Still holds up! To any newcomers- play the song of time backwards (so that's Down, A, Right, Down, A, Right) to give you three times the amount of time. Also, resetting to day one isn't as costly as you might think since your items and everything you learn are saved.

Your key items are saved, your consumables are lost, but they're easy to find. Every region has several "checkpoints" you can restart from if you run out of time, the primary one being the song which unlocks the temple.

BotW is a completely different game in formula and in design.
Agreed I've seen many first time streamers of the typical Zelda formula adjust after a few hours or a few streams at most. They even come away from the experiences hoping for something closer to typical puzzles in the sequel to BOTW.
Yeah. .also calling older Zelda puzzles "dated" because they only have one way to solve them is stupid. Just because the latest trend in gaming is for easier to solve puzzles with several solutions.
If you don’t want to feel the time pressure in the dungeons:
There is always an owl statue (warp point) right outside the dungeon. Once you’ve unlocked that and solved how to enter the temple, go back in time. Then play the song of time backwards. Warp back to the entrance.
Now you have like 6 real time hours to beat the temple, which is waaay more than you should need.

GREAT BAY is still my least favorite but I know damn well to learn that song then reset it before entering lol

Majora's Mask is definitely my favorite in the series. I really love the atmosphericly dark and creepy nature to it all, side quests and especially how the npc in game react to the possessed Moon getting closer towards termina by the day.
I agree. It's the most mature and serious Zelda game there is and that's what makes it great. Surprisingly, my two favorite Zelda games are Wind Waker and MM, but I never can decide which one I like more.
We need a Definitive Edition combining the best aspects of the N64 version and the 3DS remake.
buy a 3ds, hack it (very very easy to do) and you can download "project restoration" which fixes all of the problems with the 3ds remake while keeping the QOL features from the 3ds version
Edit: you can also play this mod on Citra but I prefer hardware for DS games
So basically, the N64 version untouched except the 3ds visuals.
So every thing fro the n64 and the visuals and gyro controls of the 3ds
Download the rom and add the Nerrel texture pack or the 3ds rom with the PR files.

Majora's Maks is much easier if you just play the song of time backwards to slow down time whenever you start from the first day. Also whenever you unlock a dungeon, you can always go back in time before attempting it so you can have as much time as you need to beat it (if it's your first time). Starting a dungeon on night of the final day is just foolish. Overall, time is not an issue in Majora's Mask as some people think. You're meant to go back in time, and you keep all major items you found.
Absolutely, reverse Song of Time is essential.
Majora's Mask is my #2 favorite game of all time.
For anyone who is trying to get the most enjoyment out of this game, I humbly recommend-- and genuinely believe-- that the best way to enjoy this game is to complete it 100%.
This is a game ABOUT side quests, and learning about the lives of the people who live in termina is the heart and soul of the game.
If Breath of the Wild is a vast ocean, and Ocarina of Time is a wide lake, then Majora's Mask is a narrow water well with depths that reach down to the center of the earth.
And in those depths it gets dark,
REAL DARK.

For anyone finding the time mechanic annoying, I suggest the "Inverted Song of Time" which will half the speed of time. I always used it and almost never had an issue with running out of time.
It's actually 1/3 of the normal speed. The 3DS version changes this to half speed.
My favorite videogame of all time. I hesitate to call it the best ever made, but no game has staggered me in it's revolutionary design like Majoras' Mask.
Got the game for Christmas 2002 when I was 17. Glad the generation below me gets to experience this amazing game now.

