- DIY Fairy House Lamp Using a Balloon
Hi, in this video tutorial I show you how I made a fairy house lamp using a balloon as a base, some cardboard, a few egg cartons for the paper clay and colors. This is a creative way to teach children about recycling and also stimulate their imagination.
I start by making the paper clay from the egg cartons. It is really easy to make because we only use two ingredients: egg cartons and P.V.A. glue (commonly referred to as wood glue, white glue, carpenter's glue, school glue, Elmer's glue in the US). I used an old blender to make it really smooth. I tear the egg cartons to pieces and place them in the blender. I add hot water over the cartons and start the blender. When it looks like a homogeneous mix I squeeze the water out trough a sieve. You should squeeze as much water as you can. I then add the glue. I used about three tablespoons of P.V.A. glue for half of the 10 eggs carton. You should add one spoon at a time and mix it to see if it has the consistency you want, and keep adding glue until the paste is the way you want it. The next step is covering the balloon in a thin layer of paper clay. After the paper clay is dry I glue some cardboard details like a big roof on top and some smaller roofs on the sides, over the windows. I also made a chimney from cardboard roll, and a base for the little house. I draw the windows and doors and added volume using small cardboard pieces (you can use tinfoil for this step but, as some of you mentioned in the comments, it is not so good for the environment, and yes, I do read your comments, by the way :D ). I also made a structure under the house and a little staircase using cardboard rolls. I covered all the new elements in with paper clay and let it dry. The painting goes like this: I start with the plane colors for every detail like brown stones, green windows, white walls, brown rooftop and later add shadows using diluted brownish colors. Then I add lights using light colors or even white to the surface of the texture. In the end I added some battery operated LED string lights inside. I know some of you would prefer to cover the windows on the inside with some kind of translucent paper so you don't see the lights but that's entirely up to you. This video is more about the fairy house than it is about the lights :D

The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question
5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations?
I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay
6. What brand of paper clay do you use?

I'm sure others have said this, but I would glue tissue paper over the windows and doors (from the inside) to make the light more diffuse and also so you can't see in (unless you make an interior space). Great job, and great use of materials!

@@user-ly4mm4nw9iПривет. Для данного видео... Горячая вода, карточный лоток из под яиц. Прокрутить, через блендер. Выжать смесь, через сито. В смесь добавить клей пва. Хорошенько перемешать.

omg....you did SUCH a beautiful job on this.....but I fear it's one of those projects that the artist makes it look so easy, but it's really not...lol. I'm pretty sure I could slather a balloon....and cut cardboard....but it's your ability to work with these materials so NEATLY, that really brings it all together.

Hello, I tried to make one of these houses and my paper clay came out full of lumps and no matter what I did it was bumpy all around it. Instead of just tossing it in the trash I went full ahead and made it to look like it was done in dirt and rocks. My painting needs a lot more practice but I am happy with the final look. Thank you for sharing your talents with me.
really? wish we could see what you did too. I want to try one of this tutorial but too scared of the final look. I don't want to achieve the perfect result for first time of course but something relatively close would make me really happy. congrats on your success though!
@@gmp8613 thank you for these very nice words. Today I needed something positive today. I wish I could post a picture because it did turn out nicely. I did not do the under parts but did put feet under it. Now for a bit of surprising news for it is I thought I grabbed the flour but instead I grabbed cornmeal. After I had it all made up I thought it felt wrong. Then my wife tells me I used cornbread meal. It is strong and no cracks which I was very happy about.

I have already started another one and will be using your other videos to try more. I can say, this is not a two day project. If you don't mind me asking, what brand of PVA are you using?
Yours is very thick, it looks like sour cream or yogurt while mine (Elmer's Glue All) is very thin and runny.
I have heard of people letting batches of glue sit out to thicken and I am curious if this is what you are doing or are you adding something or if the brand you are using is just thicker.

I really like your videos, it's a great way to re-purpose cardboard and eggcrates.
ps, if you ask the produce person in your market, they usually have a lot of these paper pulp dividers that they use for apples and other fruits that they usually just throw away and they work just as well as egg crates. The only caveat, they are usually purple, so you may have to paint your project white after everything dries.
