I've mentioned this before on another Jurassic Park reaction but imagine seeing this as a kid in 1993 when at the time, we hadn't really seen anything quite like this. It was mind blowing and no surprise at all when it was one of the biggest, if not the biggest movie of 1993.

Seeing this movie in theaters as a child was like placing a piece into a mostly empty jigsaw puzzle. It's like a part of who I was to become had been laid down. I'm such a big fan of it and dinosaurs were a thing I very much liked as a child. Quotes, scenes, dreams (and nightmares) from this movie punctuated my development as a child. To the point that decades later I'm on TH-cam watching people watch the movie I like to watch.

It's not that Hammond doesn't care about the storm. It's that this was literally his only chance at having the park approved. Because of red tape/bureaucracy and the schedules of all the characters this was the only window he had to give a tour of the park. Hammond stayed back from the tour because, well, he's the park owner, not a tour guide. He would've had responsibilities that kept him at the control center, such as being available for Arnold, Nedry, Wu and others to come and talk to about general operations at the park.
Don't get me wrong, of course Hammond wanted to make money, but as he says in the scene where he's eating ice cream with Ellie, he mostly wanted to give people something they'd never seen before. Something that wasn't just a scam/trick-of-the-eye like the flea circus he used to operate. He wanted to provide kids like his grandchildren with the experience of a lifetime, and to leave behind a legacy of being the person who brought the wonder of real, living dinosaurs into the world of man.
His flaw is hubris. It's like Malcom said, he was so preoccupied with the fact that he could bring dinosaurs back to life and wow people, that he neglected to think of whether or not he should.

Great response. I dont know why it was even necessary. I saw this movie as a **child** and could understand all of this. it surprises me to see reactors have all these questions, explained to them as recently as an hour ago.

@@slchance8839 I feel like it's cause they're half paying attention. Like, a lot of them will ask a question, that was literally explained 2 min before, in a 3 min long scene.
Gotta try and "figure out" the movie, outsmart it, etc. While they're doing that, they stop paying attention.
Has a scene with Nedry setting up industrial espionage, for no reason other than profit. "Oh, is there no villain in the movie?"
I saw one reactor, where when they were at the trex paddock, looking for Alan and the gang, she was like "The trex attacked! What do you think happened?? You're so stupid!"
Like... they were trying to find them. Not doing an investigation into what went on

@@Eidlones well put. you said it clearer and shorter than I did. I sometimes wonder if it's a casualty of the medium: "the world is watching...i better say something. better make it interesting. hope i dont look lame...i should guess what's going to happen." maybe they wouldnt do that if not in front of a webcam. I dont know.
On the other hand, some reactors are purely delightful: they catch some things. not others. get sucked in. you can see the wonder in their eyes or the marvel in their expression.
i love watching people cry at the end of Return of the Jedi (even I didnt cry.,...and was there!) or gasp when they see the brachiosaur for the first time. I especially like when they get swept up by the music in the scene.
The reality is, that the reactor is a victim of a giant lie between us:
Audience (me): "Please watch my favorite movie and love it and say it's YOUR favorite movie so I can comment on what great taste you have."
It's like the Emperor's new clothes: everyone goes along with the deception.
Ah well, no real harm done
and it's a fun way to connect with other people
thank you for your thoughtful response.

In the book, Hammond 100% doesn't care about his grandkids. He even says so towards the end. His negative traits were given to Gennaro for the movie, who originally had Ellie's fearless traits (he's the one that originally goes with Muldoon to the raptor compound). Ellie was originally Grant's student. The kids were swapped for the most part - Tim was the older brother hacker, while Lex was the younger sister who annoyed everyone.

When this came out, the word of mouth was insane. Didn't really have the internet back then. Not anything like today. This was a Star Wars kind of moment for movies. No one had made anything quite like this before and it literally blew everyone's mind. The mix of CG and animatronics is so well done that even now it can be a little hard to tell. And the story telling is masterful. You get a hint of the danger right off the bat, but then everything seems to be okay, they've fixed issues, etc. Power goes out, one of the most intense and awesome scenes ever filmed with the T-Rex. Then things calm a bit again. But once the raptors enter things just are unrelenting. The fence scene terrified me as a kid. I've seen so many reactors watching this say at multiple points throughout the movie "they aren't going to x? no... they can't do that!" This movie does. Yeah, the kids survive, but honestly, just barely. They were 1/8" from being in T-Rex's mouth. Chased by raptors and nearly caught by them several times... the trauma from this would be hard to imagine.
Hammond is an interesting character. He legitimately wanted to do something amazing for the world, and make it affordable so anyone could come and see the dinosaurs. He genuinely cares for his grandchildren and even his guests... but his own dream has kind of blinded him. Malcom says it really well at the dinner table, "you didn't earn this power so you don't respect it." Something Ellie says later "I didn't have enough respect for that power, and now it's out." (A nice little double meaning. Power of cloning and genetic manipulation and the literal power.) The bit where he thinks he should go instead of her... he's old and yeah, a bit sexist, but he can't quite bring himself to say it out loud which to my mind makes it more of the excuse he's chosen because he feels responsible for fixing what has happened himself.

Hammond wasn’t being sexist in the sense that he thought Dr. Satler couldn’t handle herself. He was just trying to be “gentlemanly” and fulfill the role he believed men should take in dangerous situations - putting himself in danger as a means of protecting the women and children. You can tell by the way he’s saying it that he almost feels guilty if he doesn’t offer to go in her place. I don’t think he’s being this sexist/misogynistic old guy.

