They can come with posters, postcards, small photos of the artist that fans collect, individual member covers for group albums (eg. in a four member group there are 4 albums you can collect with one of the performers on the cover and then there's one group one. It's a great way to capitalise off of rapid fans who'll collect everything). Oh and of course photobooks. Not everything comes with EVERY album but they do throw in lots of extra little perks to give fans an incentive to buy the physical album.

The client does the work, takes on the risk and all overheads. Artist-side just takes in the money. The issue with that is you need to have a brand to leverage, which is where physicals come in - they're now a loss-leader in the music industry. You create a product to tout, you do promo, get exposure, and then use that as a springboard into the lucrative stuff. That's why albums have mostly died, as record companies only need singles or EPs to push an artist. Albums take time and money.
This is an important subject, but the hectic editing of this show is nerve wrecking to watch. Also, they've missed the key figure in the whole debate: why accuse streaming services for making artists poor when only 10% of royalties that Spotify pays actually reaches the artists while labels fill their pockets with a 60% share?
The failure of the label system wasn't a failure of a system designed to pay artists being superseded by a system which failed to pay them. The labels are not upset that you're not paying artists, they're upset that labels aren't making as much money as they used to by dramatically under-paying artists. Most artists had to move on many decades ago by making most of their money in live performance, and not by music sales. This was no less true in the vinyl and cassette era than it was in the CD era or the Spotify era. The only catch for most artists is that they get to keep most merch sales at venues, so if you buy the CD at a retail outlet for $15, they'll get about $0.10. If you buy it for $10 at a show, they'll get about $9.50. Buy your CD and vinyl at the show if you want the physical object, you'll pay less and most of the money will go to the artist.
I use Bandcamp whenever it is possible. But it is most irritating when it is impossible to actually buy the music. Like only being available on iTunes or Amazon. In the latter it is not possible to buy the music unless you are in the country where the Amazon domain is hosted. I just want a simple online store from the artist website to download the album or just put it on Bandcamp. :P

The only streaming I use is TH-cam and sometimes soundcloud but either than that I'd rather use the radio to check out different songs and I can't wait to have my own library of both MP3s and CDs.
Its so hard for a musician or label to prevent music from being pirated because it is so easy for it to be pirated. There needs to be some sort of advancement in tech for this to be slowed down.
When I was a teen, I illegally downloaded most of my music because there weren't any good record shops and being a teen who doesn't have money or a creditcard sucks. The golden ticket is easy cross-platform consumption. If you buy the vinyl record, it should include a CD and come with free downloads and streaming on every device you have. And download/streaming only configurations should exist too. No platform fragmentation, or paying more for lossless audio! Give the consumer the easiest and the best musical experience and it will help labels and musicians get better revenues.
Lol of course the guy from Soundcloud doesn't think streaming is hurting artists, what would he know anyway, I don't think there is even a way to make any money at all on Soundcloud. That platform has been slowly regressing anyway, getting rid of most of it's features that made it grow as a place for budding artists (which weren't very good to begin with) and now it's just a place you store shit so you can easily post it and embed elsewhere.

I buy CDs and Vinyl. I spend those 163$ in one month on music, and I am a millennial. My generation is a shame...you can call it change or progression, for me it´s just stinginess, greed and the mentality that everything should be for free... There is a lot of work in that music, and work should be paid.

I listen to a ton of non mainstream artists and support them by buying tracks digitally directly from them requiring no label middleman at all. That way they keep more of the money I send them. Plus patreon is great for niche audience based artists who again can be completely solo only paying a small fee to patreon for the infrastructure.

I make instrumental music and distribute through media for sync licensing royalties. I dont get paid a lot however over time when the music is streamed over the years and your music is used in other forms of media such as independent films, video games or the internet then over time it will bring in more money I believe. It isn't a short term goal at all. Its a longevity goal because music will always be needed for media in general.

"we're so poor. Downloads bankrupt us. whee whee whee" Poor poor musicians, who 'only' made a couple million this year and bad bad music-lovers who wouldn't accept paying 5000% of what the music is actually worth... I want to know how much these streaming services are making off of these artist per stream. They obviously have a number for that, or there would be no way for them to know how much to pay these artist.
I used to buy 1 or 2 artists albums every year. Now I'm paying $10 a month which equates to the industry making more money. But the artist doesnt get that money. Big label heads do. Streaming payouts need to go up. Not by a lot, just make them slightly greater than a penny.
At least when it comes to artists making money nowadays, 95% or more of their annual income comes from touring: hard tickets for selling out seats in arenas, and merchandising. Considering streaming is the number 1 way of accessing your favorite artists now, and how little the artists and record labels get paid through that medium of monetization, touring is the holy grail that all artists are currently relying on. Proving that it is the "experience" of being at a live event of your favorite artist, a night to remember, that people will pay for, and not the actual music itself.