Majora's Mask has been an obsession of mine for many years. I've perfected the second cycle to the point where I can get all bar two masks (blast mask and all night mask) and can 100% complete in just 4 cycles. There's so much replay value if you become a perfectionist over it.
I'm now seeing in how many cycles I can 100% it without using the inverted song of time.
MM is such a well thought out norm breaker for series, it handled it's multiple mature themes that really connect the more you get older (death isn't the only theme here). The strict cut throat time limit i still think has aged well. It's just if the player is willing to put up with the challenge.
3DS version i still recommend to people with low tolerance for more grounded rules of the original, It looks great and alot of improvements do make it easier for the best. But if you've only played through the 3DS remake I encourage you to go back to the original. Maybe use a HD upscale widescreen mod.
I do hope if a switch remaster/remake happens (not the NSO service app) I hope we can get alot of modern improvements but revert the awful changes to zora n deku link.
Also give us difficulty options so we're not forced with the easier 3DS difficulty.
I can respect you guys not likeing the original cus you aint got the time n patience for MM's bullshit but it's unique features make it stand out and doesn't stick to the common soft norms of what casuals always want. sometimes you must be challenged to get through something.
I'd love to experience the original but with the 3ds graphics, sadly that doesn't seem possible for now, maybe when nintendo decides to rerelease the 3ds remakes and mods implement back in the original stuff
Ocarina of time and Majora's mask are my all time favorite Zelda games
Best one in the series. Keep in mind it takes place after ocarina of time. Link fulfilled his destiny already. This was a much more personal journey. Truly the best Zelda.
In my own experience, manipulation in general of the Song of Time is an important time saver, no pun intended. A lot of people have mentioned the Inverted Song of Time (↓ A → ↓ A →), but I've yet to see a single mention of the Song of Double Time (→ → A A ↓ ↓). Depending on the version, it allows you to jump 12 in game hours or advance time up to 12 hours. Like I said, time saver, pun still not intended. And to think you basically get all that information from *a SCARECROW.*
I have a memory with this game I'd like to share. It made me not want to beat it. There's a part where you enter a cave-like structure with a light shining from up top. You approach the light and get jumpscared by a skulltula. Since then, I vowed to never play Majora's Mask again. I still feel that way.
I don't blame you there a section of Metal Gear Solid V where Snake is entering a cave with creepy sound effects and out of no where a giant hand grabs you and even after that I still feel a sense of dread whenever I visit that specific location.
Final Fantasy XIII: Lighting Returns had a similar idea to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask had a similar idea but you could only talk to a couple of NPC's at a time before you had to reset the clock lol!
FFXIII LR is an underrated game, the battle system was so good and it had a interesting world that was fun to explore similar to MM I felt like

What a coincidence, I started playing it around the same time as this video came out, with Nerrel's HD textures, and aside from being one of the most melancholic and pensive gaming experiences I've ever had, it looks *gorgeous* as well.
it’s a little on the short side, and of course it stands on the shoulders of _Ocarina of Time,_ but _Majora’s Mask_ it truly exemplifies the idea of video games as works of art, and along with _OoT_ is one of the best games ever made.
It’s only on the shorter side of you ignore the side quests. Which I’d argue are the real meat of the game.
@@Danbo22987 - I agree that the side-quests are arguably the point of the game… I saw a video recently (sadly, can’t remember the name) that said something like “when you talk to an NPC, you aren’t asking what they can do for you, but what you can do for them. rather than saving the world, you’re saving the people.”
but still, too many of the side-quests are far too short and simple, like you have one little conversation and they give you a mask, and then you use the mask to get a Heart Piece or some Rupees… I wish more were like the Anju and Kafei or Romani Ranch quests, and mostly I wish there were some more mini-dungeon quests, like in Ikana Canyon.

Oddly MM was my intro to the series and l LOVE it! Becoming a Zora with boomerang fins and cruising thru termina as a Goron wheel of destruction is incredibly fun! Plus all the masks are fun to use too

i don't get how it's so "Stressful" because of the time, slow time gives you a absurd and ample amount of time to do anything you want you can probably finish two temples each cycle honestly.
Not everyone will be able to play the same way you do though. So I can see how it could be stressful to some people. I find it more annoying than stressful. But that's me.

The only version of the game that I’ve beaten was the 3DS version. But now that I’ve got it on my Wii U, I might give the original version a try.
Of course. The original dark horse has returned. I remember looking at the intro screen to this game. And staring at the (I think copyright date?) the year 2000 at the bottom of the screen. It was the newest game I had and the first game I had with the newest year on it. 22 years? My god. Has it been that long?

