9. Learn to Downpick fast and consistently this hides just how long I've been playing extremely well and once you learn how to downpick *BOOM* you now know how to play the entire Metallica discography

Can you do a video on how someone can start getting into the gig scene? I'm 17 now and have been playing for almost a year and I've practiced quite a bit. I'm not exactly ready for gigs and stuff, but when I turn 18, I really want to get experience out there, and I have no idea how/where to start. I don't have a band, I don't have friends that, I'm gonna be blunt, are good at any instrument, so I have no one to start with. Also about how to find and book for beginners, and maybe a checklist of things to do to get ready before a gig to make everything goes as smooth as possible. And also advice on how to actually get your name out there in order to get more gigs, or even find bands that are looking for players. Thanks

Wow I can relate! I'm 17 too and have been playing guitar since 8 and people our age in this generation rarely listen to metal or even play an instrument especially in my country(I live in Singapore and the price of guitars are ridiculously expensive) I had the chance to perform at a relative's wedding when I was 10 and then I didn't perform afterwards. I feel like my skills are washed down the drain. I hope you can form a band soon!

the King of the Hill thene song is one of my favorite go-tos to impress non-players...it's not hard, but not too easy, and tends to sound 'harder' than it actually is, and reminds me that we can noodle on the bass strings, too.
step 1 : learn every mode and scales for one key
step 2 : only play songs in that key
step 3 : stonks
4:30 No Excuses is a good example of that chord shape/type

My personal top 5:
1) Have at least one unusual instrument like i. e. a 12 string, a roundback, a fretless or an acoustic bass
2) Make sure there are gadgets like string packs, capos, tuners, picks and cables everywhere around you
3) Rant regularly about people who play riffs ore wanna hear them
4) Have your stuff imported from locations not even your geography teacher ever heard about
5) Change your left hand's position to upper side of the neck and back while playing
6) Own at least one crappy amp

I just play the intro to “Nothing Else Matters” and then throw the guitar down like I just set it on fire

Lol I remember being 11 years old, no internet, no teachers, just watched live shows on tv with my dads old acoustic and attempting to mimic their hands. My dad was so impressed he bought me my first electric guitar, a squire bullet. Only then I learned everything taught in this video by the age of 13. And ever since, it’s been quite the ride. I would consider myself pretty good now having 14 years of playing under my belt. I love music! Nice video! This is such a great tool for beginners. If only when I was a kid this was available. Kudos brotha!! And for all the beginners, DONT GIVE UP! It takes great patience. Much love!

You forgot the one you start off with where you hide your tuner and make it look like you can tune by ear.
SayWhat? I tune by a few riffs from different songs. Opening riff to Redemption song, opening rift to BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! Opening rift to Folsom Prison blues and the other rift in Folsom Prison blues. All fun songs to play for beginners and that's how I tune my guitar.

I like to tweak my A string a bit to make the inverted power chord sound right.
The unforgiven is the perfect beginner guitar lesson. Teaches leads, chords, fingerstyle, solo, power chords, open string riffs, bending, pull off, hammer on, pentatonic, triads. Everything is in there.

Great video. For any beginner iron maiden fans check out the main riff on the track Flash of the Blade from Powerslave. It's all on the one string D and is just hammering a pattern on open, 7,8 and 10 frets. I came across it almost by accident and was so stoked to play a riff by my favourite band.
I am amazed @ how you teach! U know the guitar & not just the instrument...u get ppl too. Thats so obvious. I have watched u for such a long time...but it seems as if anytime I have a question about s/t or if I am working on a riff & have an issue w/ it, you will put up a video that answers it WHILE playing the very riff that I am currently working on. its wild how i remember all this when I started (90s like you, i relate so hard to your BACK IN MY DAY videos lol). so now im just realizing that these are things all self taught guitarists figured out. these kept us playing and i bet a lot of us built how we play guitar around these.
i think its great you use these with students. im sure its kept a lot of kids interested in continuing with guitar. being able to sound good when you're just starting is the best motivation.

I'd also recommend adding a load of reverb onto whatever you're playing, it helps to cover up mistakes

Great vid dude. I would class myself as intermediate level and have still learned a good few things from this lesson. When I get the "play something" I almost always go with sweet child o mine as I learned the whole intro very early on. Keep up the good work. Perhaps if you do a similar vid in the future baybe add a couple of the simple Black Sabbath rifs as they can sound very decent for a beginner?
The anchor chords are everywhere. Even Sammy Hagar’s Where Eagles Fly is the G, C, and D shapes. He also moves the Dsus up and down the neck a few frets to play the bridge. He just moves his pinky up and down a couple of frets during that bridge, too. I think 1/3 - 1/2 of More Than Words uses those, as well.
One of my favourite things to use a capo for is playing the day that never comes with a capo on the second fret. It doesn't really help the distorted guitar riffs but the clean riffs sound insanely good imo

#9 The right tone/gain level for the piece you are playing...this is HUGE. You can't play Eruption with a clean tone and you can't play Stairway with a dirty tone. Set yourself up with at least 3 core tones...clean, rhythm, and lead.
#10 Use delay for lead stuff, especially if you are newer. Don't swamp it out, give it some girth and wings though to fill in the gaps. And when Christmas is over and everyone goes home, turn the delay down so you don't cheat yourself by filling in the gaps. Work on your technique fairly dry, so when you add the delay again, it sounds like it should.
Lol you are going to need a clean and a dirty tone to play the entirety of stairway to Heaven. Like a lot of zeppelin songs they start out as acoustic and transition to dirty electric. The contrast btw the two is very effective. If you can’t switch you will be limited. You need an overdrive pedal or a 2 channel amp you can switch the gain on and off easily.

Bro thats crazy! I've been doing all of these techniques you've just mentioned! My two first theme songs I played was Terminator and the Godfather. When I learned Am I Evil by Metallica I moved power chords around with the same palm muting. It has made me better and I've learned alot just messing around.
I was hooked within 10 seconds with this line: "I remember when I was younger." EVERYTHING you remember was when you were younger.

When I first starting teaching myself how to tap after watching videos, which I guess isnt really teaching yourself, I thought it sounded like shit, but it sounded a lot like that, just not as fast. I only learned smoke on the water and Randys opening riff to crazy train. I wasnt quit able to master them before I quit playing. But now I wanna start back up and try again. Rocksmith is a Godsend.

At the time I had been learning guitar, I couldn't play much but I had been practicing playing Led Zep's, black dog none stop for about 3 months solid.
