I was surprised that you chose to intentionally improve your Cantonese starting from your teens. I noticed that a lot of heritage speakers (myself included) don't willingly want to improve their parent's native language until after they become adults.
I almost always spoke Cantonese with my parents (though it was until this year when I realized that I wanted to not speak Chinglish when I try to speak Cantonese.
Thanks for answering my question too.

This is exactly my situation as well. It comforts me knowing there are plenty of other heritage speakers in the same boat as me. When I was in school I was always ashamed to be half Chinese, I thought it was embarrassing to speak Cantonese (partly because mine is so bad lol), and I used to get upset when people would point out that I'm Asian because I felt different and I was like "I'm just as much white as I am asian, why is no one pointing that out". Lol. I'm 23 now, and I realize how silly that all was. If I could go back and be more proud of being different and be more intentional about my heritage, I would. But I am now, I'm just a little late to the party 🤷‍♀️😉

@@Myusernameistakenwtf Also when I was a child I only learned Cantonese through listening to my parents (I only started learning how to read/write some Chinese characters during the past year). So my Cantonese was very limited (even if I wanted to improve my Cantonese) until I intentionally tried to learn Cantonese through resources such as Cantonese with Brittany

I feel like all kid’s shows are better in Cantonese haha
Also, gotta say I really like these kind of typical youtuber style videos. As someone who spends way too much time on social media watching GRWMs and those stuff I really enjoy learning from those kinds of formats

Interesting... I have a similar experience as you: Mandarin was my first language, and then English took over due to living in the states, and then I started relearning Chinese in college. I wish I started earlier and hope other ABCs and CBCs will connect with their roots more too!

Cantonese was also my first language. I grew up watching TVB and I am still watching TVB. Watching Cantonese drama really helps improve your skill in the language.

Hi Brittany, your Cantonese is pretty good! Since moving to NC there are an influx of Chinese either from Taiwan or China so they speak 普通話,mandarin so I don’t have people to talk with either. I do love watching Hong Kong tvb series. I love Journey to the West 西遊記! you should be able to find it on TH-cam. Enjoy! Do you know your Chinese name?
