he did at first. But he realised: “This ain’t it.” for the same reasons he did not pair them up to begin with.
In possession, Cancelo and Gundo intuitively tried to take up the same positions and crowded the left side area.
Out of possession, it was defensively unreliable.
So he did the exact opposite of playing the right-footed offensive player Canelo with Gundogan.
He instead started playing a left-footed CB Aké for more defensive solidity while keeping Gundogan in the left 10.
But Ake isn’t good at inverting. So he let Walker invert from the right. But that didn’t work well bc Walker isn’t good at inverting like that either. So he started playing Lewis to invert from the right, who is technically great at it (and understands what positions to take at any time etc).
And once Stones had understood the role a bit more by watching Lewis play, he was brought into that position since he’s the more mature/developed/experienced/better player. It was obvious that Stones had the technical ability to do so. He has literally filled in at CDM for City before a few seasons back.
The last step was for Pep to eventually realise that it was generally safer to have Stones invert from CB instead of RB.
The reason Pep prefers Akanji on the right instead of Walker, when Stones is playing and inverting from right CB is bc Akanji is better on the ball.
When City was inverting from the left with Zinchenko/Cancelo, most of their build up was done on that left side. And Walker was mainly a defender.
But since the inverting player is now playing on the right side, the build up has shifted more into that direction as well.
And Walker is the worst passer in the team. Worst passing accuracy and fewest progressive passes.
So after all that…the outcome is: Aké - Dias - Stones - Akanji
And that’s how you end up with 4 CBs. It’s not some crazy new revolution.
Pep is following the same principles he’s been following for years. The implementation just looks different because the personell has slightly changed.

As an arsenal fan, feels horrible going out on a whimper like that. We played like Chelsea, no heart. On the other front i am proud that we have been up there for 90% of the season. We just need excellent players coming in to finish the job on the latter part of the season. Some player's don't have the legs to play all 38 games while maintaining the levels that we had at the start. It is unfortunate to be called bottlers trying to chase down pep but it is what it is. We must strengthen next season and go again and even then we might be called bottlers again if we come second but we must keep asking the questions.

ISSUES WITH ARSENAL
1. Arteta and his stuborness to prove his signings and his favourites even if they are playing bad.
2. Arteta only playing 14-15 players even though we have 25 players squad, forget the youth players.
4. Every pass forward has to go through a middlemen, if we are at half line then it is Rice, if we are much ahead then Odegaard.
5. The defenders are having dorky moments.
6. Strikers are not clinical.
7. Arteta is overcoaching the attackers, one thing that is common with every player in the final third is that they don't take much risk, they rather play it safe.
8. Arteta doesn't punish players that are his favourites, Saka could have a stinker game and he will play 90 min but Maritinellii gets subbed even when he plays well.
9. Raya is yet to prove himself so is Kai.
10. Money wasted on Raya, Havertz, Lokonga, Tavares, Vieira, etc, we are not City we cannot afford to waste 100 million plus.
11. Arteta's man management is shit for the players that dont come into his 14-15 player group, he hardly plays them and then we have to sell them at a loss. ESR, Nelson & Nketiah will suffer same fate.
12. Arteta needs to pull his head out of his arse, he hasn't won anything to prove himself, he needs to act less arrogant and let the players play instinctively in the final third.
