- In this episode I film a day in the life of myself due to many asked questions. I start out at work, and the go to the Zambi Wildlife Retreat to do some volunteer work and then home to work on getting the engine back into the grader.
Facebook : / stevesplacedownunder
The ZAMBI Wildlife Retreat is the only facility of its kind in Australia. It is a resort-style retirement sanctuary for animals from the circus and entertainment industry and private ownership.
The ZAMBI Wildlife Retreat specialises in providing enriching habitats for big cats, primates, and other exotic species that require a forever home.

Jezz mate you work bloody hard. Makes me appreciate your videos even more.
Thank you again Anthony. Yes I do mate. I basically have to with the way things are at the moment. Plus that job mostly requires it also
@stevesplacedownunder That Volvo belonged to Bullens Lion Safari. They had a park in Beenleigh QLD and in NSW. That will corroborate your elephant truck mate.
@anteast2684 yes it does mate. They had a team up there for the elephants until they passed. This is still at the lion safari where we were. The exact site and that’s why it’s still parked there. The old one I have here at home I tried to start is bullens also
Well Steve that bit on that cat dozer was very impressive to see what you do there at work thanks so much for filming that keep doing the videos if you can it good to see new and old machines mate great work .thank you
Thank you Alan. I thought it was a good idea. I will try to involve a bit more of it when I can
Steve, thanks for day in the life of what you do and the zoo. The zoo is amazing.
It’s a great private place mate. Very well looked after
@@stevesplacedownunder Its a shame that its so far away from me. It'd be a great place to visit.
Hi, Steve, Thanks for your video's, keep them coming Please, .from John in the UK,
Thank you mate. I’m glad you like it. Steve in Sydney
Awesome truly awesome adventure as always yall are awesome brother family and friends !!! The refuge is awesome beautiful sanctuary for these awesome critters
Whooa -Never thought I would see Lions 🦁 & Tigers 🐯 on the Channel - Superb! First time seeing a Dozer in so many pieces - Great stuff. Well done helping them out at the Zoo ☑️💪 Have a Malt Sandwich! 🍻
You never know what you will see on here mate. Glad you liked it
That place amazing and the animals are wonderful and beautiful. Thanks for gifting your time and knowledge to such a wonderful place. Thank you both and all volunteers 🙏
It’s a magnificent cause mate. They do really well with it all. Looked after the animals really well
Love it! That’s my kind of work I know it’s a job for you and you’d rather forget it but that’s the kind of work I love I guess I never did it long enough to really get sick of it. I was over trucks after my apprenticeship but a couple years driving now I love working on trucks again👌🏻but I’ve always loved earthmoving gear
Hi mate. It’s a big job. It’s what I do every day. I drove for a while but once you start doing this it’s always in you and you do enjoy going back to it. Especially the real big jobs like this. Hope you are well. I haven’t seen your last 2 yet. I start to watch something when I lay down at night then im out 🤣. I’d rather the earthmovers than the trucks. I only really work on the trucks at home or when I was field service I would go to the odd truck breakdown. Thanks Jake
Bloody hell Steve your a busy bloke - I along with many others appreciate the fact that you can do all that and still do some videos for us 👍your a true gentleman mate - cheers mate - Mark in Tassy .
Thanks for the tour of the zoo. You are certainly a man of many talents.
I certainly try to be mate. Thanks for watching Neville
I did not expect this. Very nice indeed. Thanks
Im glad you liked it mate. Something a bit different
Holy smokes! What a full life you have!! I'm exhausted just from watching. Ha ha! You definitely deserve every single bit of success you have. Well done, and I'm looking forward to seeing the grader come back to life. Thanks for sharing you life with us!!
Im really enjoyed "a day in the life video." Couple of thing that I got out of it, 1. Your a bloody hard worker Steve, 2. You don't appear to rest, 3. You enjoy your grog. Keep up the videos Steve.
Another awesome video guys!! Was watching the grader live stream the other day and was very impressed with the interaction with us commentors! Promise if i ever get to visit i definitely will not water the new fence!!
