What camera do you use, and if you could would you get the *Canon EOS R5* , or the soon to be announced *Sony A7sIII* _(coming July 28th)_ ? Also, *why?* 🤘
Great video. I’ve heard that more megapixels for video isn’t always better but never understood why. Thanks for explaining. We have been using a canon 80d with sigma 18-35 for the last 3 years along with iPhones for our videos. The only other lenses we have are kit so I don’t really count those and hardly use them. Been thinking about using the 80d specifically for studio setup and purchasing another camera for anything outside of studio in the next 6 months to a year. Will use 90% for video, occasional pictures. Torn between the R6 and a7s3. What are your thoughts on the r6 vs a7s3? I’m not really worried about switching brands, I love tech and the process of figuring new stuff out.
Thank you! I think you are in a unique position where I wouldn't call it switching brands, as much as I would say you are finding your brand. We started out with canon, and did not have enough invested into it to mind the switch. (mom just got a great camera for mother's day 😂). In my opinion, Sony is better for video between the two. What you might consider doing, is buy an A7iii for about $1200 and either sell it to upgrade or keep it as a great B cam. (just a thought). Canon and Sony are both great for video, but if you had to start from scratch, I give _Sony_ the edge. I don't expect the A7sIII to take great photos. That's where your canon, or a older A7III *might* be better as a backup.

It is a great sensor for sure. It has around 46MP, and is back illuminated which essentially moves the "wires and memory" to the backside of the sensor allowing more light to flow through. Sony does the same thing with their sensors as well. As far as it's capability in the field, I do not own one, and cannot say for sure.
The Creator's Cup I own the D850 and I get amazing results with it. I was more curious to know the difference of the R5 CMOS vs the D850 BSI-CMOS they both have 45mp full frame sensors but I guess they produce different results?
The s1h from Panasonic has amazing low light capabilities and it's only 24 mega pixels. I'd like to see how well the A7sIII compares. Does 12 mega pixels make that big of difference in low light?
I personally do not have any experience with the sih, but have heard it does really well. Our a7iii has 24.2mp and does fantastic in low light. IMO, I would stick with what you have if you already like it. I think the 12mp will be slightly better (just for video), and the camera as a whole will too, but not necessarily worth the switch anytime soon.

@@germancreatives88 I think you're right. I watched a video where the colors degraded on the Sony a7iii in low light, but the Panasonic s1h kept good color accuracy in low light. This might have something to do with the dual native iso that the s1h has. Unfortunately it looks like the Fx9 has dual native iso and the a7siii will not. I guess Sony wants to make sure the a7siii does not compete with the low light capabilities of their high end models like the Fx9.
Downscaling 45MP to 12MP you get almost the same noise but with more detail ... choices. I dont' understand why all influencers compare this two cameras, A7SIII is competitor of Canon R6 (that have 20MP) not R5. For this experiment you could compare Sony A7SIII and Sony A7RIV (61MP). And maybe use some sample photo with same brand sensor... i spent lot of time doing these kind of comparisons...
*downscaling in the right way i meen. In any case with more MP you have more chance in post-processing (we're talking about PRO cameras, not for holidays)
Just starting to get interested in videography / content creation & this video helped a lot , seriously thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed video that even a caveman like me was able to comprehend!

I have 3 sony a6600's. I feel I need an A camera to do better slow motion video. But I have apsc lenses. But I could use those lens until I got full frame lens. So I am not sure about getting the A7S III until the price comes down. (10 yearz from now)
The BMPCC 4k is still a beast and lenses are pretty cheap. That's our camera of choice for cinelifter drones. If you have a higher budget, the Sony FX3 is amazing 🤘
@@milanjani that's fair, although unusable is maybe a bit extreme. It's hard to judge someone's definition of "cheapest" lol. In this case, the only cine cam (worth buying) with serious low light capability under $5k would be the fx3.

