In the vedas different caste are supposed to be different parts of "God" and those who people thought were untouchables were actually supposed to be the feet(Isn't touching people's feet a thing in Hinduism). It was somewhat needed in those days as they didn't have schools. So you usually had to learn whatever you can from your parents. Suddenly a Brahmin started to feel like he was superior than the rest of the castes and so on. It's the people's fault.

It was supposed to be based on their occupation not on their birth, as there are many examples in Mahabharata and Ramayana. Some of these are _ namkaran I.e giving name to the new born baby , annaprashan I.e rice ceremony and so on till last right I.e shradh. When u study vedas and puran's you will become a bipra And lastly when u will have brahmma gyan I.e when you can recognize your inner god you will become a brahmin. Ultimately everything is based on your karma that's why krishan said in the Bhagwad geta that Chaturvaran Moya sristo Guna karmena Bhivageshu. Can anyone tell how a person can be a "non hindu" if we go by Tharoor's idea of Hinduism? Hinduism doesn't prohibit a hindu from rejecting all hindu gods and scriptures. It doesn't prohibit a hindu from accepting Jesus as the Son of God, or the believing in Trinity. It doesn't forbid a hindu from believing that Mohammed is the messenger of God and that Allah alone is to be worshipped. So, any human being no matter what his beliefs or actions are remains a Hindu as per Tharoor's argument.

Chaturvaran Moya sristo Guna karmena Bhivageshu. Which means varna I.e caste system is fully based on the karma and your qualities.

Can anyone tell how a person can be a "non hindu" if we go by Tharoor's idea of Hinduism?
Hinduism doesn't prohibit a hindu from rejecting all hindu gods and scriptures.
It doesn't prohibit a hindu from accepting Jesus as the Son of God, or the believing in Trinity.
It doesn't forbid a hindu from believing that Mohammed is the messenger of God and that Allah alone is to be worshipped.
So, any human being no matter what his beliefs or actions are remains a Hindu as per Tharoor's argument.

Everyone born in this world is a hindu, what I mean away from God. That is why God invites them to come out & choose Life. Jesus said I am the way, the truth & life, no one comes to the father (God) except thru me.
People all over the world adopt it. So it will be unfair to deny them the right to call themselves a Hindu.

This is Hinduism! If I have to called it any other name fine. What Hindu represents is the life that I want to live and let others live how they want to live without disturbance of peace and creating violence and damage to the root cause. If someone does harm to the function of this life then I have to act, protect and fight. It's my darma not influenced by an institution or following any faith. For that one has to travel with-in search god with-in.

He is expressing a brand of Hinduism that our generation grew up with in middle class homes and liberal parents and catholic schooling where diction was more valued than denomination and Sanskrit was a tiresome subject and the Gita was nowhere at home and too esoteric to fathom...a brand of Hinduism in urban apartments and material comforts. The lived faith in small towns and villages is getting a voice now and we the urban well heeled are cringing in discomfort. Yes there is a book...yes there is a creed. Yes there are prayers and yes there are rituals. But we follow them when our parents pass on...

@@davidmakhija8860 and yes karna was not taught by dronacharya not only because of his caste but also because of other things....most importantanly lord krishna in gita said "gurukarma vibhagashah" which means caste according to qualities and not birth..like based on properties elements are classified ...ram was ksatriya and Ravan was brahmin but who do we worship? Vidura was a sudra but was respected for knowledge. Rama ate fruits tasted by shabari (of so called low caste)..