Hi mate I’m glad you liked it. I really enjoyed doing it too and will be doing more of it

Great video Steve . Hard heavy work you do and can be a challenge, Thanks for this
Great job Steve
Great video thanks for the tour
My pleasure mate thank you
Howdy 🤠 from the Northwoods of Minnesota
Back in the office Steve👍
Very interesting thank you nice scantuary
They have done wonders up there mate. Very well set up
Thanks Steve for the insight into your paid work and also the zoo. You've talked a bit about both in your videos but it was good to acutely see in a bit of detail. One thing I don't miss since retiring is going to work in the dark in the mornings.
Hi Adrian. It’s my pleasure mate. It was my wife’s idea and I thought it was good. People seem to like it.
It’s a real bugger getting up that early. My 25th year of doing it and still not used to it. Doesn’t get any easier by any means mate as I’m sure you know. I may get a rest one day
That was all interesting, seeing what you do for a living as well as the zoo was very good.
Great to see you hard at work at the shop, very nice facility. Just a little comment from ole Steve in Chicago, cheers and beers, mate, 🍻 🍺 beers to you my young mate!!!
Thanks Steve, very interesting mate.
Grate video mate, if you made more like this I wouldn’t be mad about it!
Thank you mate. Yes I may. If it’s an interesting day I will
what a great life you have Steve , work on dozers and a wife that works in a zoo bloody unreal . good onya mate .
Hello mate. Yes it’s good but very full on. Not a lot of time to rest. No complaints though Paul. Hope you are well
Big gear big Dollars Steve very good Vlog great stuff cheers Michael northern NSW
Hello mate yes that’s for sure. Thanks for watching from out there
Good job Steve, keep it up mate
Thank you mate I certainly will
Bought back some memories Steve. My dad used to rebuild dozers and and all sorts of machinery back in the 60,s. We also had a couple of zoos around Brisbane growing up,both went a long time ago all houses or town houses now. Cheers 🍻
Really enjoyed the video.
That's a nice zoo. The animals look to be well taken care of.
Hi Steve. You are an amazing bloke. You work 70 hours a week then volunteer at the exotic animal rescue sanctuary, go home and work on your land and menagerie of old trucks, tractors and machinery whilst somehow fitting in time to produce videos to share your time, thoughts, expertise and humour, not to mention the time you dedicate to your family. I’d assumed you were a truck mechanic/troubleshooter, but heavy earth moving equipment is on another level (no disrespect to truck mechanics out there) and it was great to have a quick tour of the D10.
You are 100% genuine and quite how or why people would accuse you of creating “clickbait” titles/content defeats me - it’s the last thing you’d ever do in my opinion. I’m going to watch your 3 hour live grader video whilst hooked up to my haemodialysis machine later today so thank you in advance for that. 😊 Try not to work too hard and take care.
Thank you mate it means a lot that you notice all this. Yes it’s all true and how it is it’s a full on lifestyle but it’s what we do and it all works out. I am exactly what you see in the videos. I am certainly genuine. I hope you enjoy the long video from yesterday. It went really well and was completely unexpected or planned. What is the machine you are hooked up to for? I read it now can’t go back to see it again?
@ My kidneys packed up a few years ago, then I had one removed completely due to cancer. The haemodialysis machine does the work of my kidneys and filters toxins and undesirable compounds from my blood via a couple of needles in one arm. I do it 4 times a week for 3 hours or so at a time and without it I’d be in serious trouble pretty quickly. I’m also unable to use my right leg so use crutches or a wheel chair to get about and my lungs are shot. I can’t get away or travel anymore (my career took me around the world and I loved it) which is why channels such as yours are such treasures, especially on a cold, damp winters day. Thank you so much for what you do, both on TH-cam and for the animal rescue.
That was a great Vid Steve and the Zoo was amazing and a credit to all involved .I understand how hard it is to work long hours after 20 plus years driving Interstate through the late 60s to the late 80s then 11 years of Vic Country and the odd interstate trip doing up to 18 hours a day plus 9 of those 11 years doing fleet maintenance ,servicing and every other repair including clutches ,gearboxes ,brakes ,engine rebuilds ,spring packs ,king pins and whatever plus a repower on a fleet of 13 vehicles from 1 tonne vans ,trays and tautliners plus a semi .I'm 76 years old and I still work casually for an old friend of mine but I sure as hell don't do a 100 plus hours a week anymore.
