  • In this video, I show you how to install a Ram assist system that I installed on my own jeep.
    This will work specifically for the Jeep Wrangler JK and JKU.
    Parts that I used:
    Ram - amzn.to/3TQnKGS (Prices fluctuate on this. I got it for $180 on sale)
    Clamp - amzn.to/3x77oQq ($55)
    AN6 to 1/4NPT fittings - amzn.to/3KSZUGF ($12)
    Tap and drill - amzn.to/3RG1UEa ($5)
    Power Steering hoses were purchased locally. They were $20 for each hose to be made.
    Grand total I paid - $292

      The sector shaft doesnt have anywhere near the lateral force on it now with the ram doing most of the work. Mines fine on 40s with D60.

    I don't know about the JK, but on the JL I'd say that the steering stabilizer mount isn't really a strong enough anchor for hydro RAM. I did a full PSC system and had some fabrication done on that end. You might want to keep an eye on that. Also, despite the magnet, I'd still be nervous about shavings that could possibly fall into the steering box when porting it this way. That's just me though...

    • @4WDTrek
      @4WDTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have specified in the video, this isn't the stock mount for the steering stabilizer. It was an aftermarket one for a lift that I installed on the jeep.
      Also with the shavings, as I was cutting with the tap, and also with the drill, I was very meticulous about only going so deep, pulling it out and cleaning, then cutting a bit more. But that is definitely good looking out for that though!

  • @thebakery3996
    @thebakery3996 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you do this it’s a good idea to clean it first at least. You really want to rebuild it when you do this cuz of more pressure. Also clean out the inside cuz ya just put shavings in it.

    • @4WDTrek
      @4WDTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually didn't get any shavings in there, if you can believe it. I checked with a very small borescope

  • @TheRambler-pz1gx
    @TheRambler-pz1gx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just a heads up.
    I have seen 3 people with ported JK boxes,and ram assist break a sector shaft on the trail.
    no clue how its possible. My assumption is the pressure inst 1:1 in the ram vs the box. thus force is being applied to the sector shaft, or the ram is over steering the box thus breaking the sector shaft.

    • @4WDTrek
      @4WDTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny you say that, a buddy of mine just broke his sector shaft after I made this video.
      I'm looking into that sector shaft brace that he did.

    • @jimsather6892
      @jimsather6892 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4WDTrek There are several of them out there, but FWIW I really liked the Synergy sector shaft brace/stabilizer a lot. I ended up having to take mine off when I got the big bore PSC box, but up until that point it was definitely a noticeable improvement, removing some of the play caused by the factory aluminum box and mount in the JL.

    • @4WDTrek
      @4WDTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimsather6892 good heads up. I have been looking at the synergy one as well.

    • @Marty1911
      @Marty1911 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect that in those cases the stroke of the ram exceeded the travel of the other steering components. That would be the only way that i can think of that the ram would add stress to the sector shaft.

    • @jimsather6892
      @jimsather6892 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marty1911 That might be true if the wheels were on a flat smooth low/no friction surface. It is not true when in the rocks. The force of the ram is both lateral and diagonal back to the sector shaft (basically an anchor point), and there can be quite a bit of force even before the steering travel limit is reached when there is high wheel friction.

    • @4WDTrek
      @4WDTrek  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It has been great on the 40s. I'm not sure if the 1.75 is actually needed or not. My limiting factor currently us the slower response when turning hard one way then back the other way at slow speeds, but I think that's due to the flow rate of the pump. But for l just normal driving and on trails, it works very well.

    • @4WDTrek

      It was ever so slightly when perfectly centered. You can see it force the wheel out a bit. You can put a spacer externally or internally to limit the travel though.
