SYGNEH on bass, GuitarGent, Temporal72, The Champ of Medium and Dunsy on guitars with BryanForce and/ or Mike Levitsky on drums. We can get Gary to sing. You're absolutely right in that it makes me want to practice and improve myself (which I will do just as soon as I change my strings, I swear). I think the main thing I've learned from these types of videos is about overall song structure and arrangement. Pretty sure I got this from Chase Carneson's channel but it's probably pieced together from all sorts of videos. Your videos have taught me about production techniques and how to better recognize time signatures and changes, something I haven't seen anywhere else.
Anyway, I think about how they care about the listener and strive to make the song interesting. Changing things up between the first and second verses so that it's not just a copy/paste of the same music, that sort of thing. This was an idea that was kind of half-forming in my head before I saw all this stuff, that I didn't want to just stand up there and strum the same progression over and over, I wanted to make it interesting for the listener.
So, beyond all the technical stuff about scales and time changes, I feel like that I can apply what I've learned about song structure to my own music. Just as soon as I change my strings...

"Misa loves a lot of octaves"
And I love that she does.
BTW, prerecorded keyboard work is probably Kanami. She composes partly on keyboard and partly on guitar depending on what works at the time.
They all have musical skills beyond what we see in Band-Maid onstage... which boggles the mind to think about.

With this new album they are at the top of their game. Really, Really love this one. Miku and Saiki are in sync, MISA is right there with her lead bass. Akane is subtle as is Kanami letting Miku and Saiki's singing be the focus. MISA said in an interview that her bass lines are incorporated pretty much as is, this is her best work to date. Miku (?) said that one of the things they got from Tony Visconti was sometimes simpler was best.
This song sounds like they took it to heart. Miku Kobato is highly respected in Japan for her lyrics, she is a highly talented and very smart too.

I think this is in Misa's "natural" wheelhouse, even though she says that "pop punk" is her influences. As a bass player myself, Misa makes me want to either practice more, or just hang it up and enjoy their ascension. It's like watching your kids grow up. I'm good with that. They are definitely technical and are getting comfortable in their "skin," if I may say so, Po! To me, they are showing some signs of a "guttural soulfulness." You can see it Miku's face during the outro, Po! I hope I have enough digits in my life to see them reach that actuality, Po! Wonderful reaction, Po!

Nice reaction. Saiki talked before they sang this song and was very emotional about the past year and what this song meant to the band. Here is the English translation of what she said.
Saiki: We were supposed to meet you today. For the first time in a year, we thought we could meet you all, those of you who could come to see us, but we can’t meet you in the end. I’m sorry. Even though it’s not my fault.
We have been having days of turmoil for about a year. In the beginning, we were very surprised because we hadn’t experienced it before, and we had no experience of not being able to meet others in person. We were sad, but we found we shouldn’t be sad in this situation. When I saw you masters and princesses on social media, you were more depressed than us, and we thought that’s terrible.
We Band-Maid have been thinking about how to cheer up all of you in the last one year. We truly wanted to meet you at Nippon Budokan, but it’s impossible because of COVID, so let’s wait for the day when we can meet.
And in the last one year… or in the COVID pandemic, we have become more eager to cheer you up, and we Band-Maid realized again it’s important to give our songs to you.
That’s why we wrote this song for Budokan.
We made the album also in the pandemic, so it might have a little similar feel, but this song is planned for Nippon Budokan, and we really want to give it to you masters and princesses now.
Budokan is not our goal but just a stepping stone. We will perform at bigger venues, and we promise we will bring you there and give you even better songs, so let’s keep it up a little more.
This is our present for you masters and princesses. Please listen to it.

Appreciate this review. The BAND-MAID community is great... but... there are people who act like the sky is falling if their sound is too heavy or too pop. They'll say this song is simplistic but you did a good job pointing out how technical it actually is. For me, the BAND-MAID "sound" is all about complexity. They will never "sell out" because every member is involved in the creative process, and all push each other to go hard mode all the time.

You are absolutely right about MISA and what she makes you feel, wanting to go practice... I have exactly the same urge when I come across some awesome artist, I just wanna stop everything and go back to my pens and pencils and draw more and more... some people are just so inspiring.
This song... you know, when I listen to it the first time I thought "I don't like those samples at the beginning and ending...other than that, it's a cool song... does it's "job"... it's not "Daydreaming" but thats ok" ... that was my first reaction - and this is why I can't do these videos like you. Some things need time to grow... not much, but I need time to take it all in... but I do, eventually. This song is amazing and I can't help to choke a bit every time I listen to it. The lyrics are awesome, the song is beautiful. I love how the words and sung, how some little things change and mix between the Japanese and the English, they do that so well. I love it, this is my fav band, I'm currently obsessed with this new album and I can't wait for the next one... 100 songs (give or take) and I just can't get enough of them. Really special band, the best.

Here’s a super fan (t-shinji) translation of Saiki’s heartfelt monologue / speech before this song was performed that day:

    You're not a newbie, you're a MAIDIAC!
For more songs like this one try Daydreaming and Drop of A Hat.
Misa has stated that she uses a 5 string bass in order to keep up with Kanami and Akane.
You might be interested in this - From a radio interview - -
(Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right?
(Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick.
    (Chris): Show me how.
(Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm.
(Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how)
(Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever.
(Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome!
(Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice.

As I think you know, SYGNEH, (but maybe not some of your viewers) there's a difference between a "Sample" track and a "Backing" track. The definition of sampling involves taking a portion, or “sample” of a song or recording, usually from someone else's work, and reusing it as an element of a new recording - like the little gremlin effects you hear. A Backing track is one or more of the band's musicians (usually) recording additional instruments and/or vocals to play along with the live to enhance it or make it sound more like the studio recording.

    • @TomClark-Futoura
      @TomClark-Futoura 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Charles T. Velten If you're talking about the gremlin farts, etc., those are, I believe, available sampled sounds that load up on a composing keyboard. I've heard them before. And she undoubtedly played the other sounds and strings, too - plus all the guitar parts on the original recording. Kanami is unbelievable! And so was MISA on this cut... and Saiki... and Miku... and Akane... geez...

She is a session musician. (it's in the title of this video). If you want to get hired as a session musician, they are independent contractors, so you kind of have to know what's going on in session settings and what each instruments are doing: they don't have time to explain all the details of the session set and what to do - unless you are just playing your part in a recording booth - then read the following. (by the way, you also gain tremendous knowledge through being around other musicians in session settings) And also, she is probably a graduate of a music school - kind of a minimal requirement to be hired as a session musician; if that's the case she knows a lot about music in general - unless you have years of industry experience or know someone who can vouch for your skills level. You don't just walk in as a session musician.

Sorry if you've already seen it, but have you watched 'Band-Maiko', 'Secret Maiko Lips', the Band-Maid April Fool's Day alter-ego joke that was so popular, they've actually put out their own mini-album as their other-selves. I read somewhere that Wagakki Band helped them in the production, and whether it was true or not, I now have a fantasy of Band-Maid/Maiko and Wagakki Band doing a collab and I need to go and lie down. That would be like assembling the Japanese Avengers. They could save the world from auto-tuned mumble rap.