This is a very nice and honest video. There are just a few videos saying that you (we) don’t need to upgrade every year. It's a marketing move of course, but I still stick to my camera from 2017 and she's still giving me great results. I have a Canon 5D Mark IV but I'm having issues with the noise at night. We create videos for my Org and is mostly at night. Any recommendations? I'm open to try other brands and cameras just for video. Thanks for the video, now I understand better how all this works.
Great video ! Thanks bro
Definitely nice video overall. You briefly described an advantage of shooting in 8k and cropping in for 5 seconds out of the entire video. Wish this was emphasized more because I definitely will benefit from the cropping in and more detail. Also, I hear oversampling and downscaling to 4k from 8k may reduce low light noise. I get that the EOS r5 can't shoot 8K for very long, which may be fixed with fans and software upgrades, but emphasizing the power of 8k for maybe 20 seconds would have been nice. I'm not giving a thumbs down because this video deserves some praise and respect
In your pixel demos I believe you have used the wrong terminology. Your 2x2 grid as a whole is one pixel, not four. Each quadrant of the bayer arrangement is a photosite.
From my understanding it is a pixel per Bayer filter on a BSI chip. Unlike a quad Bayer filter setup which would be more like what you are speaking of. (Like the mavic air 2). The chip must read them individually as pixels. One commenter mentioned that this would result in about a 30% drop in true pixels vs 4k making 12mp slightly under 4k. I may be very wrong, but it is interesting either way. Thanks for the info🤘
A very good comparison/example extolling the virtues of video vs photography. New tech wont exactly make you better. It works for people that know exactly what they want. Their specific purpose.
Thank you!🙏 I agree, unless there is a specific need, most of us need to focus more on improving the quality of our craft, than worrying about the latest greatest thing. I feel like camera companies should consider this as well. Refinement can be just as good as advancement (too a point).
The problem is that unfortunately most people buy based on hype and brand loyalty and companies capitalize on that. I have see too many comments making fun at Sony for the lower megapixel count. People just have to find a way to justify their choices when they really don't have to. Then they end up spreading ignorance. Thanks for this amazing video and all the efforts that was put into it.
Thank you! I agree, and Sony users need to not hate on Canon😂. They both make incredible cameras and most importantly, the competition forces them to keep innovating and refining. 🤘
In displays they call them sub pixels, and they tend to be rectangular in shape within the "main" pixel. For camera sensors it is generally just pixels that have a pattern where some are red, some are green, and some are blue. (RGB). Also known as a Bayer filter. Google Bayer filter if you are curious.. This brings up a point that another commenter mentioned, 12mp isn't necessarily capable of a "true" 4k as about 30% are lost through "bayering". This is something I will be driving deeper into later on...
@@CK3DPRINTS Thanks for the informative reply so the a7siii isn't 'truly' 4k? If so that would dissuade me from a purchase. I'm a hybrid shooter and I'm almost able to get over 12MP for stills as I don't shoot birds much and I don't crop 99% of the time. But if 12mp isnt even enough for 4k video then I'll wait for an a7iv
it would depend on the type of photography. If it is for Instagram, or even webpage work, the A7sIII is a fantastic, and very powerful, photography camera. If it is for print, the max "page" size would be 9"x14". If you need more than this on a regular basis, or crop in often, I would look elsewhere for a camera. Just my opinion..
it comes down to what you need, a hybrid or a video only camera. Im still thinking about this. Do I go R5 for just having one camera that does it all, or keep my D850 and pick up a separate A7siii for video. hmmmmm