She's a liberal. They don't attempt to view things in proper context or actually try to understand the situation, they just throw out the first word that ends in "ist" or "phobe" that comes to mind and pat themselves on the back because it makes them feel morally superior.

I actually think he’s offering to jump on the metaphorical grenade, he didn’t know if his grandkids were alive, but if sacrificing himself would ensure their survival, then that is at least something he can do. He does practically nothing the entire movie. So can’t blame the guy for trying to control his own outcome, instead of letting himself be controlled by situations around him.

Fun fact: the segment with the bad guy, Nedry dude with glasses, there are actually 2 of the Dilophosaurus's. The one he meets at the tree and gets spit on and the second one in the jeep because he left the jeep door open before stumbling down the hill.
Fun Fact #2: There are a total of 3 Raptors, the one thats designated as The Big One and her 2 cronies, one of which gets locked in the freezer. According to Muldoon, Aussie hunter guy, there was originally 8 Raptors before the Big One was introduced. She then took over the pride and killed all but 2 of the other Raptors.

Muldoon isn't Australian. He's South African.
As for there being two Dilophosaurs, there's no source for this. The argument of 'why did the Dilophosaurus spit on Nedry, then get into the car instead of attacking him outright' is kind of flawed as it doesn't make much more sense for one Dilophosaurus to spit venom at him, and another one to attack when the spitter could attack instead.
Most venomous animals don't attack their prey outright. Snakes bite their prey, then pull back and wait for their venom to work before approaching their weakened pray, the same goes for Komodo dragons. It makes sense for the Dilophosaurus to wait until it knows Nedry has most likely been disabled by its venom, then approach him, at which point he's retreated to the 'safety' of his jeep.

Let's give Addie a round of applause for surviving Jurassic Park (1993). 👏👏 This is my all-time favorite movie. You're reaction to it was great, especially at that one moment at 27:44 when Jeremy grabbed your shoulder, during the most tense part of the finale. BTW, the Ford Explorers actually do have tops. They were modified with large sunroofs, which the T-Rex broke into as it was attacking the kids. And Lex grabbed the flashlight to get Alan's attention. The kids were in panic when the T-Rex came out. Not only that, the navigation speed on the unix systems of the Silicon Graphics IRIS Crimson computers were a lot different in 93, compared to now. And also, the spitter dinosaur that kills Nedry is a Dilophosaurus.

Lewis Dogson has more of a backstory in the book. He is one of the most aggressive geneticists in america. He works for a genetic company called BioSyn. InGen (John Hammonds company) is one of their competitors. What BioSyn does is that they take products of their competitors, reverse engineers them and adds their own qualities to them. They have a thing for corporate espionage. Lewis Dogson was the only boardmember of BioSyn to draw the connection and conclusion that InGen was cloning dinosaurs so he reached out to Dennis Nedry (The slob) to steal the embryos.

Hi Addie. If you are interested to know, the premise of the movie being cloning dinosaurs from their DNA found in preserved blood is actually impossible for a very simple reason. Since there haven't been any dinosaurs on earth (apart from birds, of course) for the past 65 million years and the fact that we know that DNA has a half-life of 526 years, you can kind of infer the problem right away.

I remember that when I was a little kid, before this movie came out, I used to think it was a playful thing when our dog shook its head with a rag toy in its mouth. Even after I learned that predators do that to break the neck of their prey, it still looked cute. Then, when I was 13, I saw this movie and saw the T-Rex do it to Gennaro. It stopped looking cute after that. Don't get me wrong: I still love dogs, but this movie gave me a visceral understanding of that particular behavior. Every time I see a dog shake something, I can't help but picture the T-Rex and Gennaro.

Fun fact, as a teen I volunteered at a dinosaur museum, we didn't have a lot of local dinosaur bones but some very specific conditions were met 200 million years ago that allowed their footprints or rather a natural casting of their footprint to survive to this day. They even got special permission to build the building super close to the road because there was evidence of a dinosaur squatting down in the mud and taking a break.

One of the reasons this movie was such a milestone was it was the first time Dinosaurs were brought to live on-screen using CGI effects. Before this film, if you were to see a Dinosaur on the big screen, it would be created in one of three forms: a person in a very crappy and unrealistic costume, an animatronic puppet (which could be very clunky and not very realistic either), or through stop-motion claymation (you also would find cartoon-style animations of Dinosaurs, but these were used much more often for documentaries than actual movies). The third of these options produced the most realistic images and movements, but it was the one of the three that also took the longest amount of time to produce. CGI of this quality had never been done before, and it set a new standard for visual effects to live up to.

I've seen many Jurassic Park reactions on TH-cam, and I never understand why Lex gets so much disappointment from her screaming and her actions during the car scene. She isn't a Dino Nerd like Tim, so why would she know anything about the suspected behavior of a T-Rex. She's a computer hacker, most computer hackers aren't particularly outgoing or experts on handling an animal attack. She's also..... A child.... So her screaming is rather realistic. She's also the eldest between herself and Tim. Speaking as an older sibling; when things go bad I tend to try to make decisions that would protect my little sibling. So I can see why Lex got the torch. It was in the emergency cache in the boot. She was attempting to be responsible.