They don't really talk about the costs of making quality music that is lasting and makes widespread impacts. Streaming is not good for getting a real band with instruments to be recorded with quality equipment by people who know what they're doing and carefully polished by more professionals to create a brilliant warm album. Nor is there any talk about the dwindling middle class having an effect on people's ABILITY to support the artists.
Before 2K artist who weren't making it complained about the establishment. After 2K the establishment dissolved and the flood gates open. Now you don't need the establishment to get heard but you also don't get paid. Everyone likes FREE until free means you TOO don't get paid. Funny how that works. Besides the idea behind making music was for the fulfillment of making art nothing else mattered. Now money matters.
Record labels didn't change there dynamic to meet customer needs. Piracy forced them too. I don't support piracy and and encourage fans to support there bands.

n my book there is no benefit to receive for instance 0.00 cents for 10 streaming on iTunes Match, if we, all the musicians and creators would reunite against this scam and retrieve all our music from those platform, maybe peoples would pay again for music and realize the value of it. I make instrumental music and distribute through media for sync licensing royalties. I dont get paid a lot however over time when the music is streamed over the years and your music is used in other forms of media such as independent films, video games or the internet then over time it will bring in more money I believe. It isn't a short term goal at all. Its a longevity goal because music will always be needed for media in general.
Did anyone notice how the experts never talked about how the music industry was screwing artists and fans. Does anyone remember $25 cd for only one good song?

Eye think us musicians should boycott the streaming services until we are paid our worth. It's not right for us to put so much time, energy, creativity, money, and quality into creating music for the world and be repaid by the thousandth of a cent for our product.

Indie-band, without record-label is able to live off concerts, fan-stuff and personal donations, while no concert is more expensive than $20.
Mainstream Pop-bands, with record label, charge $20+ per album, won't allow the songs being played without them earning money, they sell concert-tickets at $60+ and fan-stuff costs twice as much as for indie-bands... "we're so poor. Downloads bankrupt us. whee whee whee"

I want to know how much these streaming services are making off of these artist per stream. They obviously have a number for that, or there would be no way for them to know how much to pay these artist.
I used to buy 1 or 2 artists albums every year. Now I'm paying $10 a month which equates to the industry making more money. But the artist doesnt get that money. Big label heads do. Streaming payouts need to go up. Not by a lot, just make them slightly greater than a penny.
At least when it comes to artists making money nowadays, 95% or more of their annual income comes from touring: hard tickets for selling out seats in arenas, and merchandising. Considering streaming is the number 1 way of accessing your favorite artists now, and how little the artists and record labels get paid through that medium of monetization, touring is the holy grail that all artists are currently relying on. Proving that it is the "experience" of being at a live event of your favorite artist, a night to remember, that people will pay for, and not the actual music itself.

They don't really talk about the costs of making quality music that is lasting and makes widespread impacts. Streaming is not good for getting a real band with instruments to be recorded with quality equipment by people who know what they're doing and carefully polished by more professionals to create a brilliant warm album. Nor is there any talk about the dwindling middle class having an effect on people's ABILITY to support the artists.
Neither, they help the listener. The artist should be happy regardless if they're getting fans who will buy tickets to see them live or buy gear.
Before 2K artist who weren't making it complained about the establishment. After 2K the establishment dissolved and the flood gates open. Now you don't need the establishment to get heard but you also don't get paid. Everyone likes FREE until free means you TOO don't get paid. Funny how that works. Besides the idea behind making music was for the fulfillment of making art nothing else mattered. Now money matters.

Well, what else can they do now that selling their music isn't a viable model? How about doing the same thing every other self-respecting artist does? Go on fucking tour! Most of these pop-artists do 10 spots per tour and then go back home.
Metallica tours the living shit out of the world and they're one of the most successful bands around, even if their music doesn't sell that well anymore.
Tour more, merch more and realise that the glory days of living of album sales are done forever.

n my book there is no benefit to receive for instance 0.00 cents for 10 streaming on iTunes Match, if we, all the musicians and creators would reunite against this scam and retrieve all our music from those platform, maybe peoples would pay again for music and realize the value of it. it's a third world country, china, indo, phili. the citizens don't have much disposable income. these countries have other MAJOR serious crimes to worry about such as child sex trafficking and corrupt police who expect bribes (openly too in countries like russia! i experienced it!) meaning anything goes when it comes to the law. they are basically lawless countries to a large degree. forget downloading music. that's a joke.
