Imho, it's best to start by copying others with the goal of eventually not sounding like anyone. I watched an interview with Ed O'Brien from Radiohead yesterday, and he was saying that both of the interviewers were more skilled guitar players than him. Yet, he plays to tens of thousands of people at a time, and their job was to interview him! I think the difference was in some things he said more than once: "We in Radiohead just made it our goal to not sound like anything else," and "I play for a feeling, not for a sound." He also talked about seeking discomfort in front of an audience. I think these three things are the exact opposite of tons of other players.
    1. Try to sound different.
    2. Play for a feeling, not for "perfection."
    3. Show weakness.
    I'd add #4: Be patient!!!!

    • @visitur4914
      @visitur4914 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

PS He also said practice is good. He wasn't trying to be all punk, like "skill doesn't matter." He said you have to put in time, but maybe in a different way than you'd expect. Like, "put in time" doing those three things I posted above.

I’m surprised how often I hear other musicians verbally destroy other musicians that are in a tribute band or aren’t playing original music. I have learned so many cool little tricks, techniques, licks, etc. I’ve probably learned just as much copying somebody else’s technique as I have from lessons or music theory and it all has subconsciously evolved my playing.

Great video Mike. Couldn't agree more. Doesn't it really come down to asking ones self, "why do I play guitar?" If you answer that by saying because I want to sound like Warren DeMartini then go ahead do what you need to do to get as close as you can and take it as a compliment when someone says "wow, you sound just like Warren DeMartini." On the other hand if you're playing because the guitar is the instrument you choose to get all the "art" you have flowing inside of you out of you before you go insane that in itself is awesome as well. It might not sound like anything anyone has heard before and that's cool because your not needing it to. You just have to have a release for what is burning inside of you dying to get out. Just my 2 cents.

You are amazing, Mike. Already said it, but can't say it enough, your mental lessons made my progress far more than all technical lessons on youtube:)
Yes, as the years go by, every goddamn thing matters, even a pick size from 0.60 to 0.70 makes different sound. Every string gauge, your sound when shifting amp in different club or stage, or just change a position in a rehearsal room, make you feel different:)
If you know what sound you are chasing, when you find it, you won't recognize your self:)

I think my playing is a good mix of all my guitar inspirations, but I never really go chasing tone like crazy, so I have my own sound, sometimes i'll play licks that sound like something that Page, other times Blackmore, maybe Garcia would play: depending on how i'm feeling.Sometimes I go into phases. Recently I've been trying to play more Robert Fripp/Steve Hackett sounding stuff, but come up with something new that's influenced by them. I think many guitarists can agree with me.

Once I get the chord changes down smoothly & learn more techniques.
I will be able to have fun writing my own music.

Bass player here.... For the first few years I wanted to sound and play like Geddy Lee, without much success I might add. Then one day I wrote this lick that I was so impressed with, sounded just like a Geddy Lee riff, Only needed like 15 more for a song  about two weeks later Rush releases Signals and guess who wrote the riff to New World Man. Well it was at that point I walked away from playing or trying to play Rush songs from that point until many years later I never even played a rush song live with a band or even learned another one. I branched out big time at that point with players who were great but more of what I could play well. You know in the pocket and with a average drummer. It was at that point I started to gain my own style.

I remember a long time ago, when I was just playing for two or three years and I stopped for a few months, I was in engineering school at the time, I wanted to play with the school band, and I remember I was challenged by a guitar player who played very fast leads and felt very frustrated because I could not do it at that time, and at the same time I did not really like the way he played with all alternate picked notes, I did not like his tone. I was ashamed to not be able to follow what he was playing, he asked me to do a solo on my own after he made me feel very bad, I did some kind of bluesy stuff that came to my mind with pull off, hammers and bends and he asked me how I did this. I redid the lick and he could not do it like me. I felt strange because I really thought I sucked and I really did very basic stuff.
Now I can play the kind of licks he was doing, it was just I needed experience, practice and technics. I remember some years ago I found a channel like yours with a tutorial explaining how to play Gary Moore "still got the blues", I really learned great things about how the solo was built, but I am not Gary Moore, so I tried to make the theme sound good to my ears, and improvise a bit on it on part I really could not match Gary's playing, and I really remember the advices from the guy who did the tutorial, saying to listen to yourself when you play this kind of stuff, to make it your own and make it sound in your own way. And I remember playing the tune to a friend who plays lot of instruments including the guitar and he told me "how can you play this? I can't play this tune without sounding like a dead cat. How do you do this vibrato with your ring and middle fingers?". I think this is part of the style of someone that can't be really emulated.

But I do have to say one thing that sets me apart already is I utilize my left hands muting capabilities a lot, like as example: A String Power chord I press the string using the part closer to the pad of my index finger and at the same time mute the low E. So no annoying open E ringing out and unintentionally ruining your sound.

Yes, if there was a database with us playing and we took just a few seconds of us playing an accurate algorithm would match us up in a fraction of a second - better than a fingerprint.

I've never thought of sounding like someone, even when I started playing. I always wanted to play just like me, not as something that I like and hear. Also, I have more original pieces (more than 20) than songs from bands that I know to play (less than 15); because of dificult solos and some confusing riffs I find easier to create something than learning what I hear - and I listen to very dificult and complex things. Like, some of my riffs are thrashy, my “solos” are slow but there's some tremolo and (easy) tapping, some pieces are in major scale even it's heavy metal... I don't know. I listen to power and thrash metal and prog, mainly, but I'm just knowing classic stuff.

When they start to tell you that make sure you can trust them. Most will just say stuff to say stuff. Find someone whom's opinion you trust and give them your blessing to tell you what they think of your playing. Sometimes what they tell you they don't like about your playing is exactly what you were trying to accomplish to reach your own personal goals. Main thing is to be true to yourself first, let others think what they want. You can't please everyone.