I'm excited to replay MM, it will be my 2nd time but it will be the 1st time i try it without a guide which i bought with the original game. Don't have the OG gold game anymore but i still own the guide. I hope i don't remember as much of the game as i do OoT because i really want to feel the frustration
Not sure yet if I want to play this one again. In my memory it's one of the best games ever made. The narrative and setting are the most profound I've ever experienced in any video game ever. This game asked so many questions and pitches so many situations that messes with your head. I just hope the gameplay and controls still hold up and don't distract too much.
I’m enjoying it just as much as when I played it for the first time wayyy back in 2014, when I was still a middle schooler.

The Pro Controller and Retro Fighters Brawler 64 for Switch. Are confusing as heck to remap the buttons for. So I'm not playing N64 on Nintendo Switch + Expansion Pack, unfortunately.
One of my favorite Zelda games!
I love Majora's Mask! It's my favorite 3D Zelda along with Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker. Although the 3DS version was good and improved graphics and a few other things, I believe the OG MM is the best!
I just downloaded it tonight I'm just waiting out time for the clock to open up. Happening as I'm typing this actually.
Glad it's the N64 version I couldn't even finish the 3ds version just didn't like it nearly as much.

people complain about the time limit, but I have literally never had the threat of running out of time hitting me. Really, the only time it would ever do so is if you're playing blind on the fairies or mess up certain sidequests and have to restart.
It's always worth playing the OG version, it might not be the best zelda game and has some age from the 64 era but it's still a very unique game ^^

I’d say if you’ve never played it before, the 3DS version is more relaxed and user friendly with qol changes
This is one of my favorite zelda games. I loved the darker atmosphere of the game.
I tried playing for the first time, but I couldn’t cause the time limit and going back was too confusing 😭
I have yet to play Majora's Mask and while I do have it for the Wii U virtual console I'm not sure whether I want to play it or just get the 3DS version. I certainly won't be getting the version on Nintendo Switch online even though it's better than the Wii U version as I still don't feel that it is worth paying for (yet).

Whoever thought using Ice Arrows to, somehow CONDENSATE the waterfall in Great Bay Temple needs to go off themselves. Otherwise, great game!

I like the visuals of 3D but they messed up very important elements like Zora swimming, inverted song of time not being as slow, Deku link not being able to get a boost of speed from a spin while jumping across water and making Gyorg and Twinmold’s fights bad IMO. Absolutely would love to see more people play MM so I highly recommend! Don’t be ashamed to use a guide newcomers, I still have to use a guide despite how much I’ve played this game 🤣
Majora's Mask is the hardest 3D Zelda game, in my experience. It's made easier on the 3DS but if you want some street cred, BEAT THIS GAME ON N64/GCN/Wii&WiiU VC/Switch VC! Don't be afraid to use a guide -- you'll probably need one but knowing where things are next time makes it much more fun/ smooth.
The 3DS version is more accessible, but they actually made the raw difficulty harder in some places like with twinmold and Gyorg. They also nerfed the inverted song of time.
That said, the accessibility the 3DS version definitely makes it a more beginner friendly experience, but regardless of which version you play it’s still a challenging game and probably not a game to recommend to a newcomer to the series.
@@callinater6133 Yes you're actually right, especially on Twinmold. I dreaded that fight. I was within the final minute fighting it! I think I finally exited the fight with 30 seconds or less on the timer too. Gyorg was also super annoying and I hated it.
Young Link only appears in Super Smash Bros Melee and Super Smash Bros Ultimate, not Super Smash Bros Brawl and Super Smash Bros 4.
Majora’s Mask is awesome but also insanely difficult for a Zelda game. I got stuck more times than I can count. I know the developers only had like a year to make it which is incredibly impressive but it does suffer from that lack of polish.
It’s not that hard I beat this game when I was like 8 years old and collected every mask lol
I recently went back and played OOT and MM for the first time in almost 20 years and while I loved OOT all over again, playing it twice through for a total of over 50 hours, I couldn't get more than 3 hours into MM before I felt like it was just wasting my time. Not only is the 3 day cycle annoying because of the feeling of being rushed, but it's also frustrating when you have to sit around and wait in real time in order to be able to do certain tasks. So it felt like I was either being rushed or that I had to sit and wait, either way the game does not respect my time.
This was fixed and addressed in the 3ds version. You could play a song to go forward in time to a specific hour, making side quests and exploring a lot more bearable. Unfortunately, it wasn't added to the switch version as well
What if BOTW 2 is the spiritual sequel to Majora’s Mask’s time limit concept, and that’s the reason they won’t give us the name yet..? Honestly can’t say if I would be down for that, but if there were true dungeons, it might be bearable.

