Good job man. What was the mileage when the tensioner failed? Need to do the same thing on my c450, just a preventative maintenance. But E class seems to have more more than C. Did you replace any of the pulleys? I saw another video removing the charge pipes, move intercooler close to the radiator and then do the job, but yours is equally difficult and will try out.

Thanks! ~104k mi. I didn't change any other pulleys. Just the tensioner and the belt. I tried to loosen the charge pipes for the intercooler, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

At 5:08, you used a 1/4 ratchet with a small extension to 3/8th, but which e-torx bit did you use if you remember to loosen/tighten the tensioner?

I think it was an e12. E10 or e12. I got the whole set from amazon or Harbour freight.

Thanks! I’m going to try to toss on a new tensioner, as well as replace the idler/drive pulleys soon. Getting things prepared now. Belt hasn’t snapped yet, but preventative maintenance is my aim.

Tons of good info here! Can you drop a link to those sockets that fit in the 3/4 wrench?

That set I've had for something like 20 yrs. I bought it from Autozone back in the day. I don't think the company makes them anymore, but they are called Ampro Go-thru Hex Geared sockets. There may be other variants out there though. Look up Ampro T45810. That set could work.

I'm still confuse on how you got the belt back on behind the intercooler. Without taking the intercooler out. There is not enough clearance to get your hand behind the intercooler. I know this because I replace the Crankcase vent line that goes under the Intake manifold and the Intake manifold gasket.

@A.Musa76 There is enough clearance to get a hand there but not far. You get the belt in by fishing it through. Without trying to route it around the pullies. Just one person fish the belt behind the intercooler and the other person grab it. Once you can grab the belt from both sides, start routing around the pullies starting with the alternator and water pump then go around the ac compressor, tensioner then crankshaft pully.

@@Toneydark I was so worried about if I can wrap the belt around the crank pulley did not see much clearance since the crank pulley (Belt pulley/vibration damper) is behind the Intercooler. I take a look back there again to see if there is enough clearance to wrap the belt around this pulley without touching the intercooler. Thanks.

I attempted it and had to cut the old belt off it got snag on behind the crank pulley. After an hour and half I got it on. The hardest part is getting the belt onto the crank pulley.

With the right tools and a second set of hands to fish out the old belt and fish in the new one, about 2 hours.
