Watching the two speakers is educational. It provides a sharp illustration, between on the one hand a professional individual who speaks from experience, competence and the highly risky management of both his professional and his personal life stages; and on the other hand an ideologist who has little to offer, sticks to the weak rationalisation of his opportunistic opposition to the Western support of an invaded independent country, and has little (if anything) to say on the merits of his supposedly humanitarian support of Russia. We do know who’s credible and worthwhile listening to.

It’s always easy to know what is right and what is wrong.
People that have too much reverence for money are the ones that have a hard time doing the right thing.
In the year 2000 I was running a construction company that I started in 1986. I turned in a person at a hospital that was demanding kickbacks.
I had to wear a wire with LAPD recoding the payoffs as I made them at a restaurant
I ultimately even had to testify in front of a grand jury.
It was scary as I also had my life threatened and as happens to whistleblowers my company was punished by the very hospital we helped. We were not asked to bid work for 5 years.
However, I’m glad I did the right thing as my 9 year old son saw the whole thing.
My wife later told that if I had cheated with another woman she might have forgiven me but would surely have divorced me if I had gotten involved in the kickback scheme.

The interviewer and a number of the questioners betray the moral squalor of too many in the financial community. A common thread was ‘how can we just go back to making as much money as possible without having to worry about how monstrous Putin and his henchmen are’. The objections to sanctions were particularly vacuous and intellectually bankrupt.

Are you kidding? He is lying. The US sanctions effect the broad public in Iran, North Korea and Russia and not at all targeted to individual people. The goal is to weaken the country. Sanctions are harsh and trivially immoral. Imagine if another country such as North Korea was capable to shut off our credit cards and limit where you can and cannot send money from the US or from Britain. Let’s say they claimed that this is bargaining power to discourage USA from imposing their sanctions on North Korea, or closer to our reasoning, they must want to do it to weaken us. Would it be moral for them to impose these sanction on our public? Of course not, it is extreme political interference. But we are allowed to impose sanctions on any country we cboose and this guy is rationalizing it as proper and moral. It is completely cruel and immoral, bordering psychotic. This guy needs to be called out.

Mr. Browder's long history with finance, Russia and Russia's endemic corruption gives him a unique, detailed perspective on Putin, the oligarchs, sanctions, and proper responses to Putin's war. His efforts to pass the Magnitsky act formed a good baseline for the much more extensive sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. The most disturbing comment was that about trump, It was bad enough when trump won the 2016 presidency through electoral gerrymandering. But even the thought of him winning in 2024 (it would have to again be via. electoral manipulations, not by the popular vote) is deeply upsetting.

I live in Austria and always get annoyed when people confronted with Ukraine bring up Iraq. Can't they really see the difference? The US conducted precision attacks on key areas and the actual war was over in a month or so. They did their best to avoid civilian casualties, as far as I know. Yes, the invasion was a mistake and they got into a quagmire with many victims and people kept fighting and dying for years to come, which is sad and terrible, but Russia is committing crimes against humanity in Ukraine, targeting civilians on a massive scale and committing atrocities, destroying nature and risking a nuclear catastrophe. The crimes committed in Iraq were exposed by US journalists and people were free to express their criticism from the beginning, while in Russia teenagers got beaten up by the police when protesting and now people risk years long jail sentences even for calling it a war.

Russia has to sell its oil at a large discount due to the EU price cap (irrespective of the country buying). Also, it's not cheap and easy to ship the oil to India and China. So Russia is making only marginal profit out of the oil sales. Their production cost is quite high. It's surprising that Bill didn't mention this.

Mr. Browder showed a distinct lack of compassion for Russians who are keeping a low profile in these turbulent times. It made me think. Much is said about how Putin has de-politicised the Russian population. This view of things promotes a sense of sympathy regarding the predicament of a people under the authoritarian thumb.
Mr. Browder's take on it struck me. I don't like drawing parallels between Nazi Germany and any modern situation, but sometimes the similarities are too similar to ignore. The Russian people's blind eye vis-a-vis what's happening in Ukraine is identical to German apathy to the holocaust under Hitler!

    Summary:
Bill Browder, a former investor in Russia, discusses the future of the country after recent events. He highlights the vulnerability of Vladimir Putin's regime following a coup attempt and the ease with which a group of mercenaries took over cities without resistance. Browder believes that Putin's grip on power may weaken, leading to potential disintegration or a ruthless purge. He emphasizes that Russia despises weakness and respects strength. Browder's current focus is on two main activities: advocating for the release of Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza and campaigning to change the law to use frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine. He argues that sanctions have been effective in pressuring Putin and weakening Russia financially, although there are concerns about unintended consequences.
    Highlights:
💣 Recent coup attempt in Russia is a significant blow to Vladimir Putin's regime, undermining his image of strength and instilling fear among the populace.
💰 Bill Browder is campaigning for the release of Russian activist Vladimir Kara-Murza and advocating for changing the law to use frozen Russian assets for rebuilding Ukraine.
🌍 Sanctions, such as the Magnitsky Act, have been instrumental in pressuring Putin and freezing Russian assets, impacting oligarchs and limiting Russia's access to international capital markets.
🛢 Browder suggests banning oil imports from Russia to further financially weaken Putin and bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
❌ Browder rejects the argument that sanctions will push Russia towards alternative currencies or drive global South countries to cooperate against the West.
🌐 Developed economies have shown unprecedented cooperation in imposing sanctions on Russia, contrary to previous individualistic economic interests.