That's true. The *Sony A7SIII* is a *video specific camera* . If you get into video full time, you will want more than one camera, and ideally you will want them to be the same brand in the beginning. Less cash on lenses, etc.. One camera can be a killer video camera and the other can be more photography specific, but also a good _B_ video camera. You also will want to consider keeping one brand to allow for easier color correction/matching. ( _which we clearly dropped the ball on in this video_ 😂). Both Canon, and Sony are fantastic camera companies, that will keep releasing amazing cameras. The Nikon is also a great camera... _In my opinion_ , if you are more into photography, and *need* to leave Nikon, go with Canon. If you are more excited about video, go with Sony.
@@CK3DPRINTS I am an exact 50/50 split I need both. I was shooting on a BMPCC4K but just sold it so I can afford either the R5 or A7siii. It was too much kit to carry around. I will see what the price and specs of the new Sony is and have a hard think lol. Exciting times.
What are your needs /wants? If you like the d850 image I think you could pair it with an Atomos recorder or similar to get continuous 4:2:2 8-bit in really edit friendly files. But no 10-bit unfortunately. The R5 won’t do uninterrupted video (max 30min, if not interrupted by heat earlier), so it won’t be ideal for many video projects.
@@randomgeocacher not an option, I need 10bit or RAW as I do professional tourist videos of location. I was using the BMPCCK4K but am looking to the R5 (record limits are ok in my use case) or the A7siii. I need to decrease the gear I carry. I have to climb mountains with it lol.
Very true. The reason we didn't discuss the quad Bayer sensor (effectively a 48mp with a little processing improvement in low light), is because we are fairly certain it will be a 12mp BSI CMOS sensor. We will know for sure in 3 days!
That was a great explanation and some wise words of advice. I'm new to the camera scene but have a lot of experience with guitarists and other musos, and there are gear guys and music guys. The gear guys are always looking for the higher specs, but really you can make music on a cheap instrument - especially if you practice. Maybe its the same with photography? Thanks again for the clip 👍🇦🇺
Thanks 🤘 Haha, it is very much the same in photography. A lot of us get so hung up on gear that we forget to just go create and capture. These things are just tools, we still have a job to do 😅
It is a dji crystal sky 7" high brightness monitor with a dji hood and random $40 Amazon mount. At $700, I honestly can't recommend the monitor unless you have a very specific need for it, like livestreaming from the drone to a multicam system. (Hdmi out). The monitor is much brighter, but, and this is huge, the software/hardware is very buggy. It can get choppy while flying and can even be risky when buzzing trees, etc.
I'm guessing to save costs on manufacturing new sensors. Most ASP-C cameras are at least photo hybrids and have the need for more pixels. It's a great question though!
Thank you for making this video demonstration. It will make it easier for me to communicate to my video clients why 987654321 megapixels are detrimental in a camera just used for 4 k video.
I have 5 year old Canon 70d still working good and a Sony a7iii as it was the best camera in my budget. I know you said stick to your brand but I am happy with switching to Sony. 😊
Wow blown away. Very understandable. Very informative and easy to follow. Thanks a lot. Been following Froknowsfoto and others alike but never understood this until now 🥳🥰⚡
Yes this is why A7s3 is a video centric camera whereas the R5 is a hybrid. If you’re a photographer and shoot video once in awhile R5 is the way to go. 12mp for stills is useless. If you shoot mostly video the S is better option and maybe an a73 for stills.
not all are correct, if your photos is for social media, it would be perfect because social platforms are compressed to 12mp. The good thing of this sensor aside from BSI it also can capture to the very dark invironment and it has really good dynamic range.
Ian Rosas if you only upload photos for social media then 12mp is enough. However if you’re working photographer and you print photos 12mp is not enough. Cmon man that’s just common sense

