Great track JP. Kudos to those who recommended it. It’s a very unique sound even for the early 80s. This was used in the BBC series “Ashes to Ashes” which I can recommend. All the best Dave✅✅
Yes! I was going to say, this reminds me of the first episode of Ashes to Ashes when Alex walks into the restaurant. Such a great series, as was Life on Mars.
@@lubilou64 I fully agree Louise. It was an absolute masterpiece. Some of the music from Life on Mars in particular was insane. I might dig some out and do some reactions to them. All the best Louise. Dave✅✅
Love this band ! Glad you review more and more UK early 80's bands lately ;) It's the first track of the album, great opener with a very lush sound and more on the pop side. Their first album is more post-punk.
Really atmospheric track. Love the effect on the guitar. Fun fact: Written by the band's singer Barbara Gogan about Steve 'Roadent' Connelly, a one-time roadie for the Clash and Sex Pistols, who had minor roles in several German films.
Hi JP! Thanks for reacting to this song! Frankly, I can't remember when I suggested it, so I thought it was gone in the wind ("Oh, man o' little faith!" ^^"). I discovered this song in a New Wave compilation album, along with tunes I already knew ("Fade to gray" from Visage, or "Doot Doot" from Freur) and others I didn't. Right after listening to it, finding the album "30.000 feet over China" became a priority , though it was hard to find in this pre-internet era :D ! As for the rest of the album, songs oscillate between this dreamy/atmospheric mood ("Alice's song", "Someone special", "Small stones"), and a bit more uptempo feel ("Bachelor girls", "The swimmer", "Skin deep"), but the effects on guitar and voice keep "colouring" the songs in a kind of surreal mist, much like watching the ever-changing landscape in a train through a steamed window... Thanks again anyway and keep up the good work! PS : Does this mean there's still hope for "1.Outside" (You didn't see that coming, did you :D) ?
Oh man, Freur's 'Doot Doot'! 😍 Always great to meet someone else who remembers that great song! 😁 Justin should totally react to that one at some stage, too! 😄👍

Hey, one that I remember; sort of difficult to forget that title if one is into cinema. "Dreaminess" was a good description. Never made my playlist - or whatever we had back then - but did get re-listens just for the nicely produced atmosphere it created.
Number 2 in my all time Top 10! I was 11 when this came out in 1981, here in The U.K. It had an interesting Chart run: 49, 34, 26, 28, 25, 30, 34, 68. Unusually for records of the time, it fell after appearing on BBC's Top of The Pops. The Album Thirty Thousand Feet Over China, contains some wonderfully atmospheric tracks also.

For another couple of interesting sounds from around the same time perhaps try "Back on the London Stage" or " Wild west" by "Pink Military" . From their album "Do animals believe in God" released in 1980. A couple of the band members were involved in a number of other more successful bands like Simply Red and earlier, Big in Japan with Holly Johnson "Of Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Bill Drummond (KLF) and Budgie (Souxsie and the Banshees). Definitely a band that I thought would have gone on to greater things, but despite having quite the cult following they broke up not long after this album was released.
Oh yes, the dreamy darkness of the early 80's (and one of my favourites) but my biggest favourite of that time is this track (which was also a one hit wonder, but they deserved so much more) th-cam.com/video/HfGHOkPERsY/w-d-xo.html.
@Themanyfacesofego she was friendly, and I asked for her autograph! but she didn't want to do it sadly 😔 😪, she did ask me to watch Song to the siren the cover by Elizabeth Fraser which was strange though!
It's a good track but as far as I'm concerned I've never been very enthusiastic about this album and its predecessor (Michael & Miranda). I've always found their third and final album, the underrated Sanctuary, to have better material overall.
I don't think I've heard this song since the 1980's. Certainly takes me back. As Justin mentioned, this was their only hit, and I don't know anything else by them. I can see the comparison with the Cocteau Twins.
The vocalist Barbara Gogan only messaged me about a month ago asking my opinion on This Mortal Coil's Song to the siren 🚨?! I wanted her autograph but sadly she said no. C
@@CAdams6398 I really couldn't say, it's just the first band that popped into my head as I was litening to the intro. Maybe it's as vague as the early 8/0's vibe.
If you get in the mood for a short instrumental with a punny name and some groove and even the odd contortion, here's *The Choral Sea* (not the Coral Sea, even though they're from New Zealand, so that's just a few thousand km North of them in the Pacific) by *Split Enz* (so you also get a pun with the band's name). Good one to put in your music player for things like runs, maybe. th-cam.com/video/FzuRUS6xz9s/w-d-xo.html

He was their Senior Road Manager for a while. Barb said she "platonically fancied him".
The band had polished their sound by this time. All their records are good. Especially like their Michael & Miranda album.
