Absolutely wonderful track recorded half a century ago in 1971 , it only got to number 14 in the UK charts and for some reason the Madness cover version is far better known , this tune always lifts my spirit and stirs my soul with it's amazing acoustic guitar riff , warm heartfelt vocals and timeless message !.

This song reminds me of a girl that lived across the road when I stayed with my grandparents in the 70s she was gorgeous I tried to get onto her but unfortunately she didn't feel the same way about me as I felt towards her. But every time I hear this song it brings back memories memories of her..her name was Karen. ❤

The Madness cover (probably better known by younger listeners) is well arranged and professionally done. But I much prefer this original. Perhaps that is because I knew it when it was released in 1971. But somehow it also seems more authentic.
Glad to think that Labi must have made a packet from this song due to the Madness cover, which still gets heavy rotation airplay, at least in the UK. But seriously : they shouldn’t just pay him royalties, they should pay him (and the rest of us!) **compensation**. I like and respect Madness. They work hard, they deserve their success. I love all sorts of cover versions. But their cover of this? Just no. It’s a desecration of this subtle, nuanced, unique, filigree masterpiece. Oh, and if you like this, make sure you check out “Cannock Chase” from the same album, and give thanks that Madness didn’t get hold of that too.
