THE IDES OF MARCH Vehicle REACTION

True story: Back in the 90s, I worked with the drummer for the group Survivor, who had the hit "Eye of the Tiger." I saw his gold record and held his Grammy, so I knew he was the real deal. One day, Vehicle came on the radio and I started singing along with it, and to my absolute delight, this guy starts drumming along with the song, and I was like Omg, I'm singing with the drummer from Survivor (!) and when the song was over, I exclaimed, "Wow, I can't believe you know that song, too!" and he said, "Yeah... I was also the drummer for the Ides of March." And you could have knocked me over with a feather.
Jim Peterik, the singer and guitarist of The Ides of March, founded Survivor and wrote "Eye of the Tiger" as well.
Great story Jane. That was cool to read. 👍
I met Jim Peterik when I was working at Whole Foods in 2018. He came in with his purple hair and was donned in all leather, of course. I helped him with something, but I can't remember...we were busy talking about The Beatles....💙
Awesome story and what a killer memory!!!
How lucky you are and what a great story. Of all the one hit gems of the divine 70s, this song may be my favorite. They literally "out brassed" Chicago on this one. And BTW, I adore Chicago. And big horns.
The voice reminds me so much of Blood Sweat and Tears
Due to the distinctive horn riffs, Ides of March, were often mistaken for Blood Sweat and Tears.
This song is about a girl who used a man for transportation, when he realizes it's more than about the ride. Lol
Fantastic band with just a great melody,
sensational vocals and the horns that take over the the front position. Great memory. Knew you'd love it. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and John. 👏 👏
Cheers from Canada.🇨🇦
He sounds more like David Clayton-Thomas than David does!
That song still rocks! Even better now!
Absolutely love this song! It was an immediate hit when it came out in 1970 and still is! Thanks Harri!
One of three songs every high school band played in the early 70s-the others were Cliff Nobles-The Horse and the band Chase-Get It On.
OMG !! I saw Ides of March LIVE in Erie, Pennsylvania back in 1971. They were so good, the HORNS!!! and dancing on the stage that by the time they sang Vehicle at the end the whole audience was so pumped. I was 19 or 20 then. Boy, we had great music. This band was a one-hit wonder, but what a hit! ty, ty, for reacting to this
One of the all time exciting songs. Love it.
Dr Harri delivers another winning prescription !
I forgot how much I love this song. Nowadays, the lyrics might seem a little intense, but it does send a message to that lady.
What a great classic!!! Nice pick John Chu. Those were the days Harri. 😀😀😀
Harri- now watch Leonid and Friends perform it! Vassily kills on this vocal! 🌹
Jim Peterik the singer, wrote this tune. then went on to start a band called Survivor, in which he co-wrote the monster hit "Eye of The Tiger" which was the theme song in the original Rocky movie. Peterik has co-written songs for 38 Special ("Rockin' into the Night",, "Hold On Loosely and "Caught Up in You"), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackhawk, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar ("Heavy Metal"), Cathy Richardson, Dennis DeYoung, Van Zant, Brian Wilson, REO Speedwagon, and The Beach Boys
He also co-wrote with the group called Chase.
I was a drummer in my high school band and we played this as a march, and it was a huge success…. I’ve always loved this song. Such beautiful brass sounds.
John fabulous choice
My parents loved it
I love it
My kids love it
Brings great memories
Great reaction Harri
Ides of March ON THE IDES OF MARCH!!!! Well played Harri! The purple haired Jim Peterek at his bet.
HA! Was that intentional, I wonder.
I saw the Ides of March in the 70's in Algonquin IL. Thank you Harri and John.
This is “ BLUE EYED “ Funk and Soul !!!!
Great choice John..one of my all time favorites. Right in my wheelhouse. Good reaction Harri. 👍🙃🇬🇧🤴🇺🇸🇨🇦
One of my favorites!! This song definitely hits strong!!! ❤ My only complaint is that it’s too short 😂
On March 15, 2024 - Ides of March celebrated their 60th Anniversary in Chicago western suburbs.
ALL 4 members are still Alive !!
-
Jim Peterick was lead composer for Survivor and gave compositions to 38 Special.
-
Two other “Horn section” bands from that era:
Lighthouse (Canada, 13-piece group) and
Bill Chase’s band - Chase (sadly he died in 1975 plane crash).
They played at high school dances on the Southside when I attended. Along with bands like TW4, later known as Styx, the American Breed, the Cryin’ Shames, & the Buckinghams. What a time to be young!✌️❤️🎶
One of my favorite songs from that time period. A true classic
The horn section is alot like Chicago! GREAT!!!! And the guitar solo!🔥👍
A fantastic rendition of this song is done by Leonid and friends live in the studio,
This is such a great song, very appropriate too, since today IS the Ides Of March, March 15th! ✌️🎶💙
You’re absolutely right on with that. I remember high school bands playing this in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and beyond.