Hi Rod. Yes mate they do really well with it.
It’s a hard life mate working that hard, but it’s what you have to do and what it takes to get the job done. I don’t love it but know it well and pays well, close to home too. What else would I do I guess. You’ve certainly had a good go and done your part mate, time to enjoy now and do a bit here and there when you feel like it. Life’s far from easy. Thanks for sharing Rod
Great video team, honestly Steve more talking is key to success going by other channels.
Thank you mate. I have been trying to keep the talking to a minimum though because I get criticism for talking too much, but I like too and sometimes can’t be helped. I think it’s good too
Awesome morning brother from down under 😂😂😂 you made me laugh the other day on your live when you told the Mrs that I always say from another country 😂😂😂😂 !!! You know brother I understand that you feel like you have to explain to everyone about your videos !!! Anyone that has watched your channel for any length of time know that you are genuine !!!! Hopefully I will be able to become a patreon soon !!! I enjoy every adventure that you share !!! The real people that watch understand those that say negative things are just poor excuses for humans !!! Don't worry about haters brother they are like farts they dissipate with the wind
Yes when she said your name I said brother from another country and she said that’s what you wrote🤣🤣🤣. You can join as a free member mate. I involve the free members in every post anyway. I don’t need money from you by any means.
good stuff
I enjoy watching whatever you are doing I am a subscriber from Thailand
This was great Steve, really enjoyed the D10 rebuild review. I'd never see the inner bits of one here, so it was terrific to see it apart. Zambi is just amazing, wonderful animals in a beautiful setting. Grader's coming along well too. Howdy to Georgina and the family. I liked the video very much. Nice to see a warm, green place for a change, still froze solid here and a good foot of snow on the ground. About 5 weeks of winter left here I'd say. Cheers!
awesome stuff mate
Magnificent mate thank you
Thanks for sharing much appreciated
@@malcolmyarnold6172 it’s my pleasure mate and thanks for watching
Thanks Steve, good to see what you do for a crust. And at the zoo that was interesting as well, having work at a local zoo up here in Queensland ( Alma Park Zoo for those up this way) use do their property maintenance and with the animal. Will be good to see the grader back up and running again. Cheers Mate. Thanks again.
Gday Steve. Loved having a squiz in the workshop. Memories of back in the early 60’s with dad and later at my own job before I retired. I remember that circus well and I reckon most older Sydney siders would too. For some reason I feel the need to have a coffee and sit and watch some tigers 😂. And then you get to muck around with your own stuff. Thanks for sharing with us, mate 😊
Great day in the life of Steve. In the 70's my Dad was a Jag mechanic so used to sneak into work with him on Saturday and spend the day nosing round the E types / XJ12's and pass him his kit. Can't do that now with the health and safety rules 😂.
Gday, that was a brilliant, definitely like to take the wife to see the zoo, she is animal mad, if Bec had her way we’d have a zoo here, thank you mate, throughly enjoyed watching, cheers
Gday mate. She sounds like my missus too mate. The house and everything would be full of animals
Great video, Steve.
I’m glad you liked it. Thank you mate
Was interesting tagging along with you. I'd hate to be footing the bill for the dozer rebuild. Animal park would be a cool place to hang out. See you on the next one 👍
It’s a big bill indeed Jimmy.
It certainly is a nice place to hand out mate
Might visit the retirement animal village. Wonder where it is. Very interesting video.
Link is in the description for the animals mate. Location in Western Sydney
kool vid from heavy duty machine's 2the zoo, if it wasn't for volunteer's place's like that would close there doors job well done, 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Steve, its got to cost a bloody fortune to keep those animals. A beautiful place. The land alone must be expensive. Add in the cost of fencing etc etc. There is nothing like that near me. Great video, really enjoyed it. The non believers of the elephant truck must live a sad life.
Yes it does Jim. It costs the lady that owns it thousands a week just to feed, and it’s all off donations and the odd few tours that go through there. A few big companies and big celebrities support it fairly well too.