Overall I think it’s a great game, but I’m on the team that hates the time limit. Even with the slow down song, I just hate that I can never take my time anywhere and actually take it in. My favorite thing about Zelda games has always been exploring the dungeons thoroughly, but I can’t really do that here without that damn clock ticking 😂
I do like all the side quests though. Out of all the Zelda’s i’ve played, it definitely has the most unique and interesting 😅

Favorite Zelda game. Hands down, even if some are better in certain ways, this game is an experience
7:40-7:46 How dare you! You can double your magic meter, half the damage you take, and get one of the best swords in the game from that side quest.

I’m like six hours into the game and I am about ready to give up on it. So much of the game feels very monotonous and the methods to complete the objectives feel very obscure. I know people are going to throw that exhausted line “it’s not gonna hold your hand for you“ but other Zelda games felt like they had a better flow to them. Challenging but I always felt like I knew what I was supposed to do instead of putting in a lot of guesswork, or searching over every stone and blade of grass for some semblance of a clue. Time and time again, I have to defer back to walk-throughs to figure out what I’m supposed to do or where to go and I keep blurting out “how was I supposed to know that!?“. Majoras mask has given me far more frustration than any other Zelda game I’ve played. So many classic games still hold up great today but I don’t feel like this is one of them.
I played Majoras mask for the first time 5 years ago when I was 30yrsold on my 3ds and I loved it, even more than Ocarina of time. Most of u guys who played it probably played it when u were kids. I see that can make a huge difference in personal opinion on the quality of the game.
I have a love hate relationship with this game
I love the slightly updated look compared to ocarina, I love the feeling of dread, I love the masks
But the timer always ticking, I like exploring In Zelda games and this Is kind of off putting to me, I keep saying I will give the game a try

So am I right in thinking the main difference between the n64 and 3ds would be: 3ds looks better and has a lot of quality of life improvements, but n64 is is more fun to control and play?

It depends on what controls you’re talking about. The gyro controls make aiming more fun in the 3DS for instance. Goron combat is also much better in the 3DS version.
Zora controls are controversial though you have the option to use the original swimming but it uses magic. With chateau romani you can nullify that problem altogether though.
Deku link is probably the form that is definitely less fun in the remake.
Overall, the remake fixes some of the originals problems but has some problems of its own. I think it’s a better way to play the game overall, but there’s definitely things you’ll miss out on regardless of what version you play.
This is the best game of all time. If you haven't played it yet, give it a chance when it comes to NSO! As I've played more and more over the years, the timer becomes less of a stressor and more of a scheduling tool.
Would've played this game if it wasn't for the 3 day cycle, I don't mind time limits in games, but this one wasn't my cup of tea when watching playthroughs
It's really not that bad, especially if you focus on one thing per cycle. As soon as you start, play inverted song of time and then go do one thing. When you are done, reset the cycle and repeat. Does this take longer in overall gameplay? Yes. Is it much more manageable and less stressful? Very yes. The only exception to that is there are quests that overlap that all have to be done in a single cycle, like saving the ranch and then protecting the milk wagon. but you can still focus on just those few at a time.
Just reset the timer before you begin a dungeon and you’ll never have an issue
Personally hard to go back to the 64 games that got the 3DS remakes. MM's bomber journal was such a nice feature and the graphics are so much cleaner

Majora's Mask evolves into Majora's Incarnation and Majora's Incarnation evolves into Majora's Wrath.
Now, people can play this version of Majora's Mask as opposed to the terrible 3ds remake, but unfortunately, it's tied to a terrible online service that doesn't even run the game properly.
Not to mention, it's behind a stupid $50 a year paywall.
I haven't had a single problem with MM on Switch VC, looks and plays just like normal

@@NoLongerNeedThis I would like to give an update; Nintendo fixed most of their emulation issues on Switch. Stuff like the fog is actually working now on both MM and OOT.

I feel like Majora is just one of those games that'll never get old. I mean, its still iconic to me and I haven't even played it yet (I was brought up on PlayStation).
