      Big mistake for the US to share hosting with Canada & Mexico. The organizers thought they will lose bidding (thanks to anti-Americanism), so they lumped neighbouring countries in the bid. Guess what? Only Morrocco was competing with the US,and we would have won it anyway. Now, let Canada and Mexico host their own national teams' group stage matches, then all he rest should be in the US.

    Interested how they'll format this with an expanded 48 teams and how much travel will be involved for supporters to follow their respective teams.

    • @tylerm727
      @tylerm727 ปีที่แล้ว +353

      I have a feeling it might be each group in one location considering there are 16 groups and 16 locations

    • @johnmaster3748
      @johnmaster3748 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      The format is already known (tweaks likely around travel). While Tyler may prove correct [16 groups, 16 cities; no need to travel], I think the original plan was for groups to play in cities as close to each other as feasible on the theory that travel has always been part of the WC process. Hopping multiple time zones, however, won't likely kick in til the later rounds.
      16 groups of three means every team plays two games and every group will have three match days (that one team will sit out). The worst aspect of the expansion to 48, for me, is that the two teams playing Match Day 3 will know whether a draw gets them through while the other member of their group can do nothing to stave off elimination while watching the other two teams pass the ball back and forth for 90 minutes. Similarly, if A beats B, then C beats B, then the A-C match has no stakes (aside from bracket slots). Three team groups will yield more of these dead rubber matches than the four team groups did.
      Top two advance to the new, single-elimination round of 32. Thus, the Round of 16 will be each team's fourth game just as in the 32-team format. Later rounds staged entirely in the US. I believe the format will be bracketed so that Mexico (for sure) and Canada play in-country through at least the Round of 16 (four games).

    • @johnmaster3748
      @johnmaster3748 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@tylerm727 16 cities also works for the Round of 32. 16 venues, every host city potentially gets an elimination game.

      You have to look in pairs and you will see there won't be a lot of travel.

      @BrianStorm742 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@johnmaster3748 the group stage will suck. We're gonna see a lot of questionable draws. I do like the extra KO round. But personally I would've preferred a two-stage tournament with the world's top-16 teams receiving a bye to the second stage, which would then be the current format.

    It's designed to support a grass pitch; it has full irrigation and drainage. In fact, the existing artificial turf is watered for every Atlanta United match to speed up the ball.
    Capacity-wise, for soccer it can hold at least 73,019 as that was the crowd for the 2018 MLS Cup.

    Azteca has gone through lots of small changes over the past two decades and has gone from an old stadium with charm and great views to a mishmash of seating arrangements and odd choices. However, it is already scheduled to close down later this year for a complete renovation with big ambitions; I've seen plans that will transform it into something akin to SoFi Stadium.

      The recent renovations from the 2010's were god awful. It looked terrible on TV and reduced the capacity from 95k to 87k. I remember when I was a kid one of the biggest sources of pride from the Azteca were that it was supposedly the "biggest stadium in the world" or at least among the top 3, now I doubt it makes the top 10. I'm curious to see what plans you're reffering to, i've seen some where they have very ambitious plans for the entire complex (shopping malls, hotels, pedestrians pace) but show nothing specific to the stadium itself, I hope they make some big changes because it's crumbling fast and is extremely outdated.

    One thing people will appreciate about the stadiums in Dallas, Houston and Atlanta is that they are all indoors and climate controlled. Considering the dreadful summer heat in Texas and the intense summer humidity in Atlanta, the fans and players will appreciate it- I guarantee the roofs on those stadiums will not open during this WC- they don’t open for the NFL season until late in the year, when it isn’t so hot. Kansas City, Miami, Guadalajara and the northeastern cities- Toronto and Boston less so might be a problem, and Monterrey- unless they play the games in the morning or at night will be absolutely dreadful.
    Also- SoFi Stadium isn’t an indoor stadium like the properly indoor stadiums are- its roof is more like a canopy. You’re still outside in that stadium- and unlike the Rose Bowl, which sees intense heat in summer SoFi doesn’t see intense heat because of its proximity to the ocean. LA is in a hilly desert and has a dry Mediterranean climate. The weather difference between areas in LA within 5 miles from the Pacific and areas at least 25 miles from the Pacific is quite big. The weather in areas within about 5 miles from the Pacific doesn’t often go past 80 degrees, and the further away you go from the Pacific there the hotter it gets. Pasadena, where the Rose Bowl is often sees summer temps past 100 degrees and is only 25 miles from the Pacific.

    finals will probably be in Arlington, Tx and Atlanta, GA since they have some of the largest stadiums with the one in Texas being the largest. With retractable roofs they are the safest options too

      Sofi in LA can expand up to 100,000, just like JerryWorld. Of the host cities, LA, Dallas, NY/NJ, and Mexico City are likely to be the locations of the semis and final. Those cities have the largest stadiums, large international airports, and are international travel destinations (maybe not Dallas).

    The first ever WC to be co-hosted by more than 2 countries and the first, although partially, taking place in the US since 1994. I like the idea of a sports tournament being held throughout North America, let alone when it's the biggest global sporting event! It would be amazing to follow the WC along from the group stages right up to the knock-out phase though I bet it'll be pricey, especially for foreigners like me, to book flights, find accomodations etc ... but it would be one heck of an experience for sure!