Yes it’s amazing what people don’t believe. Something had to cart the elephants on the road. Thanks Jim. Would be good to talk on the phone soon
Steve Buddy ! It's 3am here. I'll spend tomorrow with ya. Night man ! 👊😎👍
Beautiful mate. Sleep tight
G'day Steve excellent day in the life of mate did you go through cat apprenticeship, I'm not really fond of zoo's but this one looks beautiful and so well kept the wife's video lovely spoken with passion thanks to you all for sharing, hope the 10T is getting new batteries so you can recycle those old ones
I did my trade through this mob I’m with mate. Started in January 2001 and still there. I’m not a massive zoo bloke either mate. But I certainly do appreciate them and praise them for rescuing them and giving them a good home after being with various circus and other entertainment mobs.
The 10 has decent batteries in it and will be going back in unfortunately
@stevesplacedownunder hey up Steve thanks for the reply, wasn't very hopeful about the batteries as most probably get changed on site anyway, rescue zoo looks a good spot for a lazy hot day with sandwiches
@johngibson3837 I’ve got a fair few out of there over the years. If one goes we change the lot in the machine so I get them if I can. It would be a good spot in the shade for a sandwich John
I'm not kissing your arse Steve but that was a really interesting video, I love watching the day in the life of a normal bloke! I love seeing where you live, what you do, it just makes it more engaging and to see it's not staged..I'm just a average bloke who lives and works an average life, but to see someone you doing the same the other side off the world make these videos so much more interesting, keep it up mate.. and p.s. love to see the old f10 running! love the old volvos and Scanias.. Dudley..
Hey steve thanks so much for this look into your day job,i found it great as my apprenticeship back in 1974 was as a fitter @turner rebuilding earth moving machines mostly very big bucket line trenchers,.
Thay D10,S A BIG ONE was it v8 i heard you say its 27 lts.
The zoo,s amazing my daughter lives in sydney and i told her about it she,s been their but next time im over we are going for a look, maybe even meet you if it comes together. But again thank you ,ohh the old F10 a blast from the past mate of mine drove one for bowley rural sheds in Clare back in the early 80,s nice truck in their day i think Volvo were the only European engine to come out with a Jake brake head option .That what i like about your channel good memories for me mate.
Cheers kym
Adelaide
Hi Kym. Yes very similar work. They are complicated those bucket trenchers. Hard work mate. I don’t love it, but I know it, it’s a good environment and good money and close to home. It’s a v12, with a c15 head on each side.
It’s a good place to look at animals if that’s your thing and you want that private experience without a crowd. I would love to meet you. I’m not far from the cbd of Sydney, depending on where your daughter lives. Just let me know or look me up.
They are a good truck those Volvos. Just the rust is dreadful on them. There’s plenty more old stuff coming for you Kym. Stay tuned mate.
@stevesplacedownunder
Thanks Steve
* Hey Steve. Interesting work. Keep your fingers from under the heavy bits ! Lol 🤭 Yeah I know about getting up early. I was a boltmaker for 36yrs. Shift started at 5:30am 30 miles away from home. 4, 5, 6, sometimes 7 days a week. We had a contract with Caterpillar. If you see an M or H on the heads of the bolts your working with they came from my plant. Beautiful Zoo. Cheers Mate ! 🍺🤛😎👍

Hi Steve have u ever herd of a dodge canter truck
And i would be cool to see the volvo start up
Hi mate. Yes I have. I lightly recall my mates dad having one when he was fencing many years ago, but I could be wrong.
Faaark that's early for a Saturday, do you watch cutting edge engineering mate?
Yes very early. No I don’t. It’s too close to what I do and I try to forget about it on the weekends
Fair call mate, yet again another great video thanks mate@@stevesplacedownunder
He does a great job that bloke. I have watched him, but I do see a lot of it from getting a bloke to do it for us here. Glad you liked it Dave
70 hours a week mate, I struggled to do 40 hours when I was working.❤
Fantastic video thanks just one problem your wife didn't show us your enclosure 😂😂
I more surprised you spend that much time at work fixing machines to then come home and spending your free time fixing machines.
Excellent video Steve
