Be fair to Amtrak it was set up to fail+has to run on lines that be federally owned but we're stupidly privatized....

@@spencerhopkinson9874 I would like to respectfully disagree with your opinion. I believe that Amtrak is not in a good position to be a private railroad. It's constantly running in the red (even though they were so close to breaking even before COVID hit), and suffering from old equipment and doesn't have a great reputation with the public due to constantly delayed trains. If Amtrak were to be a private railroad, like you believe, then I believe this would have to happen:
1. Amtrak expanded into major population centers to connect with other existing trains, AND made trains go faster than 79MPH (Say 90 or 110MPH for those outside the NEC, and maybe introducing more high speed services), that would attract riders, the faster the train, the more riders you get
2. Amtrak and the freight railroads made some sort of arrangement that would stop the constant freight blockage that Amtrak trains (outside the NEC) suffer from. I mean, if Brightline and the FEC can do it, I believe Amtrak and the class 1s can too. Less delays means more ridership in my opinion.
3. Amtrak purchased new equipment that would minimize delays and provide more comfort and safety.
I believe there would have to be more than just those three points to make Amtrak financially independent, but those are a start. One reason I believe Amtrak should be a federal corporation and not a private corporation is because my biggest concern if that were to ever happen is, "if Amtrak were private, would it be on the stock market?" I'm worried that if Amtrak were on the stock market, the management would focus solely on lucrative lines rather than lines that serve areas where people have practically no other way to get in or out of their town (The Empire Builder is a big example of this as there are towns along the one without interstates for over 100 miles or so, not to mention, few or no regional airports at all.) not to mention downgrade the service on it's trains to maximize profit all just to give returns to a bunch of company ruiners on Wall Street. Many freight railroads are more concerned over shareholders, which (from what I am told and believe) is a major reason (not so)Precision (not so) Scheduled (not so railroaded) Railroading exists. Another reason I disagree with you is that in Britain, they privatized British Rail and while freight haulage got better, passenger haulage and quality didn't. As a result, many companies over promised and under-delivered resulting in some cases where the UK government had to resort to an "Operator of last resort" and were nationalized. The UK government is creating Great British Railways, but that's a body and not a company/corporation. And the USA is just so big and so not dense that population centers are scattered rather than in one confined area. Yes, I know, Japan has mostly private railways that came about after JNR was privatized, which are incredibly successful, but that's because the country is so small and has a high density, so operating trains there is incredibly successful and lucrative (and why someone from Kyoto could take the train to Tokyo in the morning and come back in time for dinner). So, I disagree with you believing that there shouldn't be a (federal) government system, but I'm not going to get angry with you over it, and I respect your opinion.

@@spencerhopkinson9874 Well, making a company a private company doesn't automatically make it profitable, plus wasn't Conrail a U.S. government owned company that was profitable before the government handed Conrail to the private sector? Also YES, I am going to argue for (what you call) "horse & buggy services" because they are indeed better than nothing. Amtrak serves a lot of areas in America where there are no other means of transportation like roads or airports. Heck, on the Empire Builder line, there are no interstates in over 100 miles on several parts of the line. Not only that, but trains create many more millions if not Billions of dollars in economic activity. On several of the Amtrak connects us lines that Amtrak is proposing, several lines like the planned front range passenger rail line on a secondary BNSF corridor between Fort Collins and Pueblo, there could be 2.3 billion dollars in economic activity solely on one time investments, and in Indiana, a proposal for 2 lines from Chicago to Louisville and Cincinnati can generate 8.2 billion in economic activity solely from one time investments (and look at the economic activity from one time investments in the proposals for service from Tucson to Phoenix and Vegas to LA). Also, even if some trains aren't directly profitable, they still create even more in economic activity. (look at the economic activity that could come about if the North Coast Hiawatha was restored, the operating cost is slightly higher than the train revenue, but even higher in economic activity) This economic activity creates tax revenue for funding infrastructure, services and if that doesn't satisfy you, the tax funding from economic activity provided from Amtrak services into these small or big towns also goes into the military and the police. Also, you can't just train hop on a freight train from a small town to the city or another small town. Even if you're not caught, train hopping is a felony that can get you arrested, not only that but it's dangerous as hell. So yes indeed, I do believe train service is better than nothing, and that if we improve and expand the train service, there can be even more economic activity, and therefore, more tax revenue to fund infrastructure and the police.
This probably has to be the most catchiest jingle I have ever heard. Period

UP is pretty rad when it comes to railroad heritage. They're decked out with the RR heritage units, they've got special painted GEVO's, and a steam program that houses the mighty big boy!
What are the numbers of the GEVOs?

Amtrak Mikey 2010, 7400, 7964, and, formerly, 7605. 7605, however, was unfortunately painted from its GE scheme to the regular UP scheme since 2007 or so.

I played 3 years with the Union Pacific River City Railmen and whenever we made a public appearance, Pres. John C. Kenefick wanted that song played. He would actually come down to the old freight house where we rehearsed, just to hear us play it. I can probably still play the baseline of that song in my sleep!!!!

Makes 26 hours delay ( unless you count a situation in which a train got stuck in a snow and was delayed by two or three weeks if I'm not mistaken).
Poor Amtrak, when they actually have the right of way and the own the tracks/stations they do pretty well.
I live in Nebraska so this song makes me very proud of this beautiful state.

Rojo Railfan the operating manual says the fastest they are allowed to go is 75 mph, and that’s only if the train is in an area where they can go at top speed, and the train is a double stacked intermodal.

Wow! Thanks so much for putting this on! On a visit to Expo 74 (Spokane's World's Fair in 1974) a guitar-playing friend we were with wanted to learn the words to this and a group of us sat through the film at the Union Pacific exhibit like six or seven times while he wrote down the words. A nice memory!

I honestly admire the railroad system in the US. It's like there's so much innovation and technology and the staff are so passionate. It kinda makes me wanna go work for the American railroads 😄
Harcharan Singh it’s a pretty amazing railroad system, the locomotives are so big! The pictures do not do them justice when it comes to size you easily forget how big they are until you are right next to them!

Loved this ad when new, during the 1970s. I had several railroader relatives, they seemed to all enjoy their work. MOPAC was a famous freight train company here, but Union Pacific would also pass through this town. This video looks HD...really cool.

bit of trivia, this song was penned in 1970 by Bill Fries and Chip Davis... Bill also wrote the old Home Bread jingle. Both are better known as C.W. McCall (Convoy) and Mannheim Steamroller!

Where I live is on the former Illinois Central (now Canadian National) mainline between Chicago and New Orleans but the Union Pacific does use the CN the tracks. I've actually seen a few UP trains go through the area

Even as a kid, before I knew about rail fanning, sometimes UP's engines would end up here in Canada zipping by my home town.
