    Great video! Glad someone finally shows what the rangefinder/viewfinder focus looks like in action. Though, I think at 04:27 you may have meant to say "shutter release cable" (which connects to the shutter release for usage in 'bulb mode') rather than "flash" :).
    'Bulb mode' does not have to do with using the flashbulb attachment (despite the confusing similarity in their names). The flash attachment is to be used in 'instant mode'.

    Great video, helped me learn more about my new thrift store hidden gem! Thinking it’s 1945 C3, looks pretty similar to yours just going to clean it a bit and test it🤩 best part yet, came with the leather case for $14.99- what a steal!!

    If you google "Argus C3 package with new found respect" I discuss the lens changeability with both wide angle and telephoto lenses. Also its quirks and shortcomings.

    Is there something wrong with my cocking lever if it points straight down but still works? Because it still functions just fine but it doesn't fit in the case very well now because of it.

    I’m looking at purchasing one of these cameras. I’m very new to film but I’m looking to start as a hobby. How do you know if an Argus C3 is in good/working condition? I have found one for $45 dollars at a local flea market but I’m hesitant to buy it. Any help would be appreciated!

  • @nw6070
    @nw6070 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Its a pity you did not explain how to handle the lighting and how to use the inner ring of the lens and the shutter speed, does one need a separate light meter? Does one just guess?

    • @TPDProductions
      @TPDProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’d need an external light meter, and after you get the hang of it you’ll get to know what it needs to be set to. I shoot 400 speed film, and if it’s a sunny day I always find myself setting it to 1/300th at f16

    • @nw6070
      @nw6070 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TPDProductions thanks for the feedback! Yeah i guess with experience one can make close guesses. I first need to get my head around the interplay of apperture size and speed. My argus does not have f16 though, only 18 and next to that 12.7 and the last 3.5. Also the apperture speed wheel has way more numbers going from 5 to 300. maybe an older model? Other than that it looks identical except it does not have the argus name on the bottom left like yours and has a lens cap and different leather box. I bought mine in cape town though, maybe they made copy models here.

    Thank you for doing a video on the under-appreciated Argus C3. It doesn't get near the respect it should. One of the derogatory things people say about it is that it looks like a brick. Since the design dates back to 1936, let's look at the prestige cameras of the era. Made for the advanced amateur was the Leica with its itsy-bitsy rangefinder and separate viewfinder. The C3 has about the same viewfinder. The other prestige camera of the time, which was made for the actual professional photographer was the Zeiss Contax I, which was introduced in 1932. It had far superior lenses than the Leica and a wider speed range. For those unfamiliar with this camera, pull up a photo. Dang, if the Argus C3 doesn't look a lot like the Zeiss Contax I. Clearly Argus C3 was modeled after it. The Contax I is black, shaped like a brick and has a focus wheel rather than the focusing the lens barrel. Argus wanted to bring quality 35mm to the American mass market with a look that says - "Professional.". They apparently succeeded quite well! However, soon after, Zeiss introduced a whole new look to the camera world and a whole new combined rangefinder/viewfinder with the incredible Contax II and Contax III. These beautiful cameras changed the way cameras looked and operated. They were really the first modern cameras and forever afterwards set the standard for how cameras should be designed. They were so innovative, that Leica didn't catch up with features and lens quality for nearly two decades with their M series cameras. Nonetheless, the Argus C3 soldiered on for decades with the original design modeled after the original Contax I. This was quite an achievement, and it should be celebrated more. People would not have bought the camera if they were not pleased with it. There is something to be said for a low price point with good quality, even if the design is dated.

    • @TPDProductions

      Open the back of the camera, and look at the shutter blades. When you cock and fire the camera, you should see them quickly open and close. Do this at both the fastest and slowest settings and use your judgment to see if they’re correct, sometimes the shutters on the C3s get stuck open on the slower settings. Hope this helps!

      @@mattsumus I looked but I couldn’t find it, but assuming it works and is in good shape, $20-30 would be a good price. If the case is included you could bring up the price, and if you film test it and/or disassemble the camera and give it a tune-up it could also give it a price hike. People will pay that little bit extra if you test it and verify that it works, but anything above $60 is a bit overpriced in my opinion, unless it includes accessories.