there are videos showing how to easily fix the sony skin tones as well (I can link one if you want)
Fantastic explanation! Who needs school when you have TH-cam. 😜
Sony A7RIV or A7III for stills and Fujifilm X-T4 for video !
That is a great combo!
I don't know why this channel has
We will get there. Too much time preparing and not enough time filming, until now.😂. I'll have to say I am jealous of the A7Riv, but i completely understand- The A7iii is a tried and true beast🤘. We have so much stuff that we haven't really used properly.. Glad it helped!
Awesome video. Really enjoyed the science breakdown of megapixels.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I'm a diehard Sony and Olympus shooter, and I'm not switching. Each one has a purpose. BTW I just found this video, and I love it. Liked and subscribed.
They are all just tools, and some are better for certain jobs.. We still keep a canon around, but have found we use Sony for most of our video. Thank you very much! 🤘
great video, definitely an eye opener for me.
Thanks! I think too many people worry about the number of pixels/resolution more than some other very important details.
Really nice video ... even that i already know the science it was great watchting it. Everybody complaing about resolutions should watch it. Thumbs up!
Thank you! Resolution isn't everything
hi You make a great point about not just changing just for the sake of it. and I am a Canon user EOS-R so Ive started changing my lenses to RF which are very nice just cost a lot . so thank you. im going to save up get the lenses that I wanted and see at the time as the only restriction the R has is Shots Per Sec and IBIS over the R5 and R6 . just for photos not filming yet, not even looked into it.
Very wise choice. *Glass first* , new camera later... *Much* later🤘
Awesome demonstration! Loved it 🙏🏻🔥
I have 3 sony a6600's. I feel I need an A camera to do better slow motion video. But I have apsc lenses. But I could use those lens until I got full frame lens. So I am not sure about getting the A7S III until the price comes down. (10 yearz from now)
Currently, according to you whats the best cheapest cinema camera having more than 13 stops dynamic range?
The BMPCC 4k is still a beast and lenses are pretty cheap. That's our camera of choice for cinelifter drones. If you have a higher budget, the Sony FX3 is amazing 🤘
@@CK3DPRINTS BM 4k is unusable in low light.
@@milanjani that's fair, although unusable is maybe a bit extreme. It's hard to judge someone's definition of "cheapest" lol. In this case, the only cine cam (worth buying) with serious low light capability under $5k would be the fx3.
@@CK3DPRINTS actually look of BM 4k is awesome. But the moment sun sets and you have to do eve and night shoots, all you see is grains. So, unless you have speedboosters etc. it's not usable in my viewpoint.
Does binned mode actually help eliminate the noise and have a higher light reading?
Very good video!! Enjoyed! Due to my investment in the E mount system, and the fact I shoot a lot in low light, naturally lit low light right before sunrise to right after sunrise, I am looking forward to the A7Siii!
Thank you! It really is an investment, and one you never want to have to change. I love a good twilight shoot! We are looking forward to it as well!
What you said at the end is really on point. We get hooked on getting the new camera every time, spending 3,4,5 k or more and then have 50$ light and use in-camera sound,..... Great video, thank you!
Thank you, I couldn't agree more... Now just to upgrade that terrible light🤔😂
I love they way this guy talks, he really speaks about what is real and says the truth
Thank you🙏 We do our best
Love the value you put in your work! Subscribed...way to go
Much appreciated!🤘
lol i appreciated the therapy sesh at the end. was thinking of buying the sony fx3 but now I'll just stick with the 1080p that my fuji gfx 50sii does.
@@_brayanenriquez haha, you know, it's been a few years since this video so I had to rewatch the end to catch what you meant. I needed to hear that again as well 😆😅. Thanks for the comment, and I think we both just saved each other from wasting some serious cash 💰💰😬
Cheers, and great camera 🤘🏻
This is a very nice and honest video. There are just a few videos saying that you (we) don’t need to upgrade every year. It's a marketing move of course, but I still stick to my camera from 2017 and she's still giving me great results. I have a Canon 5D Mark IV but I'm having issues with the noise at night. We create videos for my Org and is mostly at night. Any recommendations? I'm open to try other brands and cameras just for video. Thanks for the video, now I understand better how all this works.
Subscribed! So informative and awesome presentation. I like the message at the end of the video. Keep it coming 👍
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. Sometimes I think I talk too much haha😂
Cannot wait for Sony A7SIII = Superior to release that low light beast
These are exciting times!🤘
Awesome video thank you.
Thank you🤘
great video. loved it
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
Great video ! Actually i wanted to buy a light professional camera for my run and gun traveling shoot ,.. so i got confused between the canon r5 and a7s3 ,.. i was thinking about the r5 seriously but watching your video made me think again ,.. i need to see the real reviews and i need to understand what will make me feel happy more while using it ! Thanks bro
Of course, make sure you do your research! This is just one part of the puzzle. Thank you!🙏
Wow, this is wild. Thanks for this guys, super helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!👍
great explanation man! appreciate it
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!😎
Definitely nice video overall.
Wow that is some legit breakdown of MP vs video resolution. Respect!!👏👏👏👏👏
Much appreciated! 🤘🤘🤘
You put amazing content out there, can't wait to watch this video
Thank you! 🙏🏼 Hopefully this is also up to your standards 🤘
I thought a pixel on a monitor is all three red blue and green lights, which are sub pixels,
Why are the four sub pixels you showed individual pixels?
In displays they call them sub pixels, and they tend to be rectangular in shape within the "main" pixel. For camera sensors it is generally just pixels that have a pattern where some are red, some are green, and some are blue. (RGB). Also known as a Bayer filter. Google Bayer filter if you are curious..
This brings up a point that another commenter mentioned, 12mp isn't necessarily capable of a "true" 4k as about 30% are lost through "bayering". This is something I will be driving deeper into later on...
@@CK3DPRINTS Thanks for the informative reply
so the a7siii isn't 'truly' 4k? If so that would dissuade me from a purchase. I'm a hybrid shooter and I'm almost able to get over 12MP for stills as I don't shoot birds much and I don't crop 99% of the time. But if 12mp isnt even enough for 4k video then I'll wait for an a7iv
Great explanation on this subject! Thank you!
Thank you!🤘
first time i saw u channal, very professional. hope u can make more awesome video on youtube
Thank you! Making a new video right now🤘
What if photography is equally important as videography and we have one camera only wich is A7s iii.
it would depend on the type of photography. If it is for Instagram, or even webpage work, the A7sIII is a fantastic, and very powerful, photography camera. If it is for print, the max "page" size would be 9"x14". If you need more than this on a regular basis, or crop in often, I would look elsewhere for a camera. Just my opinion..
@@CK3DPRINTS thanks dear, this helped a lot. Keep shining.