Excellent driving song 🚗. The song gets your blood pumping!
Thank you 💖🎵
LOVE IT!!!! LOVE IT !!!
One of the greatest song's ever
Played this song when I was in a band back in the 70s 80s.
It's a blast playing this live, isn't it?
I was working with a horn band just 20 years ago, and this one was still a crowd-pleaser...
@@lisarainbow9703 I had a ball. Miss those band days.
Yeah great song, remember the band well. I had a black car and a friend started calling me the friendly stranger with the black sedan. He lived in a town North of East Chicago, thus the name.
You should see Leonid & Friends cover of this - awesome, as you can imagine!
John Chu, you have pulled up another great one. I guess I never knew who did this because I am very familiar with the song but never heard of the band. I actually thought it was Three Dog Night 😂. Thanks for continuing to educate me. Harri also was thinking like me. 🌺✌️
Hi John, I was 13 when this came out and my memory of it is lying in bed at night with my cheap transistor radio under the pillow listening to night time Radio Luxembourg on Medium Wave playing songs like this. It was their only hit, wasn't it?
Harri compared them to early Chicago; Blood, Sweat and Tears and Credence Clearwater Revival. My comparisons would be similar although instead of CCR, I would have Three Dog Night. That was a great time to be alive. As always, thank you.
My pleasure, Paul!
They had another lesser hit called "L.A. Goodbye" in 1971. I liked it, but it had a much more mellow sound.
This is the theme song of bad assery!!!!
This is a driving the car on an early summer day song. It is way high on my favorites list. A+
Was the first song, (I was 13 then) of a so called "Jazz-Rock band" with horns....next were Chicago. Later this singer was with the band Survivor (Eye of a tiger), Jim Peterik ! Loved this song so much.
I saw Ides of Mark a couple of times. When Jim Peterik did the guitar break on Vehicle, he did a chorus girl style reverse kick across the stage, never missing a note. Ides of March were an exciting band to see.
I never knew who sang this, but recognize it, of course.
Thanks for this John I love this song and think Harri did too.
Thanks Cynthia!
You have to watch a video of them from recent years singing it live. Fantastic!!!!
Oh so right on with this one Harri, because sometimes the music or song just draws out of you what the writers and performers wanted to and this one is definitely one of those. God Bless Mate from Across the Pond in Tx🤠
This song 👌🏽 Harri’s take on the song 👌🏽
Haven't heard this for a while but it's great. Thanks John and Harri.
Classic, the band was out of Chicago Illinois and it was a huge hit.
It's funny-the song came out when I was 5. I loved it then, and I haven't changed my mind.
And I love the way the guitar solo pans right and left.
Arguably the best song on the long list titled One-Hit Wonders!
This is another of those great one-hit wonder from 1970. I remember when this song was very popular. According to the writer Jim Peterik, the song is about a girl that often used him for her mode of transportation, leading him to surmise that he was little more than her "vehicle". Peterik later on founded the rock group "Survivor" (1982 hit "Eye Of The Tiger") & became an extremely successful songwriter.
Another one of my home town (Chicago) favorites.
They did a great job 👏 great live band
So much energy 🔥🔥
Always loved this song, so many memories from my teenage years
This is a top-down in the convertible, volume as high as you turn it up and sing-along! Love this song!
Good memories. Went to high school with those guys. 😎
Definitely has always given me BS&T vibes.
I remember this song well, I thought it was a cool tune, still do. Thanks Harri
I love singing along with this song
The soundtrack of my life has this one way up there!
Awesome song choice! Makes my playlist any day.
Big horns powerful melody and song. Chicago started the trend of using a big brass sound and picked up by this group, by Lighthouse and other groups. Love big horn songs.
Check out a group called Chase. Leader was Bill Chase and they had one song that made the charts called, Get It On. 70s Brass.
They were from the Chicago area around the same time as the band Chicago.
If you like Vehicle, you'll love their song "SUPERMAN" ...similar energy and great vocals!
The best! Amazing it gives me the chills!
Fantastic classic. Leonid & Friends does an amazing cover, to which 'Ides of March' posted a comment that they thought it was themselves when they heard it!
I thought they had commented on it, but I couldn't find it when I went there just now. Great cover, yes. (Edit) I found it. When I first went there, I thought Jim Paterek had logged it under his own name.
I remembered where I heard this song, from the movie Prison in the lead with Sylvester Stallone, good memories.
Jim Peterik was the music producer on a number of Sylvester Stallone films.
This song comes on and you immediately have to reach for the volume and turn it up.
I gave up asking for this song. Glad you're doing it's a fantastic song.
Great god in Heaven I love this song 😂🔥
My first live concert. I saw them twice. Gerat memories.
The drive of this song makes me want to jump in my "vehicle" and go on a long road trip!
