    One of the featured books is upside down. Is that because there's something off about it's characters? Or did I neglect to correct the footage? 😱🙃 We may never know...

    Great video, Hannah! Such a winner. Showing the books as you talked gave life to the descriptions.
    In January, I decided to revisit some Women's Prize winners from the past and picked up a few at my local used book store. One of them was We Need to Talk About Kevin. Two others I picked up were Piranesi and Song of Achilles. I also just received a copy of Demon Copperhead from a friend.
    Like you, I'm excited for the 2024 long list to be announced!

      And of course Demon Copperhead was one of my favorites last year. So excited for you to read it.
      I just got back from a spontaneous trip to a few used bookstores, and I found a WP nominee that I haven't read (How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House) for just $3.00! 🥳
      I'm so happy you have so many wonderful books to explore. Happy reading!

    I only started following the WP in the last few years so it was very surprising to me how many books I had read that were nominated/won at some point! I've added Sport of Kings to my TBR, that looks like such an interesting book. I've just finished How to Say Babylon from the longlist and really enjoyed it. I listened to it on audiobook (read by the author!) and it was a really great read. I hope it's a winner for you too!

      🐛How marvelous that you've added The Sport of Kings to your TBR. It's an incredible book. I'd love to know how you feel about it once you've read it.
      I recently finished How to Say Babylon and it was such a moving book (and very relatable, sadly). That was my first of the nominated WP non-fiction that I finished, followed shortly thereafter by Eve, which I found even more amazing.
      I'll be getting around to posting some BookTube reviews on these books in the future, but for now I'm focused on the enjoyment of exploring their pages. 🥰

      @@hellobookworm I admit I'm always a little bit pleased when books we've included show up on other prize lists as well. And then there's the Booker, which didn't even include Demon Copperhead on their longlist? 🤷‍♂

    • @hellobookworm
      @hellobookworm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Robert.SheardIn the last few years, it seems like the Booker has gotten away from commercial titles and books written by prominent authors. They've gone the way of the lesser known, the more obscure. It seems to be resonating with quite a few Booker readers.
      Meanwhile, I think the Women's Prize has drifted the other way, selecting titles that have more commercial appeal that will resonate with a broader audience, and I am 100% here for it.

    So many wonderful books here! Oh, The Bandit Queens! But call me surprised: I didn't realize that Gone Girl had been nominated for the prize. I hate that we haven't had another book from her because I enjoyed all three of her novels. I also loved The Signature of All Things--I wish more people realized what a beautiful writer Gilbert is. I've had Alias Grace sitting unread on my shelf for far too long. The Sport of Kings is probably my favorite here--even after making the prize list I think it was criminally underread. It lost to The Power, didn't it? I agree it should have been the WINNER. Thank you so much for the kind words about my channel! I'm so happy you're back on booktube!

      🐛I think you're right about The Sport of Kings losing to The Power. Man oh man am I anxious for another book from C. E. Morgan. I've long hoped for another book from Gillian Flynn. She was supposed to write a book as part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project, but I believe that fell apart (not sure why). Now she has her own publishing imprint, so no idea if she'll be publishing her own work anymore. Sigh.

    We Need To Talk About Kevin really strikes a cord with me. Modern individualism weighs heavily on our minds - and it's a crucial mistake; the weight of an idealized existent. I have found that the individual reinforced through eager passion and furthered by his obsession with his identity (the idealized modern identity) is not the sort to withstand himself and his own sinful nature.

    • @hellobookworm
      @hellobookworm  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for sharing these insightful observations. I agree that individualism is a mistake, and it's terribly sad to see how prevalent it is now. It would be interesting to revisit We Need to Talk About Kevin while thinking about individualism and how it is demonstrated by the protagonist's son.

      @@hellobookwormYou're welcome! And I enjoyed the video! But we also have to be careful with the other way of a "virtuous" collectivism. That's how we get entangled with something like the communist ideal, again, which is predicated on an idealism. I'm very much an idealist, but in a more Platonist way.