nice work man , namaste 🙏✨
Keep it uo guys good work💥

Great video, really opens up perspective.
Thank you!
it comes down to what you need, a hybrid or a video only camera.
Sooooo mannnyy opptions!!😂 Best of luck👍
I have to climb mountains with it lol.
not all 12MP sensor is equal, if sony A7S iii gets BSI cmos sensor it would be a killer in low light!
Very true. The reason we didn't discuss the quad Bayer sensor (effectively a 48mp with a little processing improvement in low light), is because we are fairly certain it will be a 12mp BSI CMOS sensor. We will know for sure in 3 days!
Si señor, una explicación muy didáctica. Ejemplo de lo que deberían ser todos los TH-camrs de primera
Muchísimas gracias 🙏
That was a great explanation and some wise words of advice. I'm new to the camera scene but have a lot of experience with guitarists and other musos, and there are gear guys and music guys. The gear guys are always looking for the higher specs, but really you can make music on a cheap instrument - especially if you practice. Maybe its the same with photography? Thanks again for the clip 👍🇦🇺
Thanks 🤘
Haha, it is very much the same in photography. A lot of us get so hung up on gear that we forget to just go create and capture. These things are just tools, we still have a job to do 😅
Thank You for the thoughtful video, love the no hype approach, just the facts...(Sony A7Sii, A7Riii, A7iii)
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback🤘
Outstanding Video!!!!!!
Thank you! 🤘
What mount and display are you using for your drone?
It is a dji crystal sky 7" high brightness monitor with a dji hood and random $40 Amazon mount. At $700, I honestly can't recommend the monitor unless you have a very specific need for it, like livestreaming from the drone to a multicam system. (Hdmi out). The monitor is much brighter, but, and this is huge, the software/hardware is very buggy. It can get choppy while flying and can even be risky when buzzing trees, etc.
Why don't the APS-C cameras have 12 megapixels? It would be perfect for the Sony ZV-E10 (M2) with 11mm 1.8 or 15mm 1.4 🥹
I'm guessing to save costs on manufacturing new sensors. Most ASP-C cameras are at least photo hybrids and have the need for more pixels. It's a great question though!
Great tips! Thank you very much!
Glad it helped, and thank you!🙏

Yes this is why A7s3 is a video centric camera whereas the R5 is a hybrid. If you’re a photographer and shoot video once in awhile R5 is the way to go. 12mp for stills is useless. If you shoot mostly video the S is better option and maybe an a73 for stills.
I completely agree. 👌
Exactly
not all are correct, if your photos is for social media, it would be perfect because social platforms are compressed to 12mp.
@@thecringe_tv Printing photos is really rare at this time. Cmon I think you have to re-read my comments. you missed my point.

Great video but I'm half way through and you're still talking about the amount of pixels in a sensor. Maybe for the drone shot s simple white square for a pixel would work better. Just my cc. Good look with the channel!