Don't know if anyone noticed, but this video was posted today, March 15., 2023. Coinicidence??? Don't think so!!! Well played, Harri!!!
Julius Caesar died on this day 3/15 BST's were a Great band with so many hits.
Great record! Cool stories here! College bands in the US played the crap out of this! Chicago-esque!
Still do, at least when the alumni take over at the basketball games when the varsity band is on winter break
Harri, there is a great live version on their channel "Ides of March Official" that I'm sure you'd like.
Another band called CHASE and song GOT TO GET IT ON...LIVE should be reacted to as great horn section and soulful singing ,also from Chicago area !!
Timely reaction considering it is the ides of March today!!!
Beware the Ides of March
I bought that 45 record for a dollar when I was in high school😅😅😅 Young man
Love it, remember it fondly
They have a Blood Sweat and Tears vibe to me.
Harry I’m not sure what the space rocket images are meant to convey but I think it might be a phallic symbol. 😂
th-cam.com/video/GhlIrPHzQ5E/w-d-xo.html. The link to a new songs with the Ides of March & Mark Farner the lean vocalist, guitarist, keyboard player, harmonica & wrote 92% of their material. Tricked by his Highschool buddy during their very successful reunion tour in the late 90's. Becoming one of the Top 100 grossing tours in either 98 or 99, unheard of for reunion bands. He told Mark it was an Umbrella legal protection for the band. Which having their first manager who robbed them blind, got them in hot water with the IRS. In reality it took away Mark's ownership of the trademark. Mark's a loving man, who just doesn't think like that & thought he was his friend. With Mark's early 20's something son a a quadriplegic on life support & with him being the age he was Mark couldn't insure him. Don prevented Mark from using Formerly of Grand Funk in his advertising, W/O Mark's writing, came of a stage & soulful, powerful voice, there'd have been no Grand Funk. He'd always had it in his contract that it had to be 1/4 the size of Mark Farner, so the fans knew who they'd be seeing. Mark could've returned the move by banning them their use of his songs, again that's just not who Mark. In the Video he's at least 72. Mark's new video "Never & always" shows he's still got it from his voice to writing. A singer multiple musician, who played his songs from 1975 till cancer & treatment put an end to my quest to return to work, & have music occupy the #1 career path. I'd fronted a classic rock Top 40 variety band & opened for the Gatlin Brothers & they spoke to the promoter, & telling him we should've been the band right before them, as we'd won the crowd over & complicated my voice. I had a choice of 2 exits & missed them, but if was still nice to hear. We'd used several 50's & 60's hits that'd had recent remakes. I had to lug my 2 channel amp with 2 12 inch Scorpion speakers. We could use their amps but couldn't move 1 knob. Going from Roy Orbison to Van Halen &
Bob Dylan to Gun's & roses to name a couple including finishing the event with 2 from Grand Funk "Some kinda wonderful' ,& 'Closer to home' the full version a bit shorter since I didn't want to hassle with my keyboard for one song. When Mark did the song in the video he was around 70, should you review it, it's a great song & video & again he's as good as ever. The tune with Idea of March is also a great song & video. Mark's worked with many others, including a 2 year run with Ringo Starr's All-star band with Billy Preston RIP, the Who's bass player John Entwistle another RIP, Randy Bachman, of the Guess who, BTO & solo efforts, Felix Cavalier of the Rascals. Ringo called him Mr Grand Funk. There are songs on TH-cam of that mix of All-Starrs. Billy & Mark had a great groove together. Course every one worked great together. For the last 30 years Mark's had a Black American on Drums ,& bass. With Mark's undeniable soulful voice & groove. Hope to see you review 'Swagger' Love your channel & reviews, keep up the great work & Thanks for the hours & hours of entertainment Ric Cottrell
A great band out of the Chicago area
a funky B-S-T and Chicago mashup
Great song, saludos friend desde México :)
This is the music video where MTV got it's famous into.
great song
Leonid and friends also cover this song.
when this first came out I thought it was Tom Jones! lol
Nice sweater!
This band really wanted to be Blood Sweat & Tears.
Why? Jim Peterik has a far better voice than David Clayton-Thomas, and IOM were a superior band to BST.
There is no song on this channel I don’t know by heart! When there are drums in the song the band has to be TIGHT.
A song you wouldn’t dare sing at a pizza karaoke bar…many kids might think you’re no good
Credence Clearwater Revival?
Hi Hari, Very poor re-mix of this song. So sorry they gave you this one. Great song though! ;)
Ok I’m 14 again!!
CCR not a good comparison. Maybe the band Lighthouse is best comparison.
UHMMMMM did no one catch all the sexual overtone of the words and the visuals! Watch and listen again,
Harri, that had to be the most spot on synopsis of this song! ❤
Yes, love this song so much! Tom Jones did a good cover of this.
