10 Bit 4:2:2 video is quickly becoming the new norm with increased camera specs like color sampling on Sony a7Siii 10 bit 4:2:2, Canon R5 10 bit 422 camera, and Panasonic GH5 10 bit 422 video; but the question is do you need 4:2:2 color sampling. Chroma sampling, also known as color subsampling or chroma subsampling, is represented by 4:2:0, 4:2:2, or 4:4:4 as the most common subsampling options. To answer the question of what is chroma subsampling, it is a representative of how much color in video pixels is being captured. The reason 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0 is better because 422 retains more original color. 4:2:0 copies color from adjacent pixels so that only 25 percent of the original color is recorded, whereas 4:2:2 video retains 50 percent of the original color information. This extra color information retained from the higher chroma sub sample allows for better video color editing, video color correction, and video color grading. New to video (Nikon Z9). I'm a stills photography for Sports/Action/Wildlife without video experience. I've been making my way through TH-cam videos dissecting out one piece at a time (i.e. H.254 vs H.265 vs ProRes vs N-Log). I landed here looking for a visual representation of the lingo 4:2:0 vs. 4:2:2 vs 4:4:4. This was the best video explanation I've found to date. Can't thank you enough. Sir I have been reading so many articles in internet to study about the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 chroma subsampling..but not even one of them has explained it clearly about what happens...all of them just uses hifi technical terms ,paying no heed on explaining it in simple terms...but you have done a great job and I totally understood the concept... thanks a lot sir!!

Took me awhile to finally understand subsampling. But I should have just watched this video. Either way it’s pretty good that you mentioned that it’s not everything and that with the 4 of luminance it won’t be so drastic. Also remember that when you watch even a UHD blu ray at 90mbits it’s still at 4:2:0 10bit. Processing and compression methods can retain the look you want.

I was contemplating on purchasing a Gigabyte M32U 4K monitor for my pc and PS5 setup but a common complaint is that the HDMI 2.1 will require the PS5 to be adjusted to 4:2:0 chroma sub sampling to take advantage of the 4K gaming video quality. People made it sound like the picture quality was going to be poorer or half as good in some way and feel like they are being cheated. But this video made it clear that I’m not going to visually see a loss in visual quality. Thank you for this video. It helped with my decision to buy this monitor.

nice video and finally someone more talks about Chroma Sampling. In Cinematography Light and Color and store that information is everything. I believe back in the days, the Sony F3, when coming out also had the oportunity to shoot in 444... nice I wait for 444 as an option on smaller budget cameras

First time I finally understand this concept, thanks a ton!
Two quick questions for people smarter than me :
- Coming from graphic design, Photoshop etc, for screen, we usually use three values for color information : hue (color/chroma), luminance… and saturation (hence HSL, which I find easier to make sense of compared to RGB, HEX, CMYK - the last one being for print anyway). Is saturation an obsolete/irrelevant notion when it comes to cameras/sensors?
- Let’s say that I have the option to shoot either in 6k 4:2:0 or 4k 4:2:2, both in full frame, with the same camera, like a BS1H.
If I don’t crop-in my 6k footage but resize it in my editor, will I keep a similar amount of color information? I understand that there are probably other variables to take in consideration though…

6K vs 4K is just more pixels for a larger image. But from what I understand, the 4:2:2 of the 4K would actually provide more accurate colors than a 6K video at 4:2:0.

Nice explanation, finally understand 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0. Now that my Sony A7RV has it i will use 10 bit but some ppl say you should still use 4:2:0 cause in HAVC-HS (H.265), it is much wider supported then 4:2:2. Now i only need to know S-log 3 vs HLG3 (mainly for landscape shooting, so not the typical portrait youtube video).
Really just depends on how much grading you want to do.
@@CamberFilmSchool Don't mind a long term 'hyper grading option' (with S-log seems) but to take accurate good video, i like WyziWyg, i forgot wich profile is default on A7RV but that one definitely is WyziWyg. (and probably still gradable).
Nice. Regardless of what profile you shoot in, getting as much right in camera as possible will make the process pretty easy.

Canon RP, and it does have 4:2:2 with external recorder via HDMI. Otherwise 4:2:0 internally (8 bit color on both). I'm on the fence about picking up an Atomos Ninja V.
Yea, unless you are doing a lot of work that requires keying colors like green screen, I probably wouldn’t get it just for the 4:2:2 upgrade. If it was an external to 10 bit as well, then that would be a lot more beneficial. That’s why I never used a recorder with my a7iii because it was still 8 bit. But I’m going to try out the ninja with my a7Siii to try out that RAW video.
@@CamberFilmSchool For me, the RP is just a stepping stone. It's not the end camera I'll be using, so that's why I was considering the Atomos. I completely agree that if I'm only ever going to use the RP, yeah, not worth getting the Atomos. I had purchased the RP cause I actually didn't like either the R or RP and the R5 and R6 hadn't been officially announced yet so I wanted to go cheap just to buy time until later when I planned on upgrading. The the Atomos Ninja V would eventually get used to its potential.
