We are in fact a fan of red wine 🍷This is such an extensive tour! I've never seen tasmanian devils before - had no idea what they looked like before this.

In principle I agree with your concerns about keeping wild animals in captivity - but you have to balance that with the fact that without programs like the Tassie devil one, some of our unique species might not survive. Glad you're enjoying our cooler weather in Melbourne, though it's set to be quite warm tomorrow.

For sure. Every situation like this has its nuances and pros/cons!

Healesville Sanctuary does exceptional conservation work. The animals on display are ones that mostly cannot be rewilded, but there are thousands which are. They have been this for decades before Steve Irwin was even heard of. They also have a close relationship with the local Indigenous people.
And they have a fantastic program for children with special needs to help with the animals. They are a very good local employer too.
A bit of education before commentary next time,
      please.

In the Yarra (pronounced Ya-ru -'a' as in 'cat') Mountain Ranges above Yarra Valley grow the second tallest trees in the world/first flowering tallest trees named Stringy Gum/Swamp Gum/ Mountain Ash. They provide part shade canopy to the lush tree ferns. It's a beautiful drive.

Welcome to my area of Australia. I love doing lunch at a local winery.
The “sanctuary” at Healesville is not just a zoo. With the loss of over 1M native and domestic animals in our last massive bushfire event it is really important to rehabilitate orphaned and injured animals as well as endangered species. Monies raised by memberships and visitors to the Melbourne zoos (there are four zoos in and around Melbourne) enables the great work done by professional and volunteer wildlife warriors for our fauna and animals endangered internationally. We have just had the epic birth of an endangered white rhino at the Werribee open plains zoo in the south west of Melbourne. So, don’t worry about them being in “captivity”, they are well cared for and allowing people to view them is not to make a “profit” on them, it is to generate funds to save wildlife and the breeding programs which encourage zoos worldwide to strengthen the survival rate of endangered species through breeding and exchanges between international zoos as well as giving out conservation grants internationally … 👀… I swear, I don’t work for Zoos Victoria, I am just an animal lover.

Healesville Sanctuary is part of Zoos Victoria. They run four Zoos and Sanctuaries in the state of Victoria.

When I was young, I mixed booze and wildlife. It didn't end well. Sigh.
