    Stumbled on this video but so glad I found it. This is the exact advice and mentorship that's needed. I come from the perspective as someone who's already 10 years graduated from an Associates in Animation (Art Institute if curious) who's never worked in a studio, and very little to show from an internship that lasted less than 6mo. I feel like a bird who's gotten their feathers too wet, and has sat on the ground for too long, and therefore can no longer take to flight. I've had free internships turn me down.
    I do try to be mindful of noticing areas of weakness in my portfolio to strengthen, but it's challenging to create for a career you've never formally been in. It would be amazing to hear your future perspective for those who never got off the ground and now at risk of staying flightless.

    Thanks for giving us the insight some of us beginner level artists should be aiming for when seeking a start on our career. I think something we don't realise is exactly what kind of work would be expect of us when applying for a junior art position. Even though we want to show off our unique takes on character and creature design, the ability to make little things like backdrops, props and other little details is just as important!

    Wow, what an uplifting ending. I always beat myself up for creating worldbuilding for my own little passion projects... as if I can't use all those prop, creature, and location designs in a portfolio.
    I have to say, I am pretty caught between going for illustration or getting into concept art. Both have grind, but different flavors of grind.
    Once I'm out of school, I hope to actually begin the process of building a portfolio. For now I am just trying to build up art to actually put in those portfolios.

    I am walking in this fine line of character design and illustration as a freelancer. Even though at the end of the day, an illustration is always the end result. Most of the work i am currently getting is about illustrating a persons character from a Tabletop game they are playing, like DnD, Pathfinder... So it most of time only comes with a general text idea of what the character looks like, so i always try do come up with different design ideas and see which one the client likes best and then i go from there, besides also including background work. Other times, it is about making illustrations of the client´s original characters, so they already have the design, so i work on illustrating it.
    It is very challenging because getting work is very uncertain, there are months where i got only 1, and right the next month a half dozen. You can never know in this field being a small creator, but i am very glad to be able to do it anyway, and i know if i keep at it i´ll eventually have bigger reach.

    Hi Tyler, thanks for this content! I just graduated from my 3D Animation major (Where I live the industry is very small, so you learn from concept art to 3D) It has really been a challenge for me and a bit sad too, finding opportunities in the industry. Your videos have helped me grow, learn to criticize myself and seek the opinion of others. Your channel has really helped me improve and have a clearer image of the industry. Even though everything looks gray and sad right now because I definitely get constantly rejected, constantly improving makes me happy somehow. Sometimes I'm not going to lie, that the panorama gets very sad and it's impossible not to feel with "imposter syndrome" Before entering my career, I studied another career or artistic and many times (in sad moments, of course) I think "Why not I dedicated myself to that?" I know the answer and it is that this is what I like, in what I want to grow professionally and I will fight for it even if everything goes wrong. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us :)

    Thank you for sharing a little window into what entry work should look like. Im currently freelancing and thinking very hard about how to construct a portfolio for the kind of work I want to do. This gives me a very good idea, thank you! I do have a couple of stories I can world build for and documenting it in the way you've shown at the end with your student seems totally viable. I believe you have a list on your patreon of how many images is ideal so I'll refer to that for some structure.
    I described to my wife yesterday that this phase of art making feels like I've made it out past the asteroid belt and now I'm floating in the void, unlimited choices but no clear direction. Seems like you've got a pretty cool space station set up so I'll have to stop there for awhile 👍. Thanks again for all the work you put in to sharing resources for developing artists like myself, I really appreciate it!

    I’ve a design background but ended up developing a professional career in a different industry. About 4 years ago I decided to transition back into art and have been training, retraining and refreshing my fundamentals to become a concept artist.
    A year ago I started to build a portfolio and I am at a point where I want to be very careful when it comes to the kind of portfolio artwork I want to invest my time on.

    Thank you so much!

    You put it really nicely about stumbling upon work and finding your own path, I did it similarly too. What I find now is that all freelance offers I get and also my full time work are asking me to do more concept art than illustration and I like to see myself as an illustrator, I really enjoy rendering and adding details, matching light, finding right values etc. Exploring for concept art usually bring me unease, I feel incompetent and not sure where we are going with the pieces and spend most of hours hating work, so I am not sure why clients when find my portfolio thinks that I will be perfect for their game concepting phase.

    • @An.Unsought.Thought
      @An.Unsought.Thought 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending on the studio, like if its newer or more indie, I've heard that even they have a hard time discerning concept art from illustration. So if they are working on their first game, they are used to seeing almost final renderings of characters or environments and they just assume they can give stuff like that to their 3D modelers. I'm sure the 3D modelers make due with that but its almost like they end up skipping a lot of the concept phase (specifically from what you would see from a jr concept artist and concept artist) and only having the types of stuff you would see an art director do. So it could be that perhaps?

    • @MILICRAFT
      @MILICRAFT 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@An.Unsought.Thought Yes it may be that when they see nice image they think it will look good in their game not realizing that the process to get there is different for concept art and illustration.

    I see so many great artists out there , some of them without a job even though they are more skilled than me, I am not so young anymore , breaking into the industry seems incredibly tough. I might as well just learn to make games and end up making conceptart for these projects but even that is something there is barely time for. I need nanobots laced with time crystals to make me immortal so I have time to pursue everything

    • @TylerEdlin84

      Yeah because of the high number of artists out there it’s really more of game of persistence and your network of friends. It’s not really about who’s the best anymore.

      I think it seems like there's a lot of artist because art is everywhere let's say there are 10k artist which we know there's more of course but hypothetically let's say there are 10k if 10k each put out 1000+ pieces it's gonna seem like more because I guarantee there's still a need for artist there always will be even tho artificial intelligence is becoming popular and things like that we still as artist it's our job to push boundaries so don't give up because it seems like a lot cause in reality it isn't you just have to teach yourself Learn everything you can possibly learn from watching videos like these and learn how to manage your time and your strengths and weaknesses essentially create an art school for yourself then after that consider weather you want to actually attend art school or not then the rest is history 😊

      Hi! I'm also in the beginning, I mean, I'm still developing my fundamentals skills, but I already figured out a lot of things, and what is helping me a lot is taking feedback from art communities. I do some paintings and ask specific questions like "there is something wrong with the shadows, can someone help me know what?" Cuz if you just ask for general feedback, people might be uncertain about what to tell you and rather ignore you.

      This is the 6th time I've tried posting an answer here, TH-cam keeps deleting them. I guess it didn't like me dropping 15 different names of artists, courses & schools so I'll try a different approach. Search 10 best online art schools/courses to get you started. There are a ton of resources out there, just do your research and look into the instructor before putting down any serious money. Wish YT would allow me to list some for you, but alas.

      I always look at artists I admire, current or already dead. From the realistic paintings to the impressionists. Or from the traditional mediums to digital. Find a few artists portfolios that show a path you'd also like to take. Then, start doing master studies of their work. practice fundamentals along with doing master studies. and break down those master studies with the concepts of value structure, color, light, form. You will improve exponentially. You will discard what you don't like or find useful, and keep the things you like. Move onto another artist, and do the same thing. Eventually, you should strive to create a new artwork that displays the things you learned, so you can keep track of your progress.
